******

A couple of days had passed since then, and Harry spent every moment of the day with Carter. He’d chat to her about the old memories they shared, and cuddled her when she was down. She was discharged from the hospital yesterday, so they went straight back home.

Carter had been very affectionate towards Harry. Sneakily pecking him on the cheek every so often, telling him she loves him frequently and never wanting to leave his arms.

The bad news is, she didn’t remember Liam or any of the boys for that matter. Harry said he would wait until later to go through it with her. She didn’t remember Lucy, Tom or Jake either, which was a good thing I guess. To Carter, Harry was her hero and could never do anything wrong. But we all know that that is far from the truth.

Today, Carter and Harry were visiting his mum and stepdad. Anne, Harry’s mum, had been in and out of the hospital a lot over the past couple of days, checking up on the pair. She invited them both over to dinner tonight as she knew Harry was working extremely hard with Carter.

“Carter, it’s time to get up.” Harry shook Carter lightly as she peacefully lay in bed. She let out a slight groan and opened her eyes ever so slightly to let the blindingly bright sun shine in. She shut her eyes closed immediately after exposing them to the light and rolled over to the other side of the bed. “What would you like for breakfast?” Harry asked, sitting down beside Carter. “I don’t mind.” She replied, stretching her arms and gazing up at Harry with her big brown eyes. “Toast?” Harry inquired. “Yes please.” Carter croaked quietly. Harry nodded and left the room, skipping downstairs and strolling into the kitchen.

Carter yawned sleepily before pulling her stiff body up and climbing out of bed. She tied up her red hair into a messy bun and scampered downstairs. “Morning Harry.” She mumbled, rubbing her weary eyes. “Hey Carter, did you sleep well?” Harry questioned, buttering his and Carter’s toast. “Yeah, did you?” Carter responded, smiling that beautiful smile of hers. “Yeah.” Harry said, despite the huge bags that hung underneath his eyes.

Carter hummed a quiet little tune and sat down whilst Harry brought over the food. He handed Carter her plate and began to devour his toast. “Thank you.” Carter tittered, taking a small bite from her toast. “No problem.” Harry smiled warmly, sending a slight shiver up Carter’s spine. After she had eaten her food, she put her plate in the sink and glided into the sitting room.

Harry soon followed her and sat down on the couch. Carter instantly scooted closer to him and put her head on his lap. He played with a couple of loose strands of her hair as they watched a movie. “Harry?” Carter whispered. “Yeah?” Harry looked down at Carter. “Can you tell me more stories about what we used to do together?” she asked him. “Of course.” Harry chuckled before beginning to share one of the memories that they shared.

“Come on Carter, we need to go!” Harry bellowed through the house as Carter pounded down the stairs. “Ready?” he questioned. Carter gave him a small nod. He put on his jacket and handed Carter hers. Suddenly, his phone rand in his pocket.

Incoming Call – Liam (:

Harry sighed as he gazed at the caller ID. “What’s wrong Harry?” Carter quizzed, glancing up at her curly-haired friend. “N-Nothing. I just need to take this call. Wait in the car, I’ll be there in a moment.” He told her. She did as she was told and leaped into the car. Harry took a deep breath and answered the call.

“Hello?”

“HARRY!”

“Hey Liam.”

“Why the fuck hasn’t Carter been answering my calls?!”

“There was a small accident Liam….”

“AN ACCIDENT?! IS CARTER OK?!”

“Yeah, she’s fine now.”

“WHAT HAPPENED?!”

“…. She got run over.”

“Shit! Did she break any bones?!”

“No…. it’s a bit worse than that…”

“What is it then?!”

“… She has amnesia.”

“WHAT?!”

“… And depression.”

“WHAT?!”

“The doctors prescribed her with medication. She’s doing fine.”

“This is my entire fault.”

“Liam, it’s nobody’s fault. It was just a freak accident.”

“Can I speak to her?”

“She can’t remember anything, remember?”

“Oh shit. Look, I’ll be back in two weeks.”

“Okay. See you then.”

“Bye mate.”

Harry hung up the phone and shoved it in his pocket. He strolled into the car and climbed into the driver’s seat. “Who was that?” Carter asked. “Liam.” Harry retorted. “Who’s Liam?” Carter queried, confusion spreading across her face. “Your brother.” Harry answered, gazing at a gobsmacked Carter. “I have a brother?!” she exclaimed. “Yup. He’s 2 years older than you.” Harry said. “Really? That’s so cool! Do we look alike?” Carter questioned. “A small bit. I’ll show you a picture when we go home.” Harry smiled. “Thanks!” Carter beamed, placing a kiss on Harry’s cheek as he drove into his estate.

They arrived at the house and Harry parked in the driveway. They stepped out of the car and knocked on the front door. The door swung open to reveal Anne smiling warmly at the pair. She kissed Harry on the cheek and hugged Carter tightly before gesturing them inside. They were greeted kindly by Harry’s stepdad Robin as they approached the kitchen. Carter had remembered Robin and Anne from their previous visits to the hospital.

