Gotta Be You

What happens after Jules and Harry get engaged? And what happens when Jules introduces her best friend, Carmen, to Niall? Will he break up with Demi for her or will they keep pretending that they weren't attracted to each other since the moment they met?

*Author Note:* Hey guys! So, this is the sequel to Operation Haylor, which you can find on my profile if you haven't read it. Unfortunately, Josh, the awesome guy who co-wrote Operation Haylor with me, isn't going to be writing any of Gotta Be You (unless he wants to do a bonus chapter or something, which has been discussed, so look out for it possibly).

9. Chapter 9

The next morning, after a kiss and cuddle with Harry, I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and typed a mass text to the boys, their girlfriends, Carmen, and my mom.

Don't eat anything for breakfast.

I hit send and started to roll back the sheets. “Alright, I sent it,” I started as I sat up. “I should-” I giggled as Harry pulled me back to him. “Harry,” I whined. “They'll be here at ten. That's like,” I said, checking my phone, “an hour and a half away. I need to get ready and start making them breakfast,” I told him.

He didn't let go, just buried his face in my hair, breathing in. “I don't want you to,” he told me.

I flipped over so I was facing him. “I don't particularly want to leave you either, but I must get ready.” I ran my fingers through his hair and kissed him. Then kissed him one more time because I couldn't resist, and dashed out of bed.

“Hey,” he called after me sleepily as I ran through the doorway.

“Love you babe,” I called back as I walked down the stairs.

I quite enjoy cooking, so I went all out. I made pancakes, french toast, waffles, laid out bagels, bread, condiments. Harry came down as I was cooking eggs, freshly showered, and hair still wet.

“You're still cooking?” he asked, wrapping his arms around me from behind, then kissing my cheek. “Have you been cooking this whole time?”

“Yes I have. You know I like to cook,” I told him.

“Yes I do,” he agreed, unwrapping his arms from me and surveying all the food I had out.

“Do you think I made too much?” I asked him.

“No. The boys will love it. Especially Niall.”

I laughed. “Good.” I shut off the stove and slid the eggs onto a plate, then wrapped my arms around Harry and kissed him. “I have to go get ready now,” I told him. “It's...” I glanced at the clock on the stove. “Oh my gosh, it's 9:45. I have to go get ready now,” I said, spinning around and starting for the steps.

Harry grabbed my wrist before I could get very far. “One more kiss,” he said.

“One more kiss,” I agreed, smiling up at him. Who cared if I was still in the shower when they got here?

He gently backed me against the counter and grabbed my face. And, okay, maybe it didn't just stop at one kiss. I gently pushed him away after a bit and glanced at the clock over my shoulder. 9:47. Two minutes wasted.

“I gotta go shower now!” I told him.

I ran upstairs, grabbed one of Harry's shirts and a pair of sweats and hopped in the shower.

Miraculously, I made it downstairs at 10:02 and I didn't hear any voices, so I assumed no one was here yet. I wondered down the hallway, peeking inside each room looking for Harry: past the bathroom and the room Harry had dubbed the playroom to my right.

“For when Lux visits,” he'd said when he'd shown me the house. “And our future children,” he'd added with a grin.

“That's very sweet,” I'd told him, “but I'm so not ready for kids yet.”

I peeked in the kitchen and dining room to my left before the hallway ended and I was walking into the living room. Harry was sitting on the couch, watching TV.

I plopped down and snuggled up to him. “That was fast,” Harry stated.

“So they're not here yet?” I asked him.

The doorbell rang before he could answer me. “Guess they are now,” he stated. Before we had the chance to get up, the door opened and Niall appeared.

“Hi!” I said as Harry and I stood up from the couch. I grabbed Niall in a hug, then Demi.

“How are you guys?” I asked, watching Niall circle behind Demi and head down the hall.

“Um, we're good,” Demi answered me distractedly, watching Niall as well.

“We might as well follow him,” I said, shrugging. “I can guess where he's going,” I added with a laugh.

The three of us headed down the hall after Niall who called over his shoulder, “Where's the food? I'm starving.”

“Don't you want to wait and work up a really good appetite?” I teased Niall as we followed after him into the kitchen. He was already pulling a plate out of the cabinet.

“Ha! You're funny,” Niall said.

“Hey!” Carmen called, closing the front door as the rest of us grabbed plates as well. “I'm here! Where are you guys? Hope everybody's decent!”

“In the kitchen!” I called back, setting down my plate.

I ran to the doorway and tackled her in a hug. “Hey, you!

“Hey! I haven't seen you in so long! Oh my gosh!” she said, throwing her arms around me.

