Hour Zero

This is my first Movella, so I'm kind of excited to see how it goes. This is a story that follows Samuel Mason, who is a Lieutenant in the military, and his team on a Snatch and Grab mission. Before they can even land, their helicopter (which is more of a very large troop transport) gets shot down and they become trapped. Deep in enemy territory, the team struggles to finish the mission and escape alive.

1. The Briefing

I wake up in my loft, it's only four o'clock in the morning. Military life was tough, especially when you were born and raised as a soldier. Both my parents were high ranking officers, but they both died around my ninth birthday after an I.E.D went off taking out their jeep...no one survived the explosion. The war has been going on for years before I was born, and at this rate I doubt it will ever end. So many lost every day, and there's little we can do about it but send more men and women willing to die for their country to their inevitable deaths.

It's been a long time since my parents death. I'm nineteen now, and a member of the elite squad called Epsilon. We are led by Major Robert Johnson, who truth be told can be pretty ruthless to the team. A rookie wanted to join the team a while back and filed out the needed paperwork, even ended up getting a face to face meeting with the Major. Supposedly, the kid said he could take more pain than anyone...so the Major made him crawl through a mud trench lined with barbed wire. The kid resigned the next day, needless to say.

I needed to get ready, word has it we are getting a new mission, some sort of Snatch and Grab. Nothing new there, we've done countless missions like it. Go in, get the target package, get out before we're discovered. I mosey my way into the bathroom and take a quick shower, then get into uniform and head out to the briefing room. There, the team was already waiting for me. "You're late again Lieutenant! Do you not realize that if I die you are commanding officer of this unit!", there it was...late again, go figure the Major would be livid with me, "If you are late again I will personally kick you off this team boy! I'd rather someone with more leadership skills like Lieutenant Manefield be the successor to this unit anyway!" Of course, what he said was true. I'm not much a leader, but Ashley definitely was. Hard to believe I out ranked her, granted only by half a rank...I'm first Lieutenant and she's a second. I went into attention and shouted out with that cliche "Sir no, sir! Won't happen again sir!" yeah everyone does it, but hey whatever works.

"Yeah, yeah, that's what you said last time Mason...at ease." After being on the guys team for a little under a year, you tend to learn how to calm him down no matter how many times he hears the same thing. Ashley walked up to me, like every other time we salute to each other. "Hey Sam, you exited?" She always asked me this, and after we did this a few times the answer was always the same, "Not really, I mean we've done this so many times before. Nothing new, get in get out." Just then General Riley walked in, immediately we all went to attention without hesitation. "At ease, Epsilon...now sit down." We all relax and take a seat, waiting for the General's briefing on our mission.

"As you all know the enemy has never been known for having a good intelligence agency, however they somehow have gotten a hold of detailed records on every operative we have. Full profiles, mission history, on going missions, everything up to twenty-four hours ago. Your mission is simple: Go in and destroy all of their records on us. Every last bit...we can't afford a failure on this mission, you must succeed at any costs. Our entire military's integrity is resting on the success of this mission. You will be given a more detailed brief just before you leave, now load out Epsilon, we're all counting on you!" We stand and salute, waiting for the General to leave the room. Once he exits we all follow, heading to the armory. This wasn't quite like our other missions under this category, I could already tell that this one was...different.
