8. Go Cyclones!

I woke up earlier than I had planned, so I wandered around the house. I was bored out of my mind.

Finally, I stood in front of my dad's giant movie cabinet and looked through all the movie titles.

I had a strange desire to watch a Disney movie, so I picked up The Lion King and put it into the DVD player.

I watched the previews as I popped myself some popcorn. I burnt the first bag like I always do, and put another bag into the microwave. I finished popping the popcorn, and sat down on the couch as the last previews started.

I heard  scratching sound, followed by a quick, "Mrrroww?"

"Chico..." I groaned, gettng up to let my cat inside. He was a LARGE orange cat with little white feet. We should have named him Garfield.

"Mew," he cried, rubbing against me. I settled down to watch the movie, and he curled up beside me.

About halfway into it, my cell rang. I answered it.

"Hello?" I said.

"Hey girl," Jenna's voice came through the phone," you almost ready? Rachel and I will be there in like thirty minutes."

I forgot I was supposed to get ready for the JV soccer game today. We're supposed to cheer on the guys. I even forgot that Rachel decided to come with us in the last moment.

"Alright," I said. "I'm getting ready now."

Just then, Simba roared from the tv and scared Chico. He bolted, and crashed into the table, knocking over my cup. Thankfully, it was empty.

"Are you watching Lion King?" Jenna laughed.

"Yup," I said

"Alright, see you soon," she said, hanging up.

I put down my phone, and made sure Chico was okay as he huddled under the cabinet.

I quickly put on a tiny amount of makeup, and put on the Cyclone Soccer t-shirt Jason had given me through Jenna.

She would be wearing the same shirt.

A car honked outside, as soon as I finished pulling back my hair into a long braid.

"You look cute," Jenna praised, checking her eyes in the mirror. I climbed into the backseat.

"Hey Elena," Rachel said from the passenger seat, giving a tight smile.

"Hi," I said, pulling my bag into my lap.

"And we're off..." Rachel said, as Jenna pulled out of the driveway.

We drove past the empty school parking lot, which looked almost abandoned without the student cars filling it up.

The stadium that the JV boys were playing at was huge. It had long lines of teenage fans trying to get tickets. They each bought a ticket, and then rushed inside the gates to hunt down a seat. The entire place was full of the Cyclone's colors: Red and white. It also had a few people wearing the away team's blue and white colors.

"This is really full for a JV game," I said, breathless.

"Our school takes sports seriously," Jenna explained. "Most of the jocks tell us, 'Nobody likes a loser right?' as if we were losers."

"It's pathetic," Rachel said, handing me a pass.

"This will get us onto the field where the Cyclones are warming up. We can find the bench after we say hi to Ben and Jay," said Jenna.

"Alright," I answered, pushing through the crowd. It was already closing back up after Rachel had cleared a path, so I had to fight to keep up with her.

"Passes?" said the enormous man standing beside the tall gate that led onto the field. I showed him my tag, and followed Rachel.

She obviously knew what she was doing, because the guy didn't even ask her for one.

"She comes here alot," said Jenna.

"I can tell. I wish I could," I whispered back.

Rachel had already walked onto the field, and said hello to the guys. She stood off to the side, talking to one of the players animatedly.

"He says we have to delay the game because the other teams haven't got enough players yet," she told us angrily.

"What? Are you kidding me?" Jenna said. "That's ridiculous."

"Hey guys," Jason said, jogging over to us. "You heard right?"

"Yep," I answered. "That's so annoying."

"Nice shirt!" Ben called to us from the sidelines.

"I feel so supported," Jason teased, hugging me. He turned and hugged Jenna, and then Rachel.

"You should. These shirts are ugly," Rachel said, nudging me and Jenna with her arm.

"Totally," I agreed, winning a smile from Rachel.

"Watch it girls," Ben said, finally coming over to say hey.

"Yeah guys, those shirts will be hard to get once I become famous," Jason said, laughing.

A man wearing yellow and black stripes walked out onto the field. He blew a whistle, and people hustled into position.

"Gotta go!" Ben said, hugging us too. "See you guys at halftime."

The boys hustled into position, and we walked over to the row of bleachers behind their player bench.

"This is so cool," I said to Jenna.

"I know right?" She said, excited.

"Go Cyclones!" A girl screamed from the stands behind us.

"Go Beavers!" cried another fan.

"They're so loud," I said, smiling.

"They always are. But we're louder!" Rachel said.

"Go Cyclones!" We yelled as loud as possible.

Our guys turned towards us and smiled.

The opposing team had the kick-off to start. The ref blew his whistle , and the players lurched into action. The team kicked it backwards to their defense, who booted it up back to offense. I watched them pass around until finally someone on our team gained possesion and ran for the goal. He was stopped by the defense, who kicked it out wide.

It was about a quarter of a way through the game, with bad shots on goal and a large amount of what seemed like aimless dribbling.

