9. Chapter 8 Finding Out

“Okay, take a seat.” We all sat down, my mom and I holding hands. “Right, well, when it happened we were at the camp. Your dad, me, and four other men we just goofing off, but then we heard gunfire outside. We all shot up from our seats and grabbed our guns. That’s when it happened. Your dad ran out of the tent. I called after him, but he didn’t come back. When the rest of us got our gear, we ran out, but it was over. I found your dad with three bullet holes in his chest. He was dead. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t save him.” By this point we all had tears in our eyes. I got up and went to my room. I didn’t want to be around anyone. “Rebekah!” I heard them call after me, but I just shut my door and crawled into my bed. I curled into a ball and cried. I was so tired of crying and I wanted this whole thing to just be a nightmare. After a while, I cried myself asleep; for the second night in a row. I woke up to the loud ringtone of my iPhone. The song was I Loved Her First by Heartland, it was me and my dad’s song. I looked at the screen and saw that Sara was calling me. I pressed answer, and brought the phone up to my ear.

“Hello?” I said, noticing my voice crack from crying.

“Hey Beka.” Sara greeted.

“Hey Sara. What’s up?” I asked.

“Well I texted you like three hours ago, but you didn’t reply, so I called you. Is everything okay?” I looked at the clock and saw that it was already one-thirty.

“Oh, sorry, um, is Dustie with you, I really don’t want to have to say this twice.”

“Yeah, let me get her.”

“Hey Beka!” Dustie called into the phone. “You’re on speaker.”

“Okay, well, I’m sorry I didn’t call you guys, but I’ve been busy.”

“It’s okay, but what do you want to tell us?” Sara asked.

“My dad, he-he’s dead.”

“What?” They both asked, shocked.

“He’s gone. He sacrificed himself to save the rest of his squad. Including Max. There was an attack at the camp; he ran out of his tent without cover, and got shot.”

“Beka, we’re so sorry. He was like our second dad. Are you okay?” Dustie asked.

“Everyone keeps asking that, and the answer’s always the same; I’m as good as I can be in this situation.”

“No it’s okay, I guess I’m just tired of hearing it; but I know it means y’all care.”

“Yes we do.” Sara said. We all giggled.

“Well, only about a week and a half left ‘till y’all get here.” I said, changing the subject.

“I know, we can’t wait.” Sara said.

“You’re going to be at the airport to pick us up right?” Dustie asked.

“Of course, you know I would never leave you to get a cab, we’ll be there when you land.”

“We? Are the boys gonna come too?” Dustie asked.

“No, when I say we, I mean my mom and I. I haven’t even told them you were coming yet.” They both gasped.

“Why not?” Sara asked.

“Because it just hasn’t come up. I’ll tell them when I see them all next. I’m sure Zayn and Liam would love to meet you.”

“Shut up!” They both yelled. I laughed at them. Even now, when I learned my dad had died just two days ago, they could still make me laugh. I heard someone calling the girls faintly in the background. “Well, that’s our cue. Bye Beka.” Sara said.

“Okay, bye guys.” I said. I hung up and flopped back into my bed.

“Beka! Someone’s here for you!” My mom called from downstairs.

“Just a minute!” I called back. I got up and brushed my hair, pulling it into a ponytail. I went downstairs to find Harry sitting in the living room.

“Hey Harry, what’s up?” I asked.

“We’re going out.” He said hugging me.

“Yes, again, now go get ready.”

“No buts, just go.”
