"Hey Jeanne. How are you doing?"

She replied in a voice that I could barely make out. I guess she said hi back.

I walked from the coatrack and over to Mrs. Johnson's desk. I layed an apple right next to the newest book she was reading, as I do everyday.

When I sat down at my desk I heard some loud whispering with my name in it. With the effort it took to hiss out the S in my name, I knew it was Cassy. I strained my ears more so I could hear.

"SSSSssssstephanie is like so ugly. She is also such a nerd. I mean, who gets like an A on every test." Cassy hissed

"Like totally. Like such a nerd." I heard one of her psychic friends say.

"And did you see that nerdy Jeanne girl she was hanging out with? They both must be like totally talking about us."

    "Like totally."

This conversation must of been meant for everyone to hear, because of the loud giggling and the loud whispering, I'm sure it wasn't a secret.

I glanced over to Jeanne who was sitting at her desk looking like she was to engrossed in her book to notice the cruel things that Cassy and her friends were saying. I knew that on the inside, Jeanne was trying to fight back tears.

I looked around the room. There was no sign of Mrs. Johnson. She must've been chatting with another teacher at the teacher lounge. I don't know what gave me the courage, but I got up and walked over to where Cassy and her friends were leaning up against the wall.

"Oh look. There's the nerd herself coming over to embarrass herself." Cassy hissed.

No Stephanie, you will NOT chicken out this time.

"You know Cassy, you have such pretty hair."

Cassy looked around, I know this wasn't the reaction she wanted out of me.

"Oh! And your earrings! They are SO beautiful!"

    "Thanks?" Cassy said in confusion.

"I also love your dress. They really bring out the color of your...well lets just say, not the prettiest of skin."

Cassy clasped her hand over her mouth and gasped in disbelief. Cassy didn't think she would have any confrontation between her and I today, she just suspected that she could bully me around and I would follow right in her path. Well, isn't life full of surprises.

"Oh and one more thing. I just wanted to say that I always admired your attitude toward me and the rest of my friends."

I said in a sarcastic way. The rest of the room started to giggle and nod their head in agreement.

Cassy tried to stare right through me with her snake eyes and try to scare me away.

I gave that stare right back.

Mrs. Johnson came in the classroom and clapped her hands together to get our attention.

"Okay class!" she said in her ever so cheerful tone, "We will be finishing up "Maniac Magee" today!"

The rest of the class cheered. I cheered too. But not for Maniac, for my first victory against Cassy.

This fight isn't close to the end, it's just the beginning. I grinned. But at least I knew Cassy's weakness.
