Gotta Be You

What happens after Jules and Harry get engaged? And what happens when Jules introduces her best friend, Carmen, to Niall? Will he break up with Demi for her or will they keep pretending that they weren't attracted to each other since the moment they met?

*Author Note:* Hey guys! So, this is the sequel to Operation Haylor, which you can find on my profile if you haven't read it. Unfortunately, Josh, the awesome guy who co-wrote Operation Haylor with me, isn't going to be writing any of Gotta Be You (unless he wants to do a bonus chapter or something, which has been discussed, so look out for it possibly).

16. Chapter 16

"How long have I been asleep?" Harry asked me.
"I don't know," I told him. "Maybe an hour or two?"
"Come on," he said, sitting us up. "Let's go inside. I'm sure you want to know what Simon's meeting was about." He stood and extended his hand to pull me up.
"I do," I agreed as we walked toward the car. He grabbed his bag out, locked the doors, then we made our way back to the house, arms wrapped around each other. "I was imagining what your trip was like part of the time you were sleeping," I told him as he opened the door.
"And what did you imagine Simon's news was?" he asked as we stepped into the living room.
"I didn't," I admitted as we untangled and he dropped his bag by the door. "I imagined your trip, and getting to Simon's office, and I imagined the beginning of your conversation, but I couldn't come up with an explanation. I tried, but in the end I just skipped to you seeing your mom and Gemma."
"Ah. They say hello by the way. They were disappointed I didn't bring you," he told me.
"Aw," I said, smiling. "That's nice to hear. So, I'm dying here, Harry. What did Simon say?"
"Let's sit down on the sofa," he told me.
"Okay," I agreed.
After we'd sat down and gotten comfortable, he turned to me and took my hands in his.
"So," he started. "Simon told us One Direction's going to do this big charity concert in London in September. He's been planning it for a while, and he's going to announce it to the public next week."
"That's a really good idea! That's so nice!" I said.
"Yeah, it is," he continued. "We have to go to London for a little before the concert to rehearse and get ready for it. He's also going to announce we're doing a mini tour in Europe from October until the middle of November."
"Oh," I said sadly.
"What's the matter? I thought you'd be excited."
"Are you going to be back for Thanksgiving?" I asked.
"What do you mean 'me'? You're coming, too!" he told me, grabbing me in a hug. "You didn't think I'd go without you? We're married now! They have to left me bring you!"
"Really?" I asked excitedly, throwing my arms around him. "I get to go on tour with you?"
"Yes. That's the reaction I was looking for by the way," he stated. "But that's not the biggest news."
Carmen's Point of View
I didn't know why I was so popular all of a sudden. Right after I hung up with Niall, I was about to call Jules, when another unfamiliar number popped up on my phone.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Hello, is this Carmen?" a familiar voice asked me.
"Yes," I answered slowly, trying to place the voice.
"This is Simon Cowell." Oh my gosh! "I'm sure you've heard of me." Of course I've heard of you! "I'm calling because the boys from One Direction gave me your number. They would like you to come on tour with them."
"They what?" I asked. Did Jules convince Harry to do this? Why didn't I know they were going on tour?
"We'd like you to come to London this week so we can audition you and talk this over," Simon continued. "Will that work for you?"
"Um, yeah," I sputtered.
"Great. We'll get in contact with you again to get your trip set up. See you soon," Simon concluded.
"Uh, yeah, see you."
Jules' Point of View
"Really? That's not the biggest news? What could top that? You've already asked me to marry you. Are you pregnant?" I joked.
Harry chuckled. "Simon wanted us to pick an opening act. Niall suggested Carmen. I'm the only one-besides apparently Niall-who's heard her sing and play, so when Simon asked the others what they thought, they obviously couldn't answer. Simon wasn't sure. He kept saying we should think about it. Niall fought for her. Hard. Simon's going to fly her to London so he and the boys can see if they want her to do the charity show and come on tour with us."
Carmen's Point of View
"Welcome to London Carmen," Simon said as he ushered me inside the conference room. "Are you enjoying your trip so far?"
"Yeah, I am. Thanks," I told him. "I used to live in Europe so it's nice to be back."
"Great. The boys should be here soon. You can have a seat while we wait," Simon offered, motioning to a chair.
