1. Murders

FADE IN:

EXT. NORTHSHEAM STREET-6.30 PM- ESTABLISHING

The place is crowded. Many people are walking. Many are waiting and many are crossing the street. There are cars too.

CUT TO:

A bus wheels in and stops at the corner of the street. Ten people come out of it and eight or so get into it.

BACK TO SCENE

People are casually walking on the footpath. Honking of cars is echoing in the background.

SMASH CUT TO:

EXT. AVENUE ROAD- 6.31 PM

Houses on this street wear a dull, gloomy, quiet look. An OLD LADY is silently watering her plants. A car is standing in front of a house.

CUT TO:

A worn-out signboard placed at an intersection saying: ‘AVENUE ROAD, LINCOLN PLACE’. The AVENUE ROAD part is hardly visible.

BACK TO SCENE

JULIE, a 22-year old media consultant, quickly walks past the OLD LADY and stops in front of the signboard. She is tall, blond and is dressed in formal clothes. She carries a red handbag.

The phone RINGS. Julie answers the call. She receives a greeting from a SHRILL FEMININE VOICE.

JULIE

Hello? Yes, mother.

VOICE

(OVER PHONE)

Julie, where are you? Matthew and I have been waiting for almost an hour.

As Julie turns to see the signboard:

JULIE

(confused)

I guess I’m in Lincoln Place.

VOICE

(over phone)

Well, quickly get on a bus at the Northsheam, ok?

Julie puts the phone back into her pocket. She turns left and right searching followed by a moaning sound.

JULIE

(alarmed)

Who is it? Answer me!

She turns back to the signboard and eyes the cat sitting under it.

JULIE

(relieved)

Oh! It’s you.

(looks around)

Now, I wonder-where this Northsheam Street is.

The cat licks its paw and walks away.

A man SCREAMS.

JULIE’s face turns red with panic.

CUT TO:

The intersection is jutting into a dark little alley. It is covered by two huge apartments. There is a gate at the end of the alley. At the side is a large, green trash can. There is a stream of blood near it.

BACK TO SCENE

Julie rushes to the trash can. A man, in his 40s, dressed formally, lies behind the can, writhing in pain. His shirt is covered with blood. He appears to be shot in the abdomen.

INTERCUT BETWEEN JULIE AND THE MAN

As Julie kneels beside him:

JULIE

(frightened)

Who are you? Who did this?

MAN

(panting)

Water…water…

Julie quickly takes out a bottle of water from her red bag, opens it and pours it into the man’s mouth. He manages to gulp some, rest fall over his shirt.

MAN

Enough.

As Julie puts the bottle back:

MAN

(CONT’D)

You need to get out of here.

JULIE

No. Tell me. You seemed to be shot in the stomach. Tell me-who are you?

MAN

(stammers)

My name is…Michael Jennings…

JULIE

Let me call the ambulance.

MAN

(loudly)

NO! It’s too late for that. I don’t have much time…

(begins hyperventilating)

It’ll be a waste of time. He went…

JULIE

(eagerly)

Who? Who are you talking about?

Man’s breathing worsens. He closes his eyes.

Julie pats his cheeks.

JULIE

Wake up. C’mon…wake up.

Man’s head falls onto the can lifelessly.

Julie checks his pulse.

JULIE

(shocked)

He’s dead!

We HEAR FOOTSTEPS.

Julie gets back on her feet and turns to the intersection.

CUT TO:

A man is standing beside the signboard. He is mid-20s, dressed in casuals. His clothes are stained with blood. He carries a cellphone in one hand and a gun in the other.

His striking blue eyes are fixed on Julie.

BACK TO SCENE

Julie stares hard at the man. She pretends not to have noticed the gun.

She silently walks past him.

The blue-eyed man watches her go and returns to the deceased.

CUT TO:

Julie paces fast through the empty street. Her eyes are tearful and she attempts to wipe the sweat off her face. She turns to find the man chasing her.

PAN ON:

Julie’s red, frightened face.

FADE OUT.

Julie rushes to him.

JULIE

Listen, you’ve got to help me.

TRAFFIC POLICEMAN

What’s wrong?

As Julie turns back:

JULIE

There’s a man. He is armed and he’s following me. I think he…

TRAFFIC POLICEMAN looks ahead.

TRAFFIC POLICEMAN

You stay right here. I’ll look into it.

Julie breathes a sigh of relief. She walks a little further and stops in front of a chemist’s shop.

The ARMED MAN is not to be seen.

THE TRAFFIC POLICEMAN is still controlling the traffic but he is attempting to help the pedestrians.

ARMED MAN stares hard at JULIE.

JULIE runs faster. She halts in front of a bus. She turns back again to see. She turns front. The bus’ engine is on. JULIE quickly gets into it.
