Behind The Scenes

Em is that foster kid that moves from house to house. She's labeled as one of those troubled teens and moves around a lot. But when she moves to a new school and falls in love with Simon, she might just have to leave him behind.

2. The Phantom

The final bell rang and I walked out of class. I put my ear-buds in and walked down the hall to my locket. I opened it up and hung my backpack up and shut it. I made my way to the far end of the school and towards the dressing hall. It was called the dressing hall because during plays, the hall would be closed off and the actors would strip off in the hall as they ran to the dressing room. I walked down the hall and opened up the stage door where some guys were already sitting on the set. I sat down on some stairs that were being used for the set. I pulled out my phone and saw a text from Ms Nash. I rolled my eyes and deleted the message without even reading it. I would probably hear about it later anyways.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw several boys stand up and walk over to me. The introduced themselves. Cody had long dirty blonde hair and dark brown eyes. Ken was shorter with short brown hair that he spiked up. Seth had dark brown hair that was almost black with darker brown eyes. And Wilson had long brown hair that flopped over his eyes. I said hi to them as I pulled my ear-buds out so I could hear them.

"So since your new here, you have to prove that you have what it takes to be a techie," Cody said. I nodded.

"Do you believe in ghosts and demons?" Seth asked. I shrugged.

"Ive never really had any encounters with them before so I'm not sure if I really believe. But I guess that there could be paranormal things that I haven't encountered," I said.

"Then hopefully you aren't scared of them," Ken said as the group of boys started laughing.

"Now, since your new, you have to go up on the catwalk and spend at least 10 minutes up there. No coming down." Cody said.

"10 minutes? That doesn't seem that long? Whats the catch?" I asked.

"The phantom," Wilson said. I looked at him hoping that he would elaborate but he didn't. "Hey Simon, why don't you take her up to the catwalk?"

Simon came walking in and nodded as Wilson addressed him. I stood up and walked over to Simon who led me out to the dressing hall. Several of the actors were out in the hall getting dressed in their wacky costumes for the Master of the House scene. We walked out into the main hall and walked down a few feet to were a large metal door was. Simon opened it up for me and I walked in and walked up the stairs that were inside. As I ascended the stairs I felt a very heavy weight on me. I glanced back at Simon who looked a bit pale.

"Whats that feeling?" I asked as I got to the top of the stairs where there were two closed doors. One was a large metal door and the other was a very small wooden door that was about 6 feet off the ground. A small ladder rested up against the wall and Simon moved the ladder so it was underneath the small wooden door.

"That would be the Phantom," Simon said.

"I thought they were kidding about that?" I laughed but Simon shook his head.

"No, the Phantom is the auditorium ghost. He is mostly felt and seen on the catwalk. We occasionally see him in the tech-booth and back-stage. He isn't exactly fond of new people, that's why whenever we get a new techie they have to go up to the catwalk. All you have to do is survive 10 minutes with the Phantom," Simon said as he climbed up and unlocked the door. He held it open for me as I climbed up and through the door. "It's not very big so just stay low," Simon said as he flipped on a light switch that reveled a very tiny hallway where the ceiling was only about 4 feet high. I crawled after Simon who led the way. We then got to another metal door on the ground. Simon opened it up and reveled a ladder that led down to the catwalk. He handed me a flashlight. "This is where I leave you. Good luck Em," Simon said. "Just remember that down below we are all watching you, so act tough," I laughed a bit as I climbed down onto the catwalk and Simon shut the door.

"OK! Your time starts now!" I heard Cody yell up.

I looked down below me and saw about 15 boys all sitting on the stage looking up at me. I switched on the flashlight and looked around the very rickety looking platform. The catwalk was made out of metal and hung from the ceiling by large robes. As I started to walk the platform started to sway. I gripped the railing as I maneuvered past the large lights. I didn't exactly know what to do so I just walked from one way of the catwalk and stopped. 'This is so easy.' I said to myself right as my flashlight turned off. I tried to flick it back on but it wouldn't work. I looked down and saw the boys still looking up at me. I gripped onto the cold railing and started to make my way back to the ladder.

I stopped when I saw a large black shadow  It looked like a cloaked figure. I started to scream but thought that it was one of the boys playing a trick on me. I looked down and counted the boys. Still 15. No one was missing. I heard a low moaning/growling noise escape from the shadow. I heard some boys swear and others start laughing. I didn't know what to do.

I looked at the figure and then had a stupid idea. I started walking towards the shadow and then just walked through it. I felt as if someone had just punched me as I walked through the cold moist mass of the Phantom. Then I heard cheering from down below. I looked and saw Simon just as he was leaving the stage. I hoped he was coming to get me. After a few minutes I heard the metal door above me open and saw Simon looking down at me.

"Good job Em, you stood up to the Phantom, literary." Simon laughed as I crawled up the ladder and back down the small hallway.
