Behind The Scenes

Em is that foster kid that moves from house to house. She's labeled as one of those troubled teens and moves around a lot. But when she moves to a new school and falls in love with Simon, she might just have to leave him behind.

1. Techies

This was something that I had always wanted to do; tech a play. I walked back-stage to where Mr Smith and the rest of the techies were. The techies were the people that worked behind the scenes of plays. The did the set, the lights, sound. Pretty much everything but act. Techies would never be caught dead on camera or on stage. It was in the techie bible. Literary  When I signed up for the class I was handed a binder with all the techie rules which they called the Techie Bible. Most of the rules were just really random stuff that they say a lot or drink like Mountain Dew Voltage or Kickstart. Those were considered techie drinks.

I walked up to where the small group of techies were. They were all guys, I was going to be the only girl. As I stopped in the back of the group, a few of the guys turned around and smiled at me. I smiled back but didn't pay any attention to them. Mr Smith was talking about how the techies wouldn't really be doing anything for the new play Les Miserables except for doing the lights and sound, which I wasn't doing. I was going to be backstage. I would be in charge of moving the props and things, but the set was a still-set, and didn't need to be moved or changed. I would just sit back and relax.

Mr Smith spotted me at the back of the group and instructed me to come introduce myself. That was another thing techies didn't normally do; stand in front of groups. I slowly moved up, my feet felt like they were made out of cement. Mr Smith put an arm on my shoulder and told everyone to make me feel welcome and then dismissed the group. Everyone began walking away but one boy stayed behind. He was tall, way taller than me. He had a beanie on and I couldn't see what his hair looked like. He wore a black jacket with a dark blue shirt underneath and black skinny jeans. He also had these really deep deep blue eyes. He looked down at me and smiled.

"Don't worry about them, they aren't used to having a girl around here. They'll warm up to you eventually. And by the end of the play, you'll be best friends with all of them" the boys said. "I'm Simon by the way,"

"I'm Em." I said as we started walking out the back doors to the parking lot.

"So your new here?" Simon asked as we started walking across the street to Wal-Mart.

"Yea, I just moved here from California," I said as Simon pressed the crosswalk button.

"And were you a techie before you moved here?"

"No, my friends back at California were all techies. I never was. I kept wanting to sign up for it but thought I was too far behind to be one. When I moved here I thought that it was a chance to start over."

"Well its a lot of fun. You learn some very good skills like how to build thing, play poker, and when we are really bored we pretend to do shots with Voltage." I laughed as we walked into Wal-Mart. "It really is fun though. You get to make a lot of friends,"

I shrugged a bit. "I don't really think they like me," I said as I grabbed a red can of Kickstart. "Guys usually don't like me very much," Simon grabbed a bottle of Voltage and we walked over to the cash register to pay.

"Let me pay for your drink," Simon said as he grabbed my can. "And the other techies will warm up to you, trust me," Simon said as he handed the lady three dollars.

"Thanks, but how do you know?" I asked as I grabbed by can of Kickstart from him and took a sip.

"Because I like you so far..."
