Hour Zero

This is my first Movella, so I'm kind of excited to see how it goes. This is a story that follows Samuel Mason, who is a Lieutenant in the military, and his team on a Snatch and Grab mission. Before they can even land, their helicopter (which is more of a very large troop transport) gets shot down and they become trapped. Deep in enemy territory, the team struggles to finish the mission and escape alive.

6. Lost and Found

We looked around the area where we found his tags, and we found something. There was what appeared to be a human body through the brush, but it was being tugged on my something. We heard a low growling, and moved the brush to see a large wolf eating a male human. It immediately stared in to our eyes and lowered itself, determined to protect its meal from us, but Wilks grabbed a large branch and chucked it at the wolf making it run off. I flipped over the body but didn’t recognize the man, “This isn’t Reyes, it’s someone else. Maybe the man who attacked him, look at the knife wounds, they are consistent with the Staff Sergeants blade.”

I point of the wounds I mentioned, lacerations and stab marks all over the man. “These injuries were no doubt caused in a fight with Reyes, and the cut across his throat must be what killed him since the other wounds aren’t fatal, then the smell of all the blood attracted the wolf to the body. Hopefully this is an omega, a rogue with no pack.”

“It most likely is sir, if it had a pack they would have been here too. Not to mention the Alpha always feeds first in a pack, and an Alpha wouldn’t have ran like that because of some stick.”

“I suppose you’re right Sergeant...well I guess we must look on the bright side, judging by this mans injuries most of the blood is his, not the Staff Sergeants, so he shouldn’t be bleeding out. He still might be alive...”

“We can only hope sir,” Wilks walks over to the dead mans body as I walk away and closes the mans eyes, “personally I think he’s alive. If anyone could find him, it’s you.”

I smile at his comment for a moment, knew he was saying that because it’s obvious I’m blaming myself for this, obvious that I don’t want to be a leader not yet. As we searched for Wilks, trying to find more signs of him, our hope slowly began to fade that he was going to be alive, our hope that we would even find him to begin with nearly disappeared. For nearly two hours we looked, finding small clues here and there but nothing definitive as to his status or location. The sun was going to be up soon, we had to start heading back to the rest of the unit or get left behind being presumed K.I.A.

On our way back to the cave we are set up in, both Wilks and I are feeling low. We would keep looking, if we had the time, but we just don’t, we have to go. The sun was rising and judging by its position we only have another half an hour or so to get back, but Wilks was restless and we had to take a quick breather against a tree. While he rested, a strange look came over his face and he spoke low, “Sir...I think I hear something...it sounds like a man groaning...” My eyes widen and I begin to search the brush surrounding us, and Wilks quickly looks behind the tree he is leaning on. There, laying down and pale looking, was Staff Sergeant Adam Reyes, living but looking like death itself.
