Gotta Be You

What happens after Jules and Harry get engaged? And what happens when Jules introduces her best friend, Carmen, to Niall? Will he break up with Demi for her or will they keep pretending that they weren't attracted to each other since the moment they met?

*Author Note:* Hey guys! So, this is the sequel to Operation Haylor, which you can find on my profile if you haven't read it. Unfortunately, Josh, the awesome guy who co-wrote Operation Haylor with me, isn't going to be writing any of Gotta Be You (unless he wants to do a bonus chapter or something, which has been discussed, so look out for it possibly).

24. Chapter 24

Hey there! This latest chapter is written mostly by Carmen herself (Earth-to-Jess on Miss Literati) with just a bit of help from me. Hope you like it! :)

*Carmen's Point of View*

I kissed Niall deeply, feeling light headed as he sat on the bed next to me. I couldn’t believe this was finally happening. I thought this would have to mean we were finally together.

The song that had been playing had ended and a moment later, there was a sudden, loud knock on the door, causing Niall and I to break apart suddenly. “Are you coming? I want to watch the movie!” Harry yelled.

“Harry!” I heard Jules scold with a smack. “Come on. Leave them alone.”

Niall ran a hand through his hair. “You wanna go watch the movie?” he asked.

I nodded. “Sure.”

He took my hand and let me to the living room where we were teased by the boys, before Harry was scolded by Jules. I knew she didn’t feel right scolding the others, but it seemed to work to quiet them, too.

Niall and I were handed bowls of popcorn and Zayn turned on Grease as Liam turned out the lights. Jules and Harry were curled up together on the floor, Niall sat against the wall, and the other boys were on the sofas. Everything felt pretty normal, except for the fact that I was overjoyed at the moment. When the movie started, Niall took my hand and held it in the dark. It felt like we had a secret as we sat there, watching the movie together.

The sun was shining high in the sky, warming the small room. Sighing contentedly, remembering the events of last night, I got up and sneaked out to the small kitchen on the other side of the bus. It was half past seven in the morning, but I was the only one up. I could hear Harry snore from his and Jules' room, and Liam was muttering in his sleep. Quiet as I could, I poured myself some cereal and milk and sat down on the couch. It was totally silent except for the dull hum of the engine of the bus as we travelled on to our next stop. That is, till the peaceful, sleepy silence was broken by unnecessarily loud heavy metal. I grabbed my phone, the source of the music, and checked the screen. It read Call from Demi. Surprised, I answered it.

“Hello?” I asked quietly.

“Carmen!” was the cheerful reply. “Hey, how are you?”

“I'm fine, Demi, but it's really early over here; everyone's asleep.”

I heard her laugh. “Well that explains it!”

“What do you mean?”

“Well I was trying to call Niall, but he wouldn't answer his phone. I finally gave up and decided to call you. I figured you'd be with him”

I tried to ignore the slightly accusatory tone in her voice. “Well, he's sleeping, so if I can take a message?”

“Oh, no, it's fine, dear. It's for Niall's ears only.”

“Oh, um, okay. Well, bye.”

“Bye bye!”

It was a short call, less than a minute, but it was one of the most awkward I'd ever had. I set the phone down, just in time for it to be snatched up by Jules.

“Who was that?” she asked. She was still in her pajamas, and immediately I felt guilty for waking her.

“Just Demi,” I said. “Here, come sit.”

She plopped down on the couch beside me. “What did she want?”

“I don't know. She said it was for 'Niall's ears only',” I said, making air bunnies, “whatever that means.”

“Huh. Speaking of Niall, we didn't get a chance to talk last night,” she wiggled her eyebrows at me. Jules had fallen asleep during the movie last night, and Harry had carried her off to bed.

I laughed. “Jules, Jules, nothing happened. We argued, we kissed, then we came out and watched the movie.” It was a bit of an understatement, but I still wasn’t positive this meant we were together, at least not officially.

She nodded, not even surprised. “Harry says he's been pining over you since you set foot on this bus.”

I could feel myself blush. “Well, no more. I think we're officially together.” The words barely left my lips before she squealed and hugged me.

“That's great!”

“What's great?” We looked up and Liam was leaning on the doorway, looking at us like we'd sprouted second heads.

“Carmen and Niall are together, isn't that great?” Jules said, squeezing my hand.

“Well, I mean, I think maybe we are,” I added.

His face fell, but only for a moment. “That is great, really great. Congratulations, Carmen.”

I was about to say something when the rest of One Direction entered the room.

“Good morning!” hollered Louis, wearing a bright red onesie. “It's a big day today!”

“Come on, guys! We're playing Dublin!” Harry said.

Everyone cheered, me and Niall especially (I wasn’t sure if Niall would remember, but he’d said he’d take me around Ireland. I couldn’t wait for that if it actually happened), and we all began getting ready.

We arrived just two hours after that, seven hours before our performance. The band was already there rehearsing and the boys rushed to join them, leaving me with Jules. We milled around the city, trying to lay low because there was a good chance people would recognize us know, me being One Direction’s opening act and Jules being Harry’s wife.

When we got back, it was only half an hour before I was supposed to go onstage. The venue was completely full, the show had sold out, and everyone was chanting “One Direction! One Direction!” I ran to the makeup station and let one of the many assistants do my hair and makeup before changing. I let myself be directed to the stair leading up to the stage to wait for my cue. To my surprise, Niall was already there. He was pacing, phone in hand, looking around the room when his eyes landed on me.

“Carmen!” he said, rushing towards me. “Where were you?”

“I was out with Jules,” I assured him, “why?”

“Oh, I was nervous you might be late,” he said, laughing. “I wanted to give you something before you went onstage.”

Before I could tell him I still had ten minutes, another voice shouted to him from across the room. “Niall!”

We both turned and saw Demi running towards us, full throttle. “Niall, hi! Babe, did you miss me?”

“Demi?” I asked, looking between her and Niall.

“Hey, Carmen! Didn't Niall tell you I was coming?”

I blinked. “Um, no. He must have forgotten to mention it.”

“Or he wanted our meeting to be private,” she mused, “people tend to want privacy when their girlfriend visits them for the first time in months.”