Harry slumped onto the chair and pulled Carter onto his lap. He engaged into a deep conversation with his mum and stepdad while Carter played with the buttons on his shirt, much too enthralled in her own thoughts to emerge in conversation with anyone. Every once and a while, Harry and his family had to stifle a giggle as they noticed the look of deep concentration on Carter’s face as she tied and untied the buttons on Harry’s shirt numerous times.

Some time later, everyone sat themselves at the dinner table, munching away on the delicious food that Anne had cooked. Harry and Carter complimented her cooking many a time as they ate every single scrap of food on their plate.

“Carter, would you like to take a look at Harry’s baby pictures?” Anne quizzed after everyone had finished eating. “Mum!” Harry moaned. Carter giggled before nodding eagerly. The four of them ventured into the sitting room and sat near the fireplace. Harry once again placed Carter onto his lap, hugging her tightly. She pecked his lips as Robin rooted in the presses for the pictures.

He eventually found them, much to Harry’s annoyance. Everyone looked at the pictures, each of them as adorable as the other. Harry grimaced at most of the pictures, knowing how embarrassing they were.

“Harry? Can I speak to you in the kitchen for a moment?” Anne asked. Harry furrowed his eyes in confusion but nodded anyway. He lifted Carter off his lap and followed his mum out to the kitchen while Robin and Carter continued to ridicule Harry’s baby pictures.

“What’s wrong mum?” Harry asked in a hushed tone. “Your teacher called. She said you haven’t been in school for over two weeks.” Anne said, crossing her arms. “Mum I can ex-” Harry began, but his mum was having none of it. “I thought we talked about skipping school Harry!” Anne raised her voice a little. Harry remained silent and looked down.

“Harry, you’re a very intelligent young man. Why do you have to act so stupid?!” Anne questioned sternly. “Mum, I’m not skipping, I promise. I just can’t leave Carter!” Harry told her. “What are you talking about Harry?” Anne quizzed. “The doctors told me she can’t go back to school for a couple of days. What am I supposed to do? Leave her home alone?” Harry inquired. “Harry that young girl’s state has nothing to do with your education. Why don’t you leave her here with me?” Anne asked.

“But I’m the one responsible for her depression! I caused it mum!” Harry explained, a tear trickling down his cheek. He put his head in his hands, wiping his tears. Anne sighed as she glanced at her son. “This is my last chance to show Carter how much I love her mum. I need to stand by her.” Harry whispered. “I’m so proud of you Harry.” Anne smiled, pulling her son into her embrace and hugging him tightly.

After their beautiful mother-and-son-moment, Harry and Anne returned to the sitting room. Carter noticed Harry’s presence and ran up to him, displaying a picture in her hand. “Look Harry! Robin let me keep this!” she showed him the picture whilst grinning.

It was a picture of him and Carter, aged 10. It was the same day when Harry lost one of his front teeth, and he spent the day chasing Carter with his blood-filled tooth.

“I remember this day!” Harry beamed. “What happened on that day Harry?” Carter inquired. “I’ll tell you later. Come on, let’s go home.” Harry said. Carter nodded. “Goodbye Anne! Bye Robin! Thank you for the lovely dinner and cute baby pictures!” Carter winked as Harry took her hand. Anne and Robin waved goodbye as Harry and Carter climbed into the car once again.

“Did you have a good time tonight Carter?” Harry asked, rubbing Carter’s leg gently. “Yeah, it was really fun. Thanks for taking me!” Carter grinned excitedly. “No problem babe.” He smiled. They arrived home very soon and went inside. A wave of tiredness instantly washed over Carter and Harry when they stepped inside the warm house.

“I think I’m going to go to bed.” Carter yawned. “Yeah, me too. Do you want a drink before you go up?” Harry queried. “Um… no thank you.” Carter replied. “Alright. Night Carter.” Harry whispered, hugging Carter tightly. “Goodnight Harry.” Carter kissed Harry’s cheek softly before heading up to bed.

Harry strolled into the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water. He then journeyed into the guest room, deciding that it was best not to stay in Carter’s bed. He switched on the television and flicked through a couple of channels. He eventually came across a channel of his liking, and put the remote down. He stripped down to his boxers and climbed into bed, sitting up into a relaxing position.

A small while later, the door swung open and there stood Carter in the doorway. “Carter, is everything alright?” Harry asked in a soft tone. Carter bit her trembling lip as a tear fell from her eye. Harry’s expression filled with wariness. “Come here babe.” He said, pulling the duvet forward and patting the empty space beside him. Carter walked slowly over to the bed and climbed in. she pulled the duvet over her tiny frame.

Harry pulled her closer to him until their bodies touched. He wiped a tear from her eye as she cuddled into his chest. “I’m sorry.” She croaked. “Don’t be. You’re safe with me princess.” Harry said, kissing Carter’s forehead and stroking her cheek softly with his thumb until she began to slowly drift to sleep. Harry soon fell asleep himself.

* * * * *

Today, it was the first day back at school since the accident. She was slightly nervous as she didn’t know anyone, not that she had many friends anyway, but she wasn’t aware of that in this moment of time. Harry had convinced her that everything was going to be fine.

