The Spark

Harry simply feels like the spark is gone. That's exactly what he tells Maria, shattering her heart. But when she shows up back into his life later will he be reminded of the reasons he once loved her? Or will her fiancé stand in his way?

6. It's fine

Maria backed away a little and felt her words caught in her throat. They kinda just stood their awkwardly for a moment until she became able to speak. "Yeah it's me. How are you?" She tried to sound casual but Harry being in from of her for the first time since they broke up made her legs a little weak. She kind of just wanted to fall over and die right there. "Uhm, I could be better. How, how are you here?" Harry looked down at Maria. All he was thinking about was how much more beautiful she has gotten. Of course he always found her beautiful but now he felt like it would hurt to stop looking at her. She looked so ok and fine, not at all what he expected. "Im here to celebrate Eleanor's Birthday. It was a surprise. Louis invited me when we ran Into each other the other day." Maria fidgeted with the present she was holding for Eleanor afraid to meet his gaze. "Well you look great. I can take that present and put it with everyone else's." Maria hesitantly handed the box to Harry. The only thing he noticed was the diamond ring placed upon her hand. His gut wrenched only the slightest big. "Your married?" It came out a little loud and Harry's voice cracked. Maria pulled her hands away quickly and smiled down at the ring. "No, not yet anyway. I'm engaged." Harry felt the reality creep up on him. Of course it was reasonable. Maria as beautiful, talented, and smart. It had also been over a year since they broke up. He hadn't really thought about her being wrapped in the arms of someone else. He tried not too. All he could do was nod and smile. "Well congrats. You two must have quite a spark." Harry said it and then his hand almost flew up to cover his mouth. He had not meant to mention that at all.  Maria felt a little startled when he said it. No matter how much she loved books and writing, The belief in fate, love, and even karma. She had refused to ever believe in the spark. Harry killed that one for her. Maria thought for a second of a nice Comeback. "If there was such a thing we might." Harry looked at her apologetically as soon as there eyes made contact. "I'm still sorry Maria it's just-" She put her hand on his arm and shook her head. "It's fine. Everything is fine Harry." It hurt a little to say it, but she didn't hold grudges. She tried so hard not to but Harry had just pushed her buttons that night. So much she wanted to slit his throat and wait till he died of blood loss. "No it's not  fine. I haven't even checked up on you at all . You could have hurt yourself." Maria rolled her eyes and shook her head. "You didn't kill me Harry. You left. But it's natural. We didn't have a spark." Maria said the word spark like it was a disease. She meant to though. She wasn't mad at him anymore. Couldn't really be now that she had Will. But she wanted him to be mad at himself. Understand the mistakes he's made. "Listen Harry I would love to chit chat some more but I'm here to see Eleanor so excuse me." She turned around with the look of strength and confidence even though it hurt the slightest bit to leave him like that. But it didn't hurt for long because Eleanor hurried over to Maria and engulfed her in a hug. "I can't believe you're here!" And then Maria knew it was a good idea to come after all.
