Gotta Be You

What happens after Jules and Harry get engaged? And what happens when Jules introduces her best friend, Carmen, to Niall? Will he break up with Demi for her or will they keep pretending that they weren't attracted to each other since the moment they met?

*Author Note:* Hey guys! So, this is the sequel to Operation Haylor, which you can find on my profile if you haven't read it. Unfortunately, Josh, the awesome guy who co-wrote Operation Haylor with me, isn't going to be writing any of Gotta Be You (unless he wants to do a bonus chapter or something, which has been discussed, so look out for it possibly).

10. Chapter 10

Hey guys! So, It's been almost three weeks since I put out a chapter, though I did put out a different story, but I'd like to apologize because I know it's torturous to wait. I've been really busy with a lot of different things lately so I appreciate your patience with me :)

“I think we should get a cat,” Harry stated later that night as we were lying in bed, boxes stacked in the room around us.
“Hm,” I said thoughtfully. I liked cats. Could be nice. “Might as well,” I quoted his tattoo, smirking.
He laughed, pulling me closer to him and kissing my head. He knew me too well.
***Carmen's POV”””
The night after we helped Jules move into her and Harry's place, they invited us back for a little welcome home party. Jules said it was just going to be One Direction, the girlfriends, and her family for a little. I didn't understand why she felt she needed to keep having us over, but I liked it. Any chance to see Niall...I mean Jules.
At seven thirty, on the dot, I let myself in to Jules and Harry's house. Tunes were blasting from Harry's impressive stereo system, but Jules and Harry weren't in sight.
    “Guys?” I yelled.
“Behind the couch!” Jules called back.
What?  I thought as I walked around their big, insanely soft brown couch.
Jules and Harry were sitting with their backs to me. They were sitting in the same position-one of their legs was lying in a half criss-cross, their entire thighs pressed against each others, and their other knees were pulled to their chest. They were so close and so much alike. I wished I could be that way with Niall.
“Hey Carmen!” Jules said excitedly, looking at me over her shoulder.
“What are you guys doing?” I asked.
“Come sit and see,” Harry said, patting the space of white carpet next to him.
As I walked around the two of them, I saw they were sitting in front of an adorable, really fluffy little kitten. “Aw!” I squealed. I sat down with them so we surrounded it in a little half circle.
It was white, except for the diamond on it's face and its ears which were gray.
“Isn't she adorable?” Jules asked, scooping the kitty up and hugging it to her chest. The two of them looked at me expectantly, Jules green eyes just above the cat's striking blue ones.
    “She is!” I agreed.
“She's a Birman kitty,” Jules told me. “We named her Misty.”
“She's really cute,” I told her.
“We were actually going to ask you to stay here with her the night after tomorrow,” Jules informed me.
    “Why?” I asked.
“I got a call right after we got her,” Harry said as Jules kissed Misty and gently placed her back on the floor. “Simon wants One Direction to come to London for a big meeting, just for a day. We leave early morning and get back the next evening.”
“Oh, sure. I'd love to,” I told them as Misty rubbed her face against my leg.
An hour later, Demi, Harry, Jules, and her parents sat on the couch while the rest of us danced on the other side of the living room. The youngest of Jules' brothers sat in one corner, playing with Misty, the other one hadn't shown up.
We danced in a group, but if there were partners, Niall and I obviously would have to couple up. We stood the closest, and everyone else dancing was dating each other. So far, the only music played had been up beat anyway. The boys didn't take themselves seriously at all when dancing, and it was hilarious. My smile was big and my heart thumped happily as I danced, my eyes on Niall, except when they glanced at Demi. I still thought it was past time for a slow song, though.
I decided to peek at Demi again, and noticed that the group at the couch were standing up. Jules' mom, Natoli, gave out hugs, and waved at our group. “Bye guys!” she called.
“Bye Natoli!” we all chorused back.
Natoli, Jules' dad, and her little brother headed out and a second later the song ended.
Liam and Danielle broke away from the group, hand-in-hand, and walked up to Jules. “Can we get something to drink?” he asked her. “I'm so thirsty now,” he said, sounding exhausted. We'd been dancing for a while.
“Why didn't you ask me?” Harry asked. “It was my house first,” he told him.
“I don't know,” Liam replied. “Jules is the lady of the house now. It seemed like I should ask her.”
“That's so weird,” Jules said quietly, clearly mulling that over as she looked down at her lap. I knew she found it odd to be a “grown up” and having all the responsibilities that came with it and being married to Harry. “Of course,” Jules said to Liam, perky again now as she looked back at him. “Wanna come, Demi?” she asked.
“Sure,” Demi said, standing up and looping her arm through Jules'. I couldn't believe my luck as Jules led her, Liam, Danielle, and Harry to the kitchen.
“Wanna go too?” Louis asked Eleanor.
Eleanor nodded as Perrie said, “Let's go too,” and laced an arm through Zayn's. Niall and I kept dancing. He pulled a goofy face at me as the four of them walked out. The song ended and, finally, a slow one came on. This kept getting better.
Niall smiled at me. “Want to do dance?” he asked, extending his hand.
“Of course,” I told him. I grabbed his hand and he pulled me close to him. I rested my head on his shoulder as we swayed around Jules' living room. I closed my eyes for the chorus and when I opened them back up before the second verse, Demi was standing in the hallway, glaring at me and gritting her teeth. She glared at me as she calmly walked to the sofa. After she sat down, she didn't even glance at us again. I wasn't sure if Niall realized she was in the room, considering his back was to her, but either way we kept dancing.
When the song ended, I noticed that not only Demi had walked in. Everyone had, and they were all sitting on the couch, talking and trying not to stare at me and Niall. I barely paid attention as I untangled myself from Niall, unable to remove my eyes from Demi.
I finally looked at Niall as he asked, “Wanna go get a drink now?”
    “Sure,” I told him.
As he headed down the hallway, I turned back to Demi. She still wasn't looking at us, but I kept a few feet between Niall and I as I followed down the hall after him anway.
Niall poured some water into a plastic cup and handed it to me before pouring some for himself.
I watched him over the rim of my cup as we both took a sip. He placed his cup on the counter and turned to me.
“I really feel like playing the guitar right now,” he told me.
So we weren't going to talk about Demi. That relaxed me. And I loved when he played the guitar. This was a good subject. I felt more at ease as I said, “Why don't we go find one of Harry's guitars?”
Niall thought for a second, then nodded. “He's got a studio in the basement,” he told me. “Let's go,” he said, heading to a door across the room.
He put a hand on the door knob. “Coming?” he asked me over his shoulder..
