Lost

Jamie McLaren lost her entire family in the shooting last year—even her twin brother. Nobody knows why the McLarens were targeted, or why Jamie is the only one who survived, but they all think she’s next.
Niall Horan is worried about Jamie. Ever since her brother—his best mate—passed away, she’s been avoiding him and getting herself into all sorts of trouble. Niall blames the crowd she’s been hanging around, but Jamie insists that she isn’t good enough for anything better.
All Niall wants to do is protect Jamie and maybe even make her laugh again, but all Jamie seems to want to do is avoid Niall as much as possible.

Jamie stayed with the Horan's for another week, and then she was moved across town to live with her newlywed cousin. As much as Sarah and John welcomed her, Jamie couldn't help but feel like she'd barged in on their lives at the most inconvenient of times.

"It's ok, I'll try to spend as much time as possible with you before I leave." Niall assured her. They were outside the McLaren's old home, looking through the windows from behind the yellow crime scene tape, which still fluttered eerily in the breeze. Jamie shook her head.

"Don't worry about it. I know you're busy getting ready for tour." she said lightheartedly. Niall raised an eyebrow and watched as she began to walk around the perimeter of the tape. Jamie turned around.

"What?" she called out and laughed at his expression. Sighing, Niall scowled and walked towards her.

"I--I just worry about you. That's all."

  "You can't."

  "Why not?"

"You don't have time" her eyes laughed at him.

"I always have time for a friend!" he said fiercely. Jamie looked away and pretended to be very interested in the eaves of the house. Something in her face changed as she turned and walked away.

"Jamie. Jamie, wait." Niall ran after her. He caught up and touched her shoulder lightly. "Hey," he whispered. "Talk to me, Jamie."

"I'm talking to you right now." she sassed. Niall sighed in frustration.

  "C'mon, Jamie. Just--"

"Niall." she cut him off. "Not right now, ok?" he was about to argue, but she cut him off again. "Please?"

He opened his mouth to say something, but stopped and looked at her. She was standing in front of him in one of Damian's hoodies which fell almost to her knees. Her hair was damp and clinging to her face from the light summer mist. The way she looked so cold and alone--all Niall wanted to do was wrap her in his arms and somehow convince her that everything was going to turn out alright.

But judging by her tone, Jamie didn't want to be comforted. Not now. Niall decided to let it go. Instead, he walked towards her and put his arms up to pull her hood over her head.

"I'm seeing Seamus tonight." she announced suddenly. Her voice was clear and confident, but she was shivering uncontrollably beneath her hoodie. She dropped her gaze, revealing small beads of mist on her eyelashes. Niall stopped, his hands dropped to her shoulders.

"What did you say?" he felt a rage building up inside of him.

"I--I'm going out with Seamus tonight." her voice wavered slightly.

"What did we tell you about him?!?" Niall's grip on her shoulders tightened. "WHAT did we tell you?!?" he shouted.

"Niall, stop! Get a hold of yourself!" she shouted and wriggled out of his grasp. Niall blinked as he suddenly realized how out of line he'd been getting. Jamie took a step back and gave him a timid, confused look. The mist was turning into rain and came pattering down on Jamie's hood and on the gravel walk beneath their feet. The two stood and looked at each other through the raindrops.

"I'm sorry, Jamie." he said quietly.

  "Okay." she replied.

"You look cold." he said. "Let's get back to your cousin's."
