As her life as the Duchess of Dorset goes on, she finds that William is not the perfect Duke, or the prince of her dreams. He has some dark secrets too...

13. Disappearance of William

Two days go by and I am still locked up in my room.

I have not heard William's voice outside my door since the day that he locked me up, and I have grown increasingly worried.

Has he gone against his word? Never to open this door? Never to let me see Charles again?

I crawl up from the floor and press my ear against the door, but have no luck. I cannot hear anything on the other side.

I press my forehead up on the door and tears well up in my eyes again. I bang on the door with my fist with frustration and start sobbing again. I turn around and sink down to the floor, and pull up my knees to my chest, burying my head in my dress, which has turned from pure white to grey-black.

Oh God, I am such a mess. What have I done? I think to myself again.

I scrabble up from the floor when I can hear the lock turning.

"You have a delivery of clothes." one guard says to me.

I nod, I am lost for words. I though it was William.

I watch as I step back, the 3 guards who come in, with bags of my clothes.

"May I ask where William is? He has not come for 2 days." I ask the guard bravely, looking at the floor. Somehow, I cannot bring myself to look at the guard, afraid of what he will say.

"The Duke disappeared the night he locked you up, he had not returned to the palace since then. We do not know where he is. He has not given us any more orders other than to deliver your clothes." the guard replies, his voice gruff.

"I see. May I leave this room? To get some fresh air?" I ask again.

"No, the Duke made it very clear to us that you are not allowed to leave this room. He is the only one who permits you to leave this room, and that was not part of the order." the second guard says, firmly.

"You must stay in this room. The Duke will return today, we have predicted." the third guard added.

"I see." I say solemnly, understanding.

The guards retreat out of the room, leaving me alone once again, with three bags of clothes.

I fall onto the bed, bitter.

William has made it so clear that he is ready to leave me, abandon me, too, just like Edward. One night, leaving the palace to see him, and the consequences are disastrous.

Why did I not see this coming?

So William has disappeared from the palace for two days, leaving me alone in this room.

I start to think of where he could have left for, maybe some time alone?

Little did I know, it was so much worse than I thought.
