4. Chapter 3

The sun glinted through the window in Peyton's bedroom in the morning, as if nothing ever happened last night. She did remember the figure and her screaming, but since she was now in bed, she figured that someone had brought her back to bed.

With a groan, she managed to actually get out of bed and go downstairs again without seeing any weird people that looked like Justin this time. Christian and Chaz were in the kitchen. When Peyton asked where Ryan was, they only shrugged.

"He wasn't in his room this morning," Christian said.

"Yeah, I never saw him. If he were here, he would've gotten up from the smell of food." Chaz joked.

Though, Peyton wasn't really in the mood for food or jokes. She felt like Ryan was the person who put her back into her bed after she screamed, and he was the only person who would understand what she had seen.

She sighed as she took an unwilling bite out of her pancakes. Suddenly, she felt an odd chill go down her spine and heard a little voice in the back of her head that said: It doesn't matter if Justin's alive or not, you have to kill Colton. Maybe it was her sudden un-interest in her life right now. Or maybe it was the fact that she was going crazy over Justin being dead, she had no idea. But the voice kept nagging at her like a mosquito in the middle of the woods, trying to bite her. Her fork dropped to the floor with a bang. Christian and Chaz looked up from whatever they were doing.

"I...I have to get Colton. Or I'm never going to be sane again." She said. Chaz knitted his eyebrows together with confusion.

"What?"

"I have to kill him, Chaz. I keep imagining that everyone I see is Justin and if I don't get rid of the guy that's responsible for all of that, I'll never be sane again. I'll go crazy."

"But Peyton, why are you thinking about this right now?" He reached out and grabbed her wrist. "You're in no shape to do that by yourself. Not now, not ever."

"Then I'll bring Ryan." She pulled away from him. "I have to, Chaz. I don't want to be a crazy old person. I want to be happy and not live this depressing life that I've been living in for four years now. I have to do something about this." She turned around before he could say anything, but Ryan casually stepped through the kitchen door as she grabbed for the handle. Peyton jumped and Ryan had the biggest frown on his face.

"What's going on?" He asked. Peyton brought her gaze over to Chaz and shook her head. He told Ryan anyways.

"Peyton wants to go out and find Colton all by herself."

"I said I'd bring Ryan!" She protested. Ryan held out his hands, telling them both to stop talking.

"Woah, woah, woah. Why the sudden interest in finding Colton?" He turned to Peyton, who was now on the verge of tears.

"Because I keep thinking that I'm seeing Justin...The shadows and everything. I don't want to go crazy, Ryan. The only way to fix this is to kill the guy who killed my Justin."

Ryan stared at her with a look of pity in his eyes. There was a long moment of silence between them before he spoke. "But Justin's not--I mean...Uh...How do you just know whoever you're seeing is Justin and that killing Colton is the answer to all of your problems?" Ryan started to sweat a little bit from his forehead. He tried to look casual as he leaned up against the counter. Peyton lifted an eyebrow.

"Because, it just makes sense to me. Please, will you come with me?" She pleaded. Ryan looked at Chaz for his answer--out of habit--since Chaz had always been the one in charge of him. All Chaz did was shrug.

"If she just suddenly has her mind set on this, then I don't care. I'll stay here with Christian while you guys are out."

Peyton let out a squeal of excitement. She ran over to Chaz and wrapped her arms around his neck, giving him a big kiss on the cheek as she did so. When she pulled away, he blushed. "Thanks Chaz." She turned to Ryan. "Come on, Ry. We're going on a really long road trip."

She hugged Christian and Chaz one more time. Ryan said his goodbyes, as well, before he shut the door behind them. They piled their suitcases into Justin's old Range Rover. Peyton walked around to the passenger seat and hopped in; Ryan did the same.

"Got everything?" He asked and Peyton nodded.

All of this was so sudden. A week ago she never would have thought of leaving her bed for anything but to go to the bathroom or go to some kind of club to drink away her pain. But she woke up this morning and something inside of her said: You know what? I want to go on a catch-and-kill road trip for a while. I don't know how long, but, it just feels like a good idea.

Thankfully, Ryan had agreed to accompany her on this trip. She needed someone who would be able to take care of her when she broke down or when she got drunk. Somehow, she knew she'd get drunk a lot on this trip.

They had spent hours in Peyton's room, trying to decide where the best place to look for Colton would be. And they both decided that their first stop would be none-other than the great state of California. If Colton wasn't there, they decided that their second stop would be New York. If all hope was lost after that, they'd have to check Stratford. Which Peyton doubted that he'd still be there after the police found out about what he did.

"Sit back and relax, 'cause California's about four days away." Ryan said as he pulled out of the driveway. Peyton gladly obliged to this offer, letting her eyes close, and her mind slip to oblivion.

Peyton dreamed about Justin, again. The dreams about him hadn't stopped during the four years of being separated from him. Sometimes they were nightmares, sometimes they were actually very pleasant.

This one, however, was a nightmare.

She was standing on top of a hill, looking down at the city she once called home: Stratford, Ontario, Canada. All of the buildings were crumbling away, as if she had forgotten what they looked like, and the grass was yellow; the trees and flowers were wilting. Suddenly, she was standing in the living room of Justin's old house.

The furniture was all cut in half--including her favorite leather couch. She could hear someone calling her name, and she immediately dashed towards their room. Justin, She thought. Sure enough, he was perched at the end of his bed, looking out the window that had never been there before.

Peyton tried calling out to him. Her voice wasn't working. She couldn't move, either. She watched as Justin got up from the bed. He was wearing something new, now. Black, leather pants, Black Supras, a black hoodie, and simple black shades covering his eyes.

She wanted to scream again. He looked exactly like the guy she had seen in Christian's living room.

Though, something else odd was going on. Peyton's hand started to lift up until she could see clearly what she was doing. She held Justin's gun, her hand on the trigger, pointed at Justin. A look of terror washed over his features as she pulled the trigger and Justin fell down, yelling 'I love you' over and over again...

Ryan was shaking her awake. She opened her eyes, only regretting ever doing it. The sun burned them, though they seemed to have already been  burning before.

"Peyton, it was only a nightmare, don't worry. We're here, by the way." He said. Peyton scrambled to sit up in her seat.

"We're in California?"

Ryan laughed. "No, we're at McDonalds. I was hungry and I guessed that you were too."

"You're right, I'm starving."

Ryan let go of her shoulder. She flashed a smile at him before turning to look out the window--just in time to see the same hooded figure from her encounter the night before, duck behind the building.
