8. Chapter 8

Igneria VI The Omniscient, as he liked to be known, sat on his throne in the cavern and watched the servants he was given go about their work. It was nice, after all he had been through, to be restored to his lordship and to have servants. The high Atland was doomed from the start, so when the nightmare offered to cater for the needs of a spoilt young man, Igneria couldn’t see anything wrong with it. When it finally collapsed, Igneria jumped for the clear air, safe in the knowledge that He would rescue him and his unfortunate love. Unfortunate because he loved her, see, but refused to accept that she didn’t love him. So, he decided to save her as well, hoping that she would realise what he could do for her. She wasn’t too impressed. She simply sat in a corner, dejected beyond help, and wept for her silly little sweetheart. He gave her everything, and she wanted the little piece of nothing that wasn’t rich or influential enough to save himself.

See, unfortunately for Igneria, he was wrong about the last bit.

It is a well known fact that an Erichnae’s jumping distance is, like their body temperature and height, subject to huge swings in accordance to moods. So a depressed Erichnae would be deathly cold, about four feet high and able to leap from one side of a carriage to the other. A desperate Erichnae, on the other hand, was sufficiently pumped with adrenaline to make him hot enough to almost float, tower seven foot in the air and leap from one side of a large Atland to the other. Many Erichnae were in shock at the fact that they were playing backgammon upside-down on an island that was hurtling to the earth below. Others knew, and were earning money, which did not exist within the paradise they called their homeland, to start anew in other parts. Krenclire had made it clear from the start that he didn’t know, and had no family there to worry about. Igneria had made a deal with one of his nightmares to keep him safe. The division in Erichnae moral values, though slight, was definitive.
