Chapter 1

I walked into the street path, the Christmas lights flickering above, changing colour every second. My footprints were leaving a trail as I walked. I politely waved to the old man next to me. He smiled, showing a missing tooth.

I saw a small food shop to my right, so I quickly crossed the street, avoiding the cars and walked inside, instantly feeling warmer.

A woman in her 40’s was at the counter, listening to the Christmas carols, singing the words silently. She looked up as soon as she heard the noise of the door closing, and smiled slightly. I smiled weakly back.

I looked through the aisle, trying to find what I wanted.

Rainbow popcorn.

I slowly walked up to the counter, rummaging through my pocket to find some spare coins.

I put my popcorn on the counter, the money coming straight after it.

“Oh no, this one is on the house.”She said.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“100%.” She replied.

“Thank you.” I smiled slightly. She smiled in response.

“Goodbye.” I murmured, before leaving the shop.

I slowly walked down the street, slowly, watching as my feet sunk into the snow, making a crunching noise. Not being able to resist, I opened the packet of popcorn, and started eating them slowly, one by one.

I sat down on a nearby bench, taking out my bag and putting the popcorn in there so I won’t eat them. I took my water bottle in my hands, shivering at the coldness, questioning myself mentally why I put ice in it. I took the lid off, taking a small sip, feeling the coldness make its way down my throat.

I took my popcorn out of my bag, feeling my stomach ache more as each second passed. I eagerly took some, stuffing them in my mouth. Smiling at the taste, I ate the rest of the bag, feeling almost full by the end of it.

I got up shivering automatically as the wind lightly pushed my jacket open. I quickly buttoned it up.

I walked up to the bin, chucking the wrapper in there.

Closing my eyes, I left for the church.

I waited outside, seeing lots of familiar faces.

“Rose.” A voice said behind me. I jumped and turned around.

“Georgia!” I said, running up and giving her a tight hug.

“Are you okay?” She asked. “Sorry, stupid question... Pretend I didn’t say anything.” She said, shaking her head.

“It’s okay.” I said.

Georgia rubbed my back soothingly.

“Come inside, there’s a heater.” She said, pulling my frozen hands.

I followed her inside the church.

I didn’t pay attention to the decoration, not caring. My eyes landed on the two coffins at the front of the church. They were big, black with lots of flowers out in patterns on top. I gulped.

I heard footsteps behind me, then the sound of two doors closing.

I walked slowly, passing each row of seats. Every now and then I would get a look full of pity and sadness.

Georgia dragged me to the first row, sitting herself and me in the last empty seats.

I pulled my knees up to my chest, hugging myself.

“You can leave if you want.” Georgia said. “It’s not too late, everyone will understand.”

“No, I can do this.” I replied, plastering a fake smile on my face. She nodded.

Everybody went quiet as the Vicar started talking. I didn’t pay attention; I just looked at the coffins, feeling tears form. I tried to blink them away, which ended in them falling out. I quickly wiped them off, then putting my legs down.

I glanced at Georgia, to see she was looking at me with a worried look.

“...Rose here has prepared a speech, Rose? Where are you?” I heard the man’s voice say. I raised my hand shakily. “Okay, come on up now.” He said.

I stood up, walking to the front while grabbing the crumpled up paper in my pocket.

“Uh... Hi. I’m Rose, if you don’t know, my parents daughter...” I started reading my speech.

“Okay, let’s go.” I said to Georgia.

“Okay.” She replied.

We started walking in silence until Georgia broke it.

“That man is coming towards us.” Georgia said. I looked up, seeing a bald man who looked about 40. I was about to talk but the man beat me to it.

“Have you guys seen any odd things happening recently?” He asked.

“No? Why would we?” Georgia asked.

“Don’t worry, it’s nothing for you to worry about... Goodbye.” He replied.

We both waved slightly. Georgia shrugged and we both continued walking.

I accidently bumped into a curly-haired man.

“Sorry.” I mumbled.

“It’s all good.” He replied in a husky tone, smiling with his head tilted to the side.