A few days had passed since the dinner at Harry’s house, and Harry and Carter are as close as ever. Sure, sometimes she would be upset but Harry didn’t mind, because all she needed was for him to cuddle or comfort her and she would be fine again. She’s also been taking her tablets without a problem, which was slightly shocking to Harry for some reason. But, all in all, everything was going brilliantly.

Carter and Harry both got change into their clothes. Harry was kind of nervous too, because he knew Lucy would’ve told everyone about him and Carter. But quite frankly, he couldn’t have cared less.

“Ready to go?” Harry quizzed as Carter scurried down the stairs. “Yup.” Carter grinned, putting her bag on her back. Harry grabbed his bag also and headed out the door. They decided to walk to school as it was quite mild out.

“Harry what if they don’t like me?” Carter spoke as butterflies erupted in her stomach. “Don’t worry Carter. I’ll be with you at all times anyways.” Harry took her hand and squeezed it gently. Carter nodded and bit her lip. Harry could understand why Carter was nervous. I mean, as long as Lucy and Tom were around, there was always going to be drama. But Harry was going to make sure no one would go near Carter.

The pair arrived at school gates and Harry squeezed Carter’s hand tighter while she gazed up at him, cracking a small smile as the strolled into the school. Harry could hear the whispers of just about everyone in school, but it didn’t seem to bother him. Carter waved at some gawking people, who glared and scowled in return.

The day went by very slowly for Harry. In the morning he had to take Carter to the principal’s office. Harry hated going to the principal’s office, as it was usually a sign that he was going to be suspended, which happened multiple times. But today, the principal seemed to be full of nothing but praise for Harry, telling him how brave he was. They went through everything and the principal decided it would be best if Harry stayed with Carter for classes.

At lunch time, Tom and his buddies jeered Harry. But when they tried to hit him, Carter stepped in and slapped Tom in the face, unaware of the consequences. Tom lunged for her but Harry kept him back and punched him in the face. They soon left them alone after that.

Now, the school bell had just rang, signalling that the school day had ended, so Carter and Harry were getting ready to go home. “I’m just going to the bathroom Carter, wait here.” Harry said. Carter nodded as Harry opened her locker for her. He ran off and went to the bathroom. Carter took some books out of her locker, not knowing which ones she needed for homework.

“Well bitch.” A voice pierced in Carter’s ear. Carter turned around to be met by Lucy, but of course, she didn’t know that. “Hi, I’m Carter. What’s your name?” Carter smiled warmly at the tarty figure stood before her. “Oh as if you don’t know whore.” Lucy spat. “But I don’t, today’s my first day.” Carter told Lucy truthfully.

“DON’T PLAY DUMB WITH ME BITCH!” Lucy screamed, grabbing Carter by the hair and flinging her to the lockers across the room.

Carter’s body collided loudly with the lockers and she fell to the floor. People from the corridors gathered around, some cheering Lucy on, and some telling her to stop. Lucy pulled Carter up and slammed her against the lockers once more, kicking her into the gut and slapping her multiple times.

Carter shrieked in pain as Lucy drew blood from her head. “Still wanna play dumb?” Lucy cackled. “I’m not playing dead! I don’t know who you are!” Carter replied with tears in her eyes. “I guess I’m going to have to make you remember then.” Lucy smirked, kicking Carter’s temple before beating her again.

Harry scooted out of the bathrooms and waltzed and waltzed to where he had left Carter. Noticing that she was no longer there, he sighed heavily. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a gang of people across from him. Curious to know what was so fascinating, he made his way through the crowd and there saw Lucy beating up Carter.

“LUCY GET THE FUCK OFF HER!” Harry roared, separating the two girls.

“SHE SHOULD BE FUCKING DEAD!” Lucy squealed. “Oh shut the fuck up Lucy!” Harry growled, bending down and aiding to Carter. “Leave her there Harry, that’s what she gets for pretending not to know me!” Lucy told him.

“SHE HAS FUCKING AMNESIA LUCY!”

Everyone in the corridor gasped and fell silent. Lucy’s jaw dropped before she stormed away. Harry picked Carter up in his arms and carried her out of the school, hearing a few sympathetic comments from some of the students.

They soon returned home and Harry lifted Carter onto the counter. He cleaned up her cuts and gave her an ice pack for her bruised ribs, courtesy of Lucy. “Harry, w-who is she?” Carter asked feebly. “A very bad person Carter.” Harry responded. “Does she not like me?” Carter croaked, innocently. “She doesn’t like many people babe.” Harry said. Carter nodded as Harry lifted her off the counter, pulling her into his embrace and kissing her forehead.

She went into the sitting room and sat down, curling up into a ball onto the couch and letting her tears fall freely. Harry followed her and sat down too. Noticing Carter’s tears, he came closer to her, putting her onto his lap and letting her cuddle into his chest as he softly rubbed her back. Her eyes became heavy and he kissed her pouting lips.

Carter was broken, shattered. But Harry was going to do everything in his power to fix her.
