Gotta Be You

What happens after Jules and Harry get engaged? And what happens when Jules introduces her best friend, Carmen, to Niall? Will he break up with Demi for her or will they keep pretending that they weren't attracted to each other since the moment they met?

*Author Note:* Hey guys! So, this is the sequel to Operation Haylor, which you can find on my profile if you haven't read it. Unfortunately, Josh, the awesome guy who co-wrote Operation Haylor with me, isn't going to be writing any of Gotta Be You (unless he wants to do a bonus chapter or something, which has been discussed, so look out for it possibly).

12. Chapter 12

“Demi,” I heard Niall say from the kitchen, his voice sounding urgent. The living room became silent. Everyone was listening for what would be said.

I glanced at Harry, startled and wide eyed. He looked down at me and gave my hair two slow strokes, trying to calm me before looking back up at the hallway entrance, listening. With one of the arms he had wrapped around me, he rubbed my side with his thumb. I tried hard to contain the shivers he was giving me.

A door closed, probably the basement, and I turned my attention back to the hallway entrance, too. “Niall, let me go,” Demi said, with a warning in her voice.

“Demi, we have to talk. We can't just end it like this. I think you're an amazing girl. I-”

“You should have thought of that before you started cheating right in front of me.”

“Demi, come on.”

You come on. I'm so over this, Niall. You clearly like Carmen. Aren't I doing you a favor?” she asked snidely. “You know what, Niall? I didn't even really like you, not like you liked me. I just decided to date you because I was lonely and you were pathetic,” she hissed. “So this is fine. I'll find someone else. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm leaving. Have a nice life.”

Demi's heals clicked into the hall, then she paused and sighed sadly.

She walked into the living room with a fake, sad smile on her face. The pain in her eyes was clear. She looked like she was trying not to cry. “Demi,” I whispered.

“Thanks so much for having me Jules, Harry.” I untangled myself from Harry and hugged her.

“Thanks for coming,” I said.

She nodded, said bye to the others, and headed out. Niall didn't come out of the kitchen. He didn't follow her.

None of us made a move, we just sat there and stared at each other. Finally, Harry stood up from the couch, breezed by me, resting on a hand on my hip and quickly kissing me, before heading to the kitchen.

**Harry's Point of View**

“Niall,” I said, putting a hand on his back. He had his head in his hands, his elbows propped up on the island. “You okay?”

“Yeah. I think I'm just going to go home though. I'm not really in the party mood anymore, you know?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I said. “Hey, don't take this so hard, okay? Demi didn't mean it. She was just upset. And who wouldn't be upset about losing you? I would just die Nialler.” I gently teased, putting a hand to my heart, trying to lighten the mood. “Call me if you need anything, alright?”

“Yeah, thanks Harry,” he said. “Tell Jules to tell Carmen I'm sorry, okay?”

“Sure.” I nodded. He headed back out to the living room, and I heard him saying his goodbyes. The others agreed it was time for them to go as well. I leaned against the counter, arms crossed, waiting for Jules. I knew she'd come out here to talk to me. It was only a matter of moments.

A minute later, there she was. She rested her forehead against my chest and I pushed off from the counter and wrapped my arms around her. She wrapped her arms around me, too.

“Mmm,” she said, sighing through her nose.

“Niall wanted me to ask you to tell Carmen he was sorry,” I told her. “You should really go talk to her.”

She pulled away from me and said, “Yeah, I should. Do you wanna come with me?”

“No,” I told her, shaking my head. “She needs you right now. I'll clean up, then wait for you upstairs,” I told her.

**Jules' Point of View**

“Carmen?” I whispered as I closed the basement door and tiptoed down the stairs.

I found her sitting in Harry's recording room, a guitar on her lap, staring at the wall.

She looked up at me, and neither of us said a word as I sat down.

“Niall told Harry to tell me to tell you that,” I said, “he was sorry.” I heaved a sigh after spitting out that mouthful. I smiled sadly when she made no reaction to my dramatics.

Carmen leaned forward and buried her head in my shoulder. I threw my arms around her and we sat that way for a few moments. “For leaving or because he's going to get back together with Demi?” she asked as she pulled away from me.

I shrugged. “I don't know,” I told her sympathetically. "But I know it means that he cares. He wanted to make sure you got that apology. And by me because he knows we're best friends and I would be the one you wanted to hear it from," I told her. I decided in that moment I wouldn't tell her about Demi and Niall's fight. She might have heard it, but if she didn't, I wouldn't add anything else to her list of reasons to feel bad.

She nodded. “I'm sorry about your party, Jules,” she told me.

“It's okay.”

“Hey, babe, is it okay if Carmen stays the night?” I asked Harry. He was sitting in bed, flipping through channels on our flat screen TV. “I'll set her up in the guest bedroom. She'll be in there tomorrow night, anyway.”

“Of course it's okay,” Harry said. He stood, dropped the remote on the bed, strode over to me, swept me into his arms and kissed my forehead. “It's your house, too, love. How's she doing?”

“She's not as good as she pretends to be, but I'm sure she'll be alright. I just thought it would be, you know, nice if she'd stay the night. Then I can make her breakfast in the morning, and she doesn't have to drive home tonight. It's not like it's that far away, but still. She's alone there, you know?”

“Hello kitty,” I said, scooping up Misty and kissing her head as I headed into me and Harry's room. Carmen was all set up in the guest room. Time for bed.

I sighed as I flopped down on the bed. “So, that was eventful, huh?”

“It was,” Harry agreed. “It was kind of about time Niall and Demi broke up, anyway. Niall's crush on Carmen hasn't gone away at all. In fact, I'm positive it's only gotten stronger. And it's obviously the same for Carmen, though she didn't really have a reason to will her feelings away. It wasn't fair to any of them for Niall and Demi to keep dating.”

“Yeah, I know. What Demi said was really harsh, though.”

“I know. I'm a little worried about Niall for that. But it'll all be okay, love. I'll check on him in the morning. There's really nothing we can do right now.” I nodded. Of course he was right. He always seemed to be right. “It was a lovely party before that, though,” he said.

“Oh yeah?” I asked.

“Definitely. It was an entire day of lovely. You're very good to me,” he said.

“Am I?” I challenged.

“Oh, yes,” he said. “Do you feel I deserve it?” he asked me.

“Harry,” I said, “I feel you deserve every good thing this world could possible offer. And I'm incredibly happy you've including me in that list.”

Misty jumped out of my arms and trotted out of the room as he grabbed me and held me tight. “How did I find you?” he asked.

“I found you, remember?” I teased.

“I am extremely glad and lucky that you did,” he said.

“No,” I told him, shaking my head. “We were blessed. God brought us together. And I am the most ecstatic person in the world because He did.”

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you more.” I pulled away from him. “So, you dressed up for our guest, huh?” I teased him, running a hand over his pajama-clad thigh.

He chuckled, grabbed me, and kissed me. “Thought you'd be glad if I covered up for Carmen.”

I laughed. “I am at that. You're mine, Mr. Styles.”

“And you're mine, Mrs. Styles.”
