Skulduggery Pleasant: Death's Dawn

"I grabbed the axe off of one of them, snapping it with a sharp crack, twisting around and driving it into the skull of another. These guys were easy to kill, but we were being overwhelmed. I was almost at Tihana's side again, when I felt the rock hit my head.

"Oh bollocks." Blood trickled down the side of my face, and then I passed out."

54. Chapter 53

Shadow Wolf - Tyrian

Sword is being lazy. I blame him.

Running was an understatement. We literally flew through those trees. Angry werewolves are not fun. I don't care what you think, but they're not. I was almost glad to see the decapitated heads once more. Valkyrie was silent. I was silent. Both of us were silent. But then, wouldn't you be if you'd just been in a life or death situation?

But this was bad. We needed Tihana. Without Tihana, the dead would arise and they would most probably eat us. Funnily enough, I don't want to be eaten.

"So what now?" Her voice was small and quiet.

I looked up, trying not to look too hurt. In truth, I was screaming inside. "We go back."

Valkyrie furrowed her brow. "Without Tihana?"

I pulled away slightly, away from her arms. The regret was clear in my voice. "Yes. Without... without Tihana." She shuffled closer, this time making sure I wouldn't move away. I was glad for her warmth, her kindness and courage. She had lived with the idea of Darquesse lurking within her, and I admired that. Compared to that... what was I?

Everyone else had something they had done, something different and amazing about them. Skulduggery was... Skulduggery. He was the skeleton detective, the man who had beaten death itself. Tihana was the last werewolf. She had struggled through the pile of her dead kind. She had pushed them away and found herself once more. Valkyrie was Darquesse. She had lived with that monster within her for who knows how long. She had the strength to hold her back.

So what was I? I was the childish teenager who was merely deadweight to them all. Tihana had risked her life hundreds of time for me. Valkyrie had come with me and faced Tihana to get her back for me. What had I done? I'd sat in the corner, hugging myself in the cold. I was weak, insignificant, dwarfed by the amazing people around me.

It was even darker when I woke. Muffled noises rose from the forest around me. I was still beside Valkyrie. Even in our sleep, we had kept close to each other. She looked so cute that I was regretful to wake her. Even when I did finally call her back to consciousness, I did it as gently as I could. Or at least, as gently as I normally would.

First I poked her in the back. She gave a quiet groan. Then I poked her again and she turned over. After a few pokes, she opened her eyes slightly.

I glanced around. "There's something here."

"Well we are kinda in a forest. Are you sure it's not just a squirrel?"

"Do squirrels ride horses and have creepy whips?"

"Maybe..." She was quiet, and had turned away from me.

"Valkyrie. Wake up, sleepy head. I think dullahans have found us."

That got her. She blinked suddenly, sitting up. A circle of horsemen had surrounded us. "Oh shit."