"This is supposed to be an easy game for them," Rachel stated, involved in the recent plays.

I didn't answer, but kept watching them pass around and try to get an open shot. Soon, the ball was passed quickly to the forwards, who booted it to player #24.

Ben (#24) took the ball and dribbled back towards the goal box, and into an open area. Jake, whom I hadn't seen earlier, called loudly for a pass. He was wide open, and runnng directly for the goal.

Ben kicked a solid ball in his direction, and Jake (#13) trapped it and turned towards the goal. By now, every fan was screaming in the stands.

He went to kick the ball, but was knocked to the ground by a large player on defense. He got up quickly, and the refs blew a sharp whistle to signal a penalty kick.

Jake signaled to start the kick, and the defense lined up in front of him to make a "wall''. He started running at the ball from the side, and hit the ball with a satisfying kick.

It flew almost in an arc around the defense, and it slipped between the goalie's hands.

We went wild, along with the Cyclone fans in the stands.

"Go Jake!" I cried, echoing Jenna. He turned and grinned at Ben, and they exchanged a few words we couldn't hear.

The assistant coach subbed him out, and he walked briskly towards the bench.

"Yeah, Jake!" John cried, slapping him on the back.

He grinned at us now. Suddenly, his gaze shifted from us, to behind where the row of benches we were on.

A tall boy was strutting to where we were sitting, and I could feel Jenna and Rachel turning to gawk.

"Hey... Elena.. It's-" Jenna started to say, as I cut her off.

"No," I said, "I don't want to know."

"Hey, it's Rachel, right?" I heard Cam's familiar voice say.

I saw her staring in awe as Cameron sat down behind us, and started to talk to the guy next to him.

"Hey, Elena," he said, leaning down so that he was speaking directly into my ear. "What's the score?"

I whipped around to face him. "It's 1-0 currently. I'd like to watch the game right now, so if you'd please shut up.. That would be great."

He looked startled at first, which was quickly replaced by a smug look. He turned to Rachel, making my blood boil. I could see her eyes widen with surprise, and her smile widen.

"So, Rachel. Do you mind if I squeezed in right here?" He pointed in between us. I shook my head wildly, which she ignored.

"Sure," she said, sliding closer to Jenna, who rolled her eyes.

Cam was now in between us, and I had no one on my right. Great.

I totally missed the play because of Cam, and the opposing team scored against us right as the buzzer went of signaling half-time.

"Crap," I cried.

"That's a bummer," Jenna said, leaning around Cameron.

She made a face, and I giggled quietly as she pretended to flick him.

"What?" he asked, looking between the two of us.

"Nothing," we said in unison.

"I need something to eat..." Jenna said. "Anyone up for concessions?"

"I can, if you guys need to eat," Cam said, nonchalantly.

Rachel perked up. "I could really use something to eat right now. I'll come."

"How about you Elena?" Jenna said, raising her eyebrows at Cam.

I shook my head. "I ate a lot of popcorn before... I'm full."

"Alright," Jenna said, hesitantly.

It was only until they had left before I realized what a bad idea this was.

-Cam's P.O.V-

"So," I started.

"On second thought, I kind of want to get some candy. Maybe I should go catch up with them."

"I'll go with you," I said, with a puppy dog face.

"Nevermind," she said.

"You're not getting away from me that easily," I said.

I really wanted to talk to her and see what she thought about last night. I didn't know if I had gone too far by kissing her. Not that I regretted it, though.

"Watch me," she spat. But I could tell she instantly regretting how mean it sounded.

"Hey Elena!" cried Jake, trotting over.

Go away, Jake, I wanted to scream. I'm trying to talk to her.

"Jake," she said, leaning over the first bench to hug him. "You did an amazing job with that goal! It was a perfect kick!"

"Thanks," he said, turning red.

I could probably kill him, I thought.

He turned, as if just noticing me. "Hey, Cam," he said slowly. "When did you get here?"

"That's what I was wondering," Elena muttered under her breath.

"I heard that," I said. "I got here a while ago. I heard that these girls were going to cheer for the JV team so I decided to come watch."

"That's cool," Jake said, looking from me to Elena. "Did you see my goal, Cam?"

I nodded. "I did, but I only saw the second you shot it in."

I looked up to see Jenna walking back towards us.

"Jenna," I said, announcing her presence.

"Where's Rach?" Elena asked.

"She stopped to talk to Ben for a bit. Half time's almost over."

Jake turned back towards the field, where the players were starting to gather. "I'm off," he said, hugging Elena again.

"Later," I said, hoping he'd catch the hint.

Elena looked at me, probably hearing the annoyance in my voice. Rachel walked over to us after Ben had trotted away.

"The game's going pretty well," I said, leaning closer to Elena.

She ignored me, and stood up so Jenna could scoot behind her.

"Harsh," I said, making Jenna and Rachel laugh.

