2. Detention

I sit there in silence looking up at the clock as it slowly ticks away the 2 hours of nothingness, 120 minutes of boredom, 7,200 seconds of hell. Tick Tock Tick Tock. Only 15 minutes have passed. Suddenly there is a knock at the door and Mr Mann walks in. “How may I help you Mr Mann?” Mrs Redding said, fluttering her eyelashes at him. Everyone knew that she had a crush on him; every time he walked through the door she would check her hair and flutter her lashes.

“I’ve got a note for Charlie from her mum.” He says, looking confused at Mrs Redding.

“Charlie? We don’t have a Charlie in here today?” she exclaimed.

Everyone in the school knows that my nickname is Charlie. I hate it when people call me Charlotte. Only my parents call me Charlotte when I’ve done something wrong and Mrs Redding because she never calls people by their nickname.

“Umm. Oh, I mean Charlotte. Charlotte Fletcher.” He walks over and hands it to me. Everyone resumes their silence. I open the note.

Hi Charlie,

Im going to be working late today, so if you could go home and pack your stuff for a sleepover at Elli’s. Sam is going to Ben’s for the night so ill pick you two both up at around 11 in the morning. Have a nice time! Lots of Love from Mum xx

I nearly scream in excitement. I make a tiny squeal and put my hand to my mouth suddenly. Mrs Redding looks over at me suddenly, “Is there something wrong?” she lowers her glasses so they nearly drop off her nose. “Um, no. Sorry.” I go red in the face and bury myself back into the book I was reading.

The minutes tick by and eventually it’s time for me to leave. As I had the longest detention I was the only one left in the room. I sigh in relief as I look up to the clock and its twenty minutes to six. “Right. It is time to go now Charlotte. I hope you have considered your punishment for today and will not talk again in my class. I am disappointed with you as I know that you are a very intelligent and brainy girl who is capable of doing many things.  Now, I hope not to see you in detention for some time Miss Fletcher.” She stands up and walks to the door to open it for me. “Well, I hope you have a good half term holiday.” I could see she was expecting me to say something, but I didn’t know what to say. Would I say… … “Oh thanks Miss. You too! What are you doing in the holidays?” No. Way too kind to say she just put me through 2 hours of detention. … “Whatever. Like you care.” No. Too mean. She would totally give me another tedious detention.

“Um, thanks. You too.” I say, almost a whisper. I go red, not knowing what else to say and walk out.
