Good Intentions

Draco Malfoy is misunderstood and his attitude is second nature to him. He was raised to believe in blood purity, wealth and power. He’s a confused youth being influenced by his fathers past and current deeds but his best friend (and secret love) brings out the best in him and helps to keep him in line. But what happens when Draco is soon forced to let her go?

8. Glassy Eyes

Arabella  glanced up from the book she had been reading and smiled at Draco as he sat closely beside her on the window ledge. Draco still had not explained the incident at The Three Broomsticks from earlier that morning but she no longer seemed to be worried by that. Draco tried his best to smile back at her, but he just could not bring himself to do it. His eyes became glazed with tears as his eyes met her's and he took a deep breath. He had to do it. Although Draco hadn't actually been told that he must do what he was about to do, he felt he had too - for Arabella's sake, to keep her safe. She was still pure, still innocent and he did not want to her to be a part of The Dark Lord's wicked schemes any more than she already had to. Draco was quickly pulled out of his thoughts by Arabella, as she placed her hand on top of his. Draco's hear skipped a beat but he somewhow managed to ignore it.

"Draco, I know you say there is nothing wrong, but I know you are lying. I can see it in your eyes." She told him softly, tracing her thumb back and forth of his hand soothingly. "If you will not tell me what it is, please tell me what I can do to make this easier for you." She pleaded, leaning a little closer towards him and tucking some loose blond hair behind her ear.

"There is nothing you can do." Draco told her truthfully. "I just.." He started before sighing and pulling his hand out from underneath Arabella's. He couldn't do it, he just could not bring himself to hurt her. Draco buried his face in his hands and tried not to let the tears slip from his eyes as he felt Arabella wrap an arm around his waist and pull him into her for a hug.

"Is it your father?" Arabella asked. Draco did not bother to answer, but just shook his head. He did not want to think of his father as Lucius was the reason he was in this mess in the first place. Arabella was silent for a moment before chewing her bottom lip and leaning in closer, her lips brushing against Draco's ear. "Has The Dark Lord been in contact? Has he given you a task?" She whispered. Draco's body tensed but he shook his head. He knew that Arabella would not understand. Arabella sighed as she realised she was not getting anywhere. "Draco, you've been acting oddly for weeks. I want to help you but you need to tell me what is going on!" Arabella begged. Draco lifted his head from his hands angrily and stood up, ripping himself from Arabella's loving grip.

"Why do you assume that you can help me? No one can help me, don't you understand?!" Draco snapped. He was not angry with her, but he knew it was now or never, he had to do this. No matter how much it may hurt. "There is nothing wrong with me. You don't want to help me, you're just being nosey, like always!" Draco added, raising his voice as he looked down at her. Arabella looked hurt for a moment but then sighed, standing opposite him.

"You're right, Draco. I'm sorry if you feel I'm being nosey, I'm not trying to be. I'm just worried about you, that's all." She confessed, reaching her hand out for Draco's. Draco pulled his hand away quickly, hating how hard she was making this.

"You don't have to be worried about me! I can take care of myself. I'm not a child, Arabella!" Draco shouted. Arabella knotted her eyebrows together in confusion, not understanding Draco's sudden outburst.

"I know you're not. I just -" Arabella tried, taking a step towards Draco only for him to take a step further away. Arabella stopped what she was saying as Draco did this and her eyes flashed with hurt, but she did not give up. "Draco, I'm sorry. I just want to help." She said, her voice cracking a little as she realised just how angry and upset Draco was with her. Draco scoffed.

"I don't need your help! I'm fine alone. I'm better off without you sticking your nose into my business all the time. Just leave me alone!" Draco shouted, his heart aching as Arabella's beautiful, grey eyes turned glassy with tears. Her eyes caught Draco's and she simply shook her head before pushing past him and walking quickly down the corridor and out of sight. Draco's heart burned as he watched her walk away but it was for the best. He had done her a favor, she just did not know it yet. Draco rubbed his own eyes as they had become watery and sighed as noticed Arabella had left her book. Draco picked it up and tucked it under his arm before walking off down the corridor in the opposite direction in which Arabella had gone.
