7. Chapter Six: Leo

CHELSEA NEXT EMERGED from the house on Wednesday. This time she did stop at the waterfront. I sat outside a café that overlooked the water and had a beer, watching Chelsea as she sat with her toes dipped into lake. Her shoes were beside her and she was engrossed in a book. Chelsea’s wild hair was loose and blowing in a gentle breeze.

I was about to go and talk to her when an elderly bearded man approached her. He spoke but Chelsea mustn’t have heard because she didn’t react. The man touched her shoulder and Chelsea jumped. She smiled when she saw who it was and they talked for a while. Tapping my fingers impatiently on the table, I waited for the man to leave.

“Finally,” I muttered, draining my beer when the man walked away.

Standing up, I took a step towards Chelsea. She grabbed her shoes and slid them on before getting to her feet. I swore under my breath. I just could not catch a break. I tried to match Chelsea’s pace but she was too fast. She disappeared into her house and I took up my usual position behind the hedge opposite.

I didn’t see Chelsea again on Wednesday but there was a lot of noise coming from the house in the evening. She didn’t leave Thursday or Friday. In fact no one left the house. When Chelsea was still nowhere to be seen on Saturday I knew that I was going to have to change my plan of accidentally bumping into Chelsea again to something else.

I ended up calling Penny Greene.

“Hi, Penny, it’s Leo.”

“Oh, what a pleasure to hear from you,” she purred. “What can I do for you?”

“I was wondering if you could give me directions for the hall that the Gatherings are held in,” I replied, leaning back in the sofa.

“Of course.” Penny rattled off the time and address for the Gathering and said that she hoped to see me soon.

Hanging up, I sighed and put my phone on the table, spinning it around with a finger. Things weren’t going as well as I had hoped; finding out that Chelsea was my soul mate and now I was struggling to even talk to her. I shook my head reminding myself why I was here. I was doing it for my parents, to avenge them. It didn’t matter how long it took.

My thoughts were interrupted when my phone vibrated. A name flashed on the screen. Lucy. Swearing, I pressed the ‘reject’ option and walked over to the window.

Tomorrow I would start forcing my way into Chelsea’s life. I smirked. I hoped she was ready.