“I know!” I agreed.

“It's only been a week,” Harry stated.

Carmen and I untangled ourselves. “Oh, hi Harry!” she said. “Hey Niall!” she said, noticing him now, too. “Demi.”

“Hey Carmen!” Niall greeted her. I got the feeling that he wanted to hug her. It was something in his eyes. But he glanced at Demi, and apparently decided against it. Demi gave Carmen a simple wave. And just like that, the atmosphere became quite awkward.

The energy was fun again as the rest of the boys, their girlfriends, and my parents arrived, though I still noticed funny looks between Niall, Carmen, and Demi.

A half hour later, after we'd all eaten, we were back at my parents' house. The girls, my mom, and I were in charge of packing up my stuff, while my dad and the boys took the boxes to my mom's minivan.

We finished packing up my stuff right after the boys took the first load of boxes to our new home, so we just sat on the bed talking: Danielle and Eleanor at the head, and Demi, my mom, and I sitting on the side.

“That's not fair. You girls are done already?” Liam asked when they got back, surveying my room. Harry and I already had a bed and sheets and everything so those things were staying, We didn't need any of my furniture, so all of the shelves and drawers were bare and empty.

“Yep,” I told him.

“Do you want to at least hand us some boxes or something?” Niall asked.

“Sure,” Carmen said, jumping up right away and handing him a box. “It's the last of Jules' clothes,” she told him.

“It's about time,” Niall said playfully.

I stood up as well and smacked his arm. “Whatever.”

Niall laughed then grabbed the box from Carmen's arms and smiled at her as their hands brushed. I hoped I was blocking Demi's view of them, but I couldn't help glancing at her anyway. Harry caught me looking and shook his head. I widened my eyes at him and he widened his back, continuing to shake his head. His message was clear to me. I shouldn't be looking for her reaction, in case she noticed and it made her even more suspicious. I knew it, but it was so hard to resist.

As I began to turn my head to look at Carmen and Niall again, Harry quickly grabbed me to his chest. I widened my eyes and blinked in surprise. “Harry,” I whined, but threw my arms around him anyway, snuggling against him as inconspicuously as possible.

“I think you're suffocating her Harry,” Liam joked.

He loosened his grip a bit and stroked my hair. As I looked up at him he gave me a playful smile. “She likes it,” he stated, winking at me. “Don't you?”

I laughed. He knew I did, so I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of telling him so.

“And what do we do with this handsome guy here?” Harry asked, letting me go and throwing an arm around the cardboard cutout I had of him and patting its chest.

“I think we should put it in our room,” I mused sarcastically as I sat back down on my bed. “It's a very nice portrait. Very life like.”

“I'm much taller than him,” he said.

I laughed. “True,” I agreed. “But I still think we should keep it somewhere. Then, if you go somewhere without me, I'll still have you. Kinda.”

“As long as you don't kiss him goodnight,” Harry told me, sitting down on the bed with me.

“No promises,” I joked. I didn't want to admit it, but there's a good chance I would kiss it goodnight.

“Shall we shove him in the closet?” he asked.

“No,” I told him, shaking my head. “It would scare me every time I opened it.”

“Yeah, my mom keeps a cutout of me in my old room and every time I go in there it scares the dickens out of me,” Liam said.

We all laughed. Harry chuckled as he wrapped an arm around me. “You're right. We'll find somewhere to put it.”

I turned to Niall as he thumped the box he was holding back on top of the boxes we had stacked against the wall. “You know what's sad?” I asked the room in general. “That you,” I said, turning back to Harry, “are taller than your cardboard cutout. And I'm still shorter than your cutout.”

Niall threw his blonde head back in a laugh. “That's so funny,” he said. “It's so true.” The others laughed along as well, but none like Niall. He was so much fun.

“Now come on, Harry. Stop talking and let's get this stuff out to the van. My arms were getting tired waiting for you.”

“Why didn't you go down without him?” Demi asked.

Niall quickly turned his head slightly to the side and raised an eyebrow. “That's a good question. Why didn't I do that?”

I chuckled and got off the bed. Harry followed me to the stack of boxes. I picked one up off the top, hunching over a little from the weight, as Niall headed out of my room and downstairs. As I slid the box into Harry's arms, he dramatically let his knees give a little bit.

“What on earth is in here?” he asked.

“It's some of my books,” I told him.

“You should know what you're getting into,” Harry told Liam, Zayn, and Louis as he walked by them, towards the door. “These are heavy.”

“I think I can handle it,” Louis told him, flexing his muscles.

“Oh. Well. 'Scuse me,” Harry said sarcastically.
