Jamie McLaren lost her entire family in the shooting last year—even her twin brother. Nobody knows why the McLarens were targeted, or why Jamie is the only one who survived, but they all think she’s next.
Niall Horan is worried about Jamie. Ever since her brother—his best mate—passed away, she’s been avoiding him and getting herself into all sorts of trouble. Niall blames the crowd she’s been hanging around, but Jamie insists that she isn’t good enough for anything better.
All Niall wants to do is protect Jamie and maybe even make her laugh again, but all Jamie seems to want to do is avoid Niall as much as possible.

8. Ch.8

Jamie didn't like the atmosphere in the club...she never did. At least, not while she was sober enough to still notice it. The music was loud, the air was smoky, and Seamus never cared enough to keep the flirty drunks away from Jamie.

Her phone buzzed. Looking down, she saw that Liam was trying to call her. Deciding that she was sober enough to have a civil conversation, Jamie decided to take the call. She was still feeling bad about what happened earlier, backstage.

"I'll be back! I've gotta take this!" she shouted over the music at Seamus. He looked up from across the bar where he was sitting with some friends and gave her a confused look.

"What the hell?" he mouthed. Jamie shook her head and left. She stepped out into the damp summer air and walked around to the side of the building.

"Hi, Liam." she answered, trying to sound cheery.

"Jamie!" he sounded surprised. "Uh...what're you up to?"

  "I'm just...out."

"Can I talk to Niall?" she ignored his last question.

"Sure thing, he's right here." there was a lot of noise as the phone was dropped, kicked around, and finally handed to Niall.

"Niall!" she tried not to sound excited. "Listen, I'm sorry about today. It wasn't fair of me to--"

"Jamie, please don't worry about it." his voice was a mix of sad and forgiving. "You've been through so much. I understand." Jamie looked up at the sky and gulped. She nodded, then remembered that Niall couldn't see her and managed to choke out a, "Thank you."

The club door opened and the sound of deafening music and laughter spilled out into the dark. Jamie mentally cursed and tried to think of something to say that would quickly end the conversation, but Niall was quicker.

"What's that?" he asked sharply. "Jamie, who are you with? Where are you?"

"Uhhh, Niall I'm gonna have to--"

"There you are, baby." Seamus slurred. She jumped and without even thinking, hung up on Niall.

"I was coming right back, Seamus." Jamie said crossly.

"C'mon inside, babe. I ordered you a drink." he slung his arms around her waist. Jamie shook her head.

"I--I don't really want to." she took a step back and hit the brick wall behind her. "I just wanna--can you--I'm just going to get a ride home." she unlocked her phone. In the three seconds that her face was focused on the screen, Seamus moved forward and slammed both hands onto the brick wall on either side of Jamie.

"Only if I can come with you." he smiled and Jamie shuddered.

"No. I just want to go home and sleep." she shook her head. Seamus moved in even closer and dipped his head down to kiss her neck. Jamie gasped.

"No!" she growled and ducked under his arms, away from the wall. Seamus laughed softly.

"I know what's going on." he murmured softly. "That Niall kid is back in town." Jamie's eyes widened before she whirled around to face him. "Yeah, I know." Seamus laughed again. "That was him just now wasn't it? On the phone?" Jamie started to move away.

"Just let me go home. Please." she begged and started to move faster. Seamus grabbed her arm and with one motion, threw her back against the wall. Jamie squeezed her eyes shut at the impact.

"Why?" he spat. "Is that what he told you to do?" he took her wrists and pinned them harshly against the wall. Jamie gasped from the pain and struggled to get free, but Seamus was much stronger than her.

"No! He didn't tell me to do anything! Honest! Let me go!" she shouted and squirmed under his grip.

"Shut up!" he bellowed and drew his fist back. Jamie tried to duck, but it was useless. He still had her pinned against the wall with one hand and it was nearly impossible to get away at all. He punched her across the face at least three times before throwing her against the wall again. Jamie's vision blurred as her head hit the wall. She tried to scream, gasp, anything--but the wind had been knocked out of her.

"What's wrong, Jamie? You don't like that?!?" Seamus let go and let her sink to the ground. "Get up!" she could faintly hear him screaming at her before starting to kick her. All Jamie wanted to do was get up and fight back--or run away, but she couldn't. Seamus kicked at her several times, then stopped suddenly. There was another set of footsteps, a new voice. A scuffle soon followed, along with some shouting.

"Jamie? Jamie!" was that Niall? "Jamie, talk to me!"