This room was just a typical conference room with a white board, a table with 12 chairs around it, and no windows. I wondered if the no windows thing was supposed to minimize distractions. The rest of the building, though, from what I'd seen, was intimidatingly spectacular.
"Thank you," I told him, sitting down at a corner of the table and leaning my guitar against my chair. I kept a hand on the case to make sure it didn't fall and because it was a bit comforting to hold on to it.
Simon circled the room and took the chair at the head at the opposite end of the table. So far he had been extremely pleasant. Nice, in fact. I was all too aware, though, that this man was extremely powerful. In a few minutes he could launch my musical career. And it would be easy for him. But he could also choose not to help me. And rub it in. In a few moments he could be crushing me. I'd seen Simon judge. I practically felt the contestants' pain, being a musician. I didn't want to have to go through it myself.
Just then the boys came bursting through the door. Niall was in first, laughing with the other boys. When he noticed me in the room he immediately stopped-laughing and walking.
"Hello boys," Simon greeted them, standing up. "Nice to see you. Please have a seat."
The boys calmed down a little, but everyone except Niall was still smirking.
"Hello Simon," Liam said, taking a seat to Simon's left. "Hello Carmen. Nice to see you."
"Hi," I replied shyly.
Zayn and Louis greeted me and Simon as well, sitting next to Liam. Niall headed to the opposite side of the table, to me.
"Hello Carmen," he mumbled quietly as he took the seat next to me. He wheeled his chairs closer, threw his arms around me, and kissed my cheek. My whole body warmed at his touch. "How are you?" he asked as he pulled away, still just above a whisper.
"I'm really nervous," I admitted to him at the same volume.
"Don't be," he told me, grabbing the hand that wasn't holding my guitar in his and giving it a gentle squeeze. "You're an amazing guitar player and singer. Just imagine it's the two of us in Harry's basement again," he instructed intently, staring into my eyes.
"Niall can we get this started?" Simon asked him sharply.
Niall turned to him. "Yeah, sure," Niall answered in his normal carefree tone, letting go of my hand, inconspicuously sliding his chair back, and grinning. "Sorry Simon."
"Carmen," Simon continued, turning to me. "We all know why we're here. Why don't we just get started. What do you say?"
"Sure," I told him timidly.
"Have you had any experience with this kind of thing?" Simon asked.
"I have," I told him, trying to be confident but not really feeling like it. "I've played some shows before. Nothing One Direction big," I added, "but a decent amount of people."
"Good. Are you ready to play for us?" Simon asked.
"Sure," I told him, pulling my guitar into my lap.
"What are you going to play for us today?" he asked.
"I'm going to play an original song I wrote," I stated as I slid my guitar out of its case, then pulled it into my lap.
"Perfect," he replied, leaning back in his chair. "Whenever you're ready," he told me as I got situated.
"Thank you for that, Carmen," Simon said after I'd finished. "The boys and I will need to discuss this and we'll get back to you."
"No signature Simon Cowell feedback?" I asked, shrugging.
Simon quickly sighed and said, "You have a natural potential. It would need some work before the show, which is normal. Are you up for that?" I nodded eagerly. "That's good," he said with a smile and perhaps a twinkle in his eye. "You have a lot of promise, Carmen. There's something about you. Either way, this is not solely my decision. This is the boys' band," he said, gesturing to Zayn, Louis, and Liam. "We already know how Niall feels and Harry is biased for obvious reasons. Thank you for coming. I'm going to have to ask you to leave now. So we can make our decision, you understand," he added in a way that was firm but still managed to be kind, oddly enough.
"Thank you Simon. Really. So much," I said giddily as I put my guitar back in its case and stood. "I completely understand. Thanks for having me."
"I'll be right back," Niall said as I practically flew out the door. I felt like I must have been inches off the ground, at least. Before the door could close behind me or anyone could protest, Niall had followed me into the hall.
"You were incredible, Carmen," Niall told me, seemingly as excited as I felt.
"Thank you. That was awesome, wasn't it? I mean, what Simon said," I clarified excitedly.
"Yes. You're going to be our opening act, Carmen. I promise you. There's no way the boys won't agree. I can't wait to go on tour with you," he told me. Then he put his hands on the wall behind my head and kissed me.
