The Gryffindor Princess

Elizabeth Duncan is a pure-blood witch that has been concealed from the Wizarding World for many years. She had been kept hidden and safe in the Muggle World, not knowing of her blood heritage or family. Elizabeth grew up in an orphanage due to the fact that each one of her family members were murdered for reasons unknown. Elizabeth had never in a hundred years would she have thought that her family had been one of the most powerful witches and wizards in Wizarding History.

12. The Truth

Throughout the day, the pendant that I had kept in my pocket had somehow remained warm despite the winter chill. It was almost as if it had its own beating heart. Without even realising it, I had made my way to the edge of the Forbidden Forest and I didn't hesitate entering it, knowing that it was known to be filled with dark and dangerous creatures.

The deeper I walked into the forest, the warmer the pendant got in my pocket. Deciding that I was isolated enough from everyone else, I pulled the pendant out and examined it further. The intricate details around the family crest seemed ancient and almost familiar.

The wolf at the centre of the pendant started to move and positioned itself into a howling stance, with its head pointing upwards to the sky. When it stopped, the pendant in my hand jerked violently in the opposite direction and pulled me further into the forest.
I was running as fast as I could to keep up with it because I knew that whatever this was, it was connected to my family but more importantly, Joanna.

Even though it was midday, the sun barely penetrated through the trees and to where I was standing. Before I could stop to catch my breath, the pendant latched itself around my neck and pulled me backwards and off my feet. I fell onto the soft snow and I was sucked back into another memory.

The atmosphere was almost suffocating, Duncans of all ages were casting jinxes and spells at the enemy but there were so many of them, and so little of the Duncans left. Amongst the havoc, two managed to escape but just barely.

The woman and the man from before were on their broomsticks and flying as fast as they could, desperately trying to get away from those set on killing them. They stopped at an abandoned house and quickly and quietly made their way into it. The man casted protective charms and spells around it to keep them safe for the time being while Joanna, the woman hobbled into the house.

She was far into her pregnancy at this stage and the stress and pressure from running away made her weak. The second she stepped into the house, her water had broken and pain shot up her body like a drug.

The woman yelled, and the man stopped casting the protective charms and ran inside.
"Caleb, the baby's coming early"

The man helped move her to a table in the kitchen and conjured up everything they had packed away. Spare clothes, food, water, towels and potions.

There was a time jump and Joanna was cradling a baby in her arms and humming. Caleb was setting up the small house and clearing the dust to make it slightly more sanitary for both Joanna and their newborn.
Knowing that they didn't have much time, Joanna slipped off the pendant around her neck and put it around her daughter's neck. Caleb joined them and held onto the both of them as tightly as he could.
Joanna whispered one last thing before the memory was cut off
"I promise to keep you safe, my Eliza."

Elizabeth had awoken still lying in the snow, but this time, it was snowing and she was crying. She sat up and sobbed, feeling nothing but emptiness and sorrow.
The Duncan girl let out a scream and all the tears that her body could muster, knowing no one could hear her. Nothing made sense to her at this point in time, why was she cursed to live a life with nothing but loneliness?

It was possibly already nightfall and the temperature had dropped even more, but Elizabeth had already been numb on the inside and felt nothing.
She forced herself to stand up and make her way back to her dorm, knowing that if she was out here for any longer, unnecessary action would be taken to locate her whereabouts.

A few weeks had passed and school started up again, the Great Hall was full of chatter and laughter as usual and Elizabeth was back to putting up a facade in front of her peers.

Draco and Elizabeth would occasionally cast sideward glances at each other during class and meal times but nothing more than that. It had been weeks since they last talked but the obvious attraction between the two was still there.
The only other person to realise this was Hermione but she said nothing.

During one of their classes together, Draco purposely chose to sit next to Elizabeth and although this somehow seemed strange to the rest of the class, no one questioned it, knowing full well of both Draco and Elizabeth's reputation.

Why haven't you been talking to me?
Draco wrote onto her scrap piece of parchment and slipped it over to Elizabeth, to which she replied with a simple,
I've been busy.

Pansy Parkinson and her friends pulled Elizabeth Duncan at the end of the lesson when everyone had left to confront her about her relationship with Draco.

"Spill it, Duncan. What's with you and Draco?"
She huffed and crossed her arms over her chest.
"Absolutely nothing, we're just friends."
Elizabeth said, trying her best to get to her next class on time.

"Draco doesn't just hang around with people especially Gryffindor's just because you're friends, so tell me really what's going on."

"What's it to you? You fancy him, do you?"
To which Pansy seemed embarrassed and taken aback. Duncan pushed passed Pansy and her friends and made her way to class and sat next to Hermione, feeling somewhat annoyed with the encounter with Pugface just before.

And just like that, Elizabeth shut the world off around her and sat through the entire lesson without looking or talking to anyone despite their many attempts to communicate.
