4. The last dance

Leo's POV                    *IceCreamBoy*

I hover around the edge of the dance floor. If I went dancing on my own it would look a bit weird. Sighing, I sit on a bench against a wall next to the stage, where some teens, maybe students, were playing slow music. I wish I had my tool belt with me. Then, I would have something to do, like make a wind up helicopter of something. I was so engrossed in my thoughts that I failed to notice the fair-haired girl sit next to me.

"Hi," She said. I jumped and looked at her. Her almost white hair was pinned up into a complex hairstyle. Her dark eyes twinkling as she looked at me. She smirked. "Didn't mean to make you jump."

"Who? Me? Jump? Never..." She laughed softly.

"My name's Winter." Oh gods. She just talked to me. A really cute girl talked to me and acknowledged my existence!! What do I do?, I think, as she smiles at me. Is she expecting me to say my name?

"My name's Leo," I tell her after a few seconds of awkward silence. Without meaning to, I find my right index finger tapping against my knee. I love you. I love you. The girl notices the movement and stands. Oh gods, please don't walk away, please, please.

"Want to dance?" She asks. No, I think. My body ignores my mind as it stands and walks to the edge of the dance floor.

"I'm not that good a dancer," I blurt out. She just keeps smiling.

"You are if I lead," She tells me. She grasps one of my hands and puts the other on her waist. My eyes flicker nervously and she puts her hand on my shoulder. "Relax. I don't bite, Leo Valdez." My eyes widen as we start to dance. How does she know my last name?! Warning bells go off in my mind.

"How do you know my last name?" Smiling, she looks at me, her eyes still twinkling.

"How could I not? You were the seventh wheel, yet the most important of the seven." How does she know so much?? The music comes to a close and we stop dancing. Her eyes look over my shoulder and widen. I look and see Grover and the others looking panicky at me. I look back at Winter. She is now looking to the left of my friends, so I glance that way. Three bulky men in black suits are standing by the entrance. A girl in a sparkly red dress walks up to them. The monster Grover warned us about. I look back at Winter and she looks at me. "Come with me if you want to live, Valdez." She turns and walks quickly to the opposite side of the hall. By the time I catch up, Winter is with two other teens. I could tell they were twins, because both had blonde hair and intelligent  gray eyes. Kids of Athena, maybe? As I reach Winter, the two kids nod at her then jog towards Grover and co. Winter looks at me and grabs my hand and, despite the circumstances, makes me blush. She leads my through a set of double doors and down a hallway. In no time we reach the entrance of the school. She turns to me.

"What's going on?" I ask her, with genuinely no clue about what is going on.

"When you defeated Gaia, you made a certain set of monsters very angry. You and your friends are in danger."

"We're always in danger." She sighs.

"More danger then you are normally," She sighs again and her eyes flicker nervously. I frown.

"What's wrong?" She looks at me.

"I can't be around for too long. Like the gods, I have a case of schizophrenia. I am both good and bad. Your side and the monsters side. You must leave as soon as possible." She looks me straight in the eyes. "Good luck." She gives me a quick kiss on the cheek and runs off. The doors behind me burst open and my friends and the twins burst through.

"The hall might be on fire," Says Jason out of breath. As if on cue the fire alarm starts to go off. I turn to them speechless, then back to Winter, but she is already gone.

"We should go," Says Piper. She puts a hand on my shoulder. "You alright, Leo?" I shake out of my trance.

"Yeah, I'm... I'm good." We jog to the pillars and get our stuff. I look at the twins who already have their bags over their shoulder. "How...?" The girl smiles at me.

"We're kids of Athena. We came prepared," She tells me, as we rush out of the door. Grover looks at them.

"Wait, so you knew you're demigods?" The boy nods.

"Thanks to Winter. She taught us how to use weapons and how to survive monsters." He said.

"Without her we would have never got this far. We should introduce ourselves. I'm Jesse."

"And I'm James."

"Well," Says Jason. "We should probably get going before 'Miss-Fire-Breathing-Red-Dressed-Monster-From-Hell' comes after us."
