28. Tears Don't Fall

The police officer escorted me to a private room in the hospital, and offered me a seat in a soft, comfortable looking chair. I sat down, trying to stop the tears from falling by blotting my red eyes with a blood stained tissue I'd been carrying in my pocket when Alex had been killed. His blood was still on my face and clothes, and I worried I may stain the beautiful chair. The police officer handed me a cleaner tissue, but I didn't use it. There was something more comforting about the other one.

"Ma'am, may we ask, what is your full account of how Alex Gaskarth was murdered?"

"Well, firstly... I guess you should know Alex and I were romantically involved." I stated, and watched as the police officer jotted down the information is his small notepad. "Alex was a member of this gang; the Lost Boys. They didn't like me because I didn't offer them the things they wanted... I was a popular target for them." I paused, enabling the officer to get every I'd just said down.

"Go on," he said, finally.

"As I walked home from school, the-they cornered me. In an alley-way." I choked. "One had a gun. He said he was going to kill me. He aimed his gun at me, and when he pulled the trigger, Alex jumped in front of me and - and I couldn't stop it - he was bleeding so much - the boys ran a-and... he was j-just lying there! I- I couldn't believe what I saw." I was full-on sobbing now, and it was hard to catch my breath. Alex's aunt burst into the room, and wrapped her arms around me protectively.

"Can't you see this girl has been through enough for one day?" she hissed, "Her boyfriend has just died, for heavens sake! She doesn't need to have to recount the whole thing! Can't you see what she's going through? Do you have no brain?"

I cried harder into her soft, pink sweater. It was heavily masked by her perfume, but there was an undertone of Alex's scent there. It made me ache for him, long for him to be here... but he wasn't. He was gone. Dead and gone.

Alex... my soulmate, was gone. The realisation hit. The sobbing stopped. It wasn't going to bring him back. Alex Gaskarth was dead.
