1. I don't believe we've met?

“GET OVER HERE NOW EMILY!” my father shouts from the next room. Reluctantly, I pull myself from my bed and walk to the lounge room. My leg is still in pain from last night when he kicked me. “WHAT?” I asked, a little too rudely, because he kicked me in my bruised stomach. “I’m going a someone’s house this weekend. I’m locking all the doors and windows. You are NOT to leave, do you understand me?” Still wincing in pain, I manage to give him a nod. He walks off with a beer in his hand, and not a care in the world that I’m lying here on the floor, crying.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Emily and I’m 17 years old. I live with my dad Bill in Australia. My big brother Callum moved to London a year ago and he’s a professional actor. I’m a really dancer and someday I hope to move to London to be with my brother and to be a professional dancer. Ever since my mum passed away a year ago, my life has sucked. My brother moved away, my dad became a heavy drinker and I was turning into nobody.

My brother and I were really close and I was devastated to hear that he was leaving. It was only a few weeks after my mother passed away so I was still emotionally unstable. My dad clearly was unstable too, because he would spend every Friday night at the pub with his friends and walked around the house with a beer in his hand. It didn’t bother me too much until he started to come home drunk and hit me for no reason.

For a year now, I’ve been completely alone. Both at home and at school. My small amount of friends stopped talking to me a month after my mum passed, simply because they got bored of me. I now sit alone at lunch under a small tree far from everyone else. In class, I sit at the back corner alone. I guess you could say I’m a good student. I do occasionally doze off in class however. It’s like I live in the shadows.
