6. Apology Accepted

Hermione Granger was thinking about what the Headmaster had told her a few hours prior to the incident down by the Lake.
"The reason the Duncan family are so powerful is due to the fact that they are all connected by something stronger than the blood that runs through their veins. Every single one of Miss Duncan's relatives are bound to her. The Duncans are also very powerful in wand-less magic, that's why it was simpler for Miss Duncan to use her powers without her wand down by the Lake."
Hermione seemed confused by the statement and Dumbledore didn't expect her to understand as quickly as he did.
"The magical powers that the previous Duncans had possessed are now flowing in Miss Duncan. Like I said, they are bound by something stronger than blood. Once a Duncan passes through to the afterlife, their powers immediately direct themselves to the next heir of the family name, in this case, Miss Duncan. Back at the Black Lake, when she said that her ancestors spared the Slytherin boys, it only means one thing. When the last and only successor of the family is in danger or trouble, Miss Duncan's ancestors step in to keep her alive and safe. Her powers were magnified. That is why she is most dangerous when her emotions are heightened."
Hermione's eyes widened as she finally understood.
"That means that Eliza possesses the amount of magic that her whole family tree holds."
"That is correct, Miss Granger. When the Duncans were plentiful, the magical power was split among them and they were all equal in power until the events of the massacre."

Hermione sat by Elizabeth's bed reading a book, waiting for her to awake any minute from now.

------------
I was having another nightmare. The screams were clearer and the jets of green light that zoomed past my vision frightened me. I could feel the thuds of bodies of my family as they fell. A woman with blood that trickled down the side of her face was looking directly at me.
"Run, Eliza! Run!"
The next thing that happened was blurry and unexplainable, but when everything became clear again, the sight of dead bodies and blood and death masked my vision and I saw as those murderers approached me. I was next.
"The last Duncan. You're next."
A hooded figure hissed menacingly.

I gasped and opened my eyes, I was lying in an unfamiliar bed. I could feel the beads of sweat dripping down my back and my neck. I sat up quickly and someone who was sitting on the seat next to the bed, jumped.
"You're awake! I was getting worried."
Hermione said, handing me a glass of water which I drank greedily.
"What happened?"
I asked, my voice still sounding hoarse after the drink.
"Well, you passed out when you exerted yourself from using too much magic. The good news is, Madam Pomfrey said you're free to go the second you wake up and we'll be able to make it for dinner."
Hermione said and I smiled, thankful that I had a friend.
"Oh, I took the liberty of getting you some clean clothes and I fed Snowball."
Hermione said, handing me a set of clothing. I thanked her and walked into the bathroom to get changed. When I came out, Hermione shut her book and stood up, ready to leave.
"I'm ready."
I announced and we talked about today's events. Hermione told me about what happened after I passed out like how the fourth years got suspended and weren't suffering from any major injuries. The thing that boggled my mind was how I summoned that much magic.
I checked my boot for my wand and sighed in relief when I felt it was still there.
"Wow, is that your wand? Mine looks so plain compared to yours."
Hermione said, pulling out her wand that was about the same size as mine. We were so busy looking at each others wands. We continued to talk and we got to know more about each other until we got to the Great Hall. I saw Professor Dumbledore sat in the middle of the teacher's dinner table, giving his head a small nod as he saw me. The Slytherin table were glaring and scowling at me.

We sat at our usual spots opposite Ron and Harry. Ron didn't meet my eye and stared down at his food.

"Ron has something to say to you, Elizabeth."
Harry said, elbowing Ron in the rib.

"I'm sorry about what I said over dinner last night. It was rude."
Ron said and I contemplated his apology before nodding.

"Apology accepted."
Ron's face seemed to beam and he smiled at me.

"Friends?"
Ron asked, holding his chubby hand out and I shook it.

"Friends."