The second half went by quickly, but we didn't get anymore goals. We ended the game, 1-0.

"Cam!" A guy cried, running up from behind.

"Leo," I said, slapping his back.

"Where you been man?" He said, ignoring the girls.

"Around," I said dodging his question. "This is Elena, Rachel, and Jenna."

"Halloo girls."

"Hi," Elena said, sticking out her hand.

He shook it hesitantly, but met her gaze.

"I'm Leo. I'm on the Varsity team with Cam," he said.

I really just wanted him to walk away. But of course, that's not how it works.

"Really?" Jenna was interested now. "That's cool."

"Yup," I said. The JV boys were finally finished, and they started leaving. Jason and Ben came over to where we were standing. For once, I was glad to see them.

"How's it going guys?" I grinned at Jason.

He looked wary. "Fine," he said anyways.

Ben nodded, refusing to look at Leo. "Hi Cam. When did you get here?" I shrugged.

"About during half time," Elena answered, shooting me a look.

"Rachel," said Ben, "do you still have that book I gave you?"

"Yeah," she said. "It's in my bag. Jenna?"

Without a word, Jenna tossed her the keys. Ben followed Rachel to the parking lot.

"So, are they like.... dating?" Leo asked. I was wondering that myself.

"Sort-of," said Jenna. "They have always kind-of liked each other."

He nodded, and turned to look at Elena. "What about you?"

My blood turned to ice, and I could feel myself starting to get angry.

He'd better back the heck down, I thought.

"No. I'm not that into dating," she answered, not meeting his gaze.

I coughed, and checked my watch. She rolled her eyes at me.

"I bet I could change that," said Leo, winking.

Doubt it, I thought. You won't be able to get that close while I'm still here.

She shook her head. "Sorry, but no."

"Ouch," he said. "I've got to run anyway. Later Cam."

I grunted, and he left.

"Well he's something," Elena  muttered.

"I'll say," Jenna added. "He seems like a loser."

"Most of them are," Elena said, starting to smile. She flashed me a beautiful grin, and I couldn't help but smile back.

"I'm not a loser, though, right Elena?" I said, putting my arm over her shoulder.

She tried to shake it off, but I held onto her. "Oh totally not."

"I detect sarcasm," Jenna said.

"No duh," I said, with mock sadness. "You owe me for that one."

"No I don't," she said, her eyes getting big.

"Yes you do," I insisted.

"Do not."

"Do too."

"Just shut up before this continues." Jenna said. "Just ask her out already Cam."

Elena turned red, and stepped out from under my arm.

"How about... No." she said.

"She's just afraid of how awesome a date with me would be," I said, smirking.

"That is totally not it," she spluttered.

"Yes it is. You're worried you won't be able to keep up that ice queen act of yours."

"Ooh, I think I hear a date coming on... I better go catch up with Rachel and Ben to make sure they're not stealing my car," said Jenna.

After she left, I looked back at Elena. She looked nervous, and I laughed.

"Admit it."

"Never, because it's not true," she said.

"Yes it is." I informed her.

"Nah, but thanks anyways."

"You're not going anywhere," I said, grabbing her arm gently and pulling her back towards me.

"Nope. You have to agree to go somewhere with me tomorrow after school, or I'll stand here all night holding on to you."

I could feel her start to get hot, and I could tell she was blushing.

"Why am I suddenly your target?" she complained. "Why waste time with me, when you could screw some blonde chick?"

I spun her around to face me. "That's not why I want to talk to you."

"Then why? Why do you waste your time?"

"Because," I said, shrugging. "I like.. being around you. Is that so hard to-"

"Yes." Elena tried to pull out of my grasp, but I pulled her against my chest.

"I won't let go until you agree."

"Alright," she finally said. "Now let go."

I released her, and she shot across the grass away from me. I turned and chased her, dodging around people trying to keep her in my sight.

"You're fast!" I cried. She laughed, and kept running. "But not as fast as me."

I caught her easily, and lifted her up onto my shoulders.

God, she's so light, I thought, spinning around to walk calmly away.

"Cam!" she screamed. "Put me down!"

I obliged, and pressed her to my front again. "You agreed. No backsies."

"You sound like a kindergartner," she said.

"Whatever works," I replied, kissing the top of her head.

I cut her off, and spun her around. "Don't what? Do this?" I kissed her forehead, and then her nose. She looked so shocked I released her and fell back laughing. I had to sit to catch my breath, and she just stood gaping at me.

"Boys," she muttered.

"Girls," I said, grinning.

"You're coming with me afterschool, I said.

I stood up and starting walking to where I had parked. I didn't give her time to refuse, just hugged her goodbye, and started walking.

I had a strange feeling in my chest, that made me feel warm. I was happier than I'd ever been with anyone. She was so beautiful I could just watch her for hours.

"Bye, Elena." I called.

"Bye, Cam." She ran off to find Jenna and Rachel.
