26. Heart Ripped in Two

As I walked home that evening, I was cornered by a bunch of really big guys, all wearing snapbacks and a couple carrying guns. This scared me. They had me cornered in a small alleyway, and I had nowhere to run.

"Ah, so you must be Wendy?" One boy, who seemed to be the leader, said to me. I looked at him questioningly. "Oh, you don't know us? Tell me you know who we are..." he said.

"The lost boys." I whispered, shakily wiping his spit from my face. I closed my eyes, ready for the pain that they were going to inflict upon me.

"Oh, dear, dear Wendy, you don't think we're going to hurt you, do you?" the boy said, causing the others to laugh. I opened one eye, and found it looking directly into his.

"Wendy.... We're going to kill you."

I screamed as one took out his gun and aimed it at me. He pulled the trigger and a bullet was released, but what happened next was a blur. Someone... had dove in front of me... the boys ran away, a look of horror on their faces, leaving me with my heavily bleeding savior. Oh, god, no, it was Alex.

"Alex?!" I screamed, leaning over his body. "Alex!" I yelled, slapping his face. His eyes wouldn't open.

I sobbed into his chest. "Alex, wake up now!"

His eyelids fluttered open, carefully taking in the large wound in his chest, directly through his heart.

"Wendy..." he whispered, "R-run..."

"I can't leave you!" I cried pathetically, cradling his limp body in my arms. "I won't!"

"I'm - I'm as good as d-dead," he coughed, then looked at me with alarm in his eyes. "You have to g-go, before they come back!"

It was then I noticed that his scarlet blood was everywhere. It was all over my hands, my clothes, my face. It was pouring over his t-shirt, and his head was bleeding where it had hit the ground. So much blood - he was losing so much blood...

"You're not going to die!" my heart snapped in two. "I won't let you!"

I stared down at him to find he wasn't moving, wasn't breathing. No, it wasn't meant to end this quickly! We were supposed to go to college together, and fall in love even more than we already were. We were supposed to eventually decided to settle down, and get married in a beautiful church, him looking devilishly handsome in a black tuxedo and me looking beautiful in an ivory white dress with my raven black hair piled skilfully on top of my head. We were going to be the happiest couple alive. We'd have two children, and Alex was going to be the best father in the world to those kids.

I felt my eyes prickle with more tears as I raked my hands through his soft brown hair. He wasn't dead. He couldn't be - there was so much that we hadn't done yet, so much that we hadn't allowed ourselves to commit to. He was still young, and had his life ahead of him, only to be snatched away from him and scattered like a thousand scars in the night sky. Every memory I had of him played over in my head. When I'd first met him, when I'd made my decision; every kiss, every caress...

I felt a hand on my shoulder, which I immediately swatted away, arching myself over Alex's dead body, protecting him from imposing threat; which was why I was surprised to see Alex's aunt, as she got down on her knee's, looking from me to Alex in shock.
