Hour Zero

This is my first Movella, so I'm kind of excited to see how it goes. This is a story that follows Samuel Mason, who is a Lieutenant in the military, and his team on a Snatch and Grab mission. Before they can even land, their helicopter (which is more of a very large troop transport) gets shot down and they become trapped. Deep in enemy territory, the team struggles to finish the mission and escape alive.

7. No Man Left Behind

Wilks lifts Reyes and rests him against the tree, keeping him sitting down. He has a gash on his forehead, his fibula is broken in his right leg, and his right arm is cut up by what was likely the aftermath of a fight. I walk up to Reyes and lift his chin with the forefinger, and try to speak to him lightly, “Hey, Reyes, we’re bringing you back with us, to the cave I mean, okay? But we can’t move you in this condition, we have to fix up what we can here or else we’d risk putting you into a coma from shock in moving you,” I look to Wilks and bark orders “Grab some vines and a few sturdy sticks, we’re going to improvise a splint. Oh, and bring a smaller one to, small enough to fit in his mouth so he can bite on it but strong enough that it won’t shatter when he does,” I look back to Reyes, as Wilks runs off to look for the supplies “What in gods name happened, how come we didn’t hear anything?”

The Staff Sergeants speech was jumbled and slurred, just barely understandable. He has clearly lost quite a bit of blood, the fact he’s even conscious let along alive is nothing short of a miracle “Th-there was....a small scouting party. Three members, I think, must’ve seen me....The knocked me out and dragged me away, don’t know how long I was out for. When I finally came to, I was against a tree and no one was around. The tree was rough so I managed to rip the rope against the bark, but one of the men came back. I drew my knife and we got in a fight, ended up slitting his throat, but as you can see he put his toll on me too. After I killed him I heard the howl of a wolf so I ran off, wasn’t long before the two others found me. I kept running, them chasing me, but I tripped and rolled down a hill. Leg smashed in to a rock and it broke, have so much adrenaline pumping through me I barely feel a thing though...lucky break. So, I seemed to lose them and began limping trying to find the way back, but couldn’t keep going and just fell over here.”

Wilks returns with the requested materials, and Reyes coughs up blood. I wipe away the blood with my shirt and take the smaller stick from Wilks, “I’m gonna put this in your mouth, and you need to bite down. There may be adrenaline pumping in you, but this will still hurt like hell. I’m gonna tell you exactly what we’re gonna do: I am going to force your bone back into place and hold it there, while Wilks secures the makeshift splint to keep it in place when I let go. Then we’re gonna both act like a crutch for you and walk back to the cave, all three of us, understand?” He tries to speak but I put the stick in his mouth before he gets out a full syllable, “Alright, lets get this done” I look to Wilks, and we begin the emergency field operation.

I force my palm in to the shattered fibula in Reyes’s leg, putting it back into place though rather painfully. The Staff Sergeant bites into the stick with a series of loud grunts, and Wilks begins to apply the splint made of sticks and vines. Reyes nearly passes out from the pain, but I slap him lightly to keep him awake. The splint is done being applied, and I remove the thick stick from his mouth, which is nearly bitten in half. Good thing he has adrenaline in him, cause if it hurt that bad with adrenaline I can’t imagine the pain that he would have undergone normally. We wait a moment until he catches his breath, and we pick him up with one of his arms over each of our shoulders.

We walk back to the cave, arriving just in time. Ashley was just about to walk out, the unit following behind her, just as she said she would if we didn’t arrive in time. She seemed upset at first, since Reyes looked dead, but then he looked up and smiled gently. Everyone rushed us a welcomed us back, and we went back in to the cave to secure Reyes’s condition. Our mission may need to be completed as soon as possible, but comrades always come first....
