14. Chapter 13

"Really?" Colton asked as Peyton watched him pour two glasses of wine. When he'd offered it, she'd explained to him that she's never had wine before, and now she was confirming it with the nod of her head.

"Yes, really. I usually stick too beer, or stuff that I have no clue what it is."

Colton smiled and handed her a glass. She sniffed it cautiously, causing Colton to roll his eyes and tell her that he didn't do anything to it--then she took a sip. Surprisingly, it tasted good.

Colton sat down next to her, setting his glass down on the coffee table. Peyton just seemed to notice how nice his house was. She had to admit it was a little strange.

"So I thought," Colton said, breaking her out of her reverie. "that since my work with Justin is done, we could get to know each other a little bit more. I mean, Justin was such a jerk to you sometimes; I saw it with my own eyes. Trust me, Peyton. I would never be a jerk to you."

Peyton frowned. "That's not really true. I mean, you killed Justin and I've been depressed for four years. And during those four years, you could've comforted me in some way or another, but you didn't. Why decide to show up now?"

"I...I don't know." He sighed. "I guess I've been a little busy and maybe somewhat depressed myself, because I couldn't see you anymore. I felt horrible about what I did; to you, mainly. Killing Justin was my goal in the end, but hurting you? That wasn't my goal."

"Hurting Justin was your goal..." Peyton trailed off. "By pairing us together, making him finally love somebody again, and then tearing us apart piece by piece before you finished him off."

"Well when you put it that way--"

Peyton turned to face him. "But since we never officially got together until our last moments, you never got the chance to break him before you killed him. So now that he's gone, you figured that you'd give me some space before you butted in to take me as your own."

Colton stayed silent.

"It hurt, but I guess I'm done dwelling on the same things for four years. You seem like you've changed, Colton."

He smiled again. "Thanks, Peyton. That means something."

"To be honest, I came out here to kill you. But I never actually thought that I'd find you, more or less come to your house and talk with you."

"Hmm," Colton said. "Well, at least you aren't here to kill me anymore."

"True." Peyton giggled causing Colton to smile, yet again. "You're awfully happy right now," She said. "Anything wrong?"

Colton shook his head lightly. "Of course not, what makes you think that?"

"Bad boys usually aren't happy."

"I'm only happy because you're finally here, agreeing to sit there and drink my wine and be inside of my house." He grabbed her hand, intertwining their fingers as he did so. Peyton glanced down in surprise, but she didn't pull away like she should have.

"Are you sure about that? I didn't know I could make someone so troubled, so happy." She said.

"I'm sure."

They studied each other for a moment, both enjoying the comfortable silence between them. It was somewhat reassuring to know that Colton was changing. Then again, she'd have to do something about Justin...

Suddenly, Colton's lips were on hers, and they were kissing. He wasn't as gentle as Justin, but Peyton didn't mind one bit. It was nice for a change. Sadly, it didn't last long.

Peyton pulled away as soon as she heard the front door slam open. Though, she didn't have enough time to untangle her fingers from Colton's--partly because he had a really firm grip, and partly because Justin was already standing in the entryway, staring at them like they were from another planet.

Ryan watched as Justin quickly left the car, and ran up to the house. He wasn't sure if this was the right place, but Justin apparently felt that it was right--because he slammed the front door open. Ryan didn't want to leave him there alone with Colton. Justin insisted that he left, though, so he did.

He headed to the nearest hospital, assuming that's where Samantha would be. Ryan knew that he hadn't seen her in who knows how many years, but he still had feelings for her and he didn't want her to die because of some shit that he got involved in. Even if she did still hate him for what he did.

He parked the car and hopped out, kind of nervous. The lady at the front desk let him up right away, surprisingly enough. When he reached the room, he took a deep breath and walked in.

Samantha was sleeping on her hospital bed. She didn't look as bad as when the paramedics had rolled her out of the burning hotel, but she still had lots of burn marks all over her skin. It made her usually bright red hair look dull. She looked like she hadn't gotten any sleep in a long time, so Ryan felt bad for waking her up when he closed the door.

"Hi," He said awkwardly.

Samantha smiled "Hi." She croaked. "Didn't think I'd ever see you again."

"Can't say the same myself."

"Why is that?"

"Because I thought about you every day after you left. I knew we'd end up in the same room again some time. This isn't the room that I would've preferred though..." Ryan looked around the hospital room.

Samantha laughed lightly. Ryan walked over to the chair by her bed and sat down in it. "At least you're here, I don't have any family out here to visit me. Not that they'd want to."

"I'm sorry." He said.

"For what? You've always known that my family was never fond of me, you don't have to be sorry."

"No, I'm sorry for everything that happened. For not listening to you when I should have, for almost dying on you, for cheating, for everything. For hurting you."

Samantha bit her lip thoughtfully. "It's alright...I mean it's nothing I'm not experiencing now..."

"What do you mean?" Ryan asked. "Is it Colton? Cause I know he did this to you, and I'll kill him for it. We all want to."

"Colton?" She raised an eyebrow.

"The guy that you were with back at the hotel..." Ryan tried to get her to remember but all she did was shake her head.

"I know who you're talking about, but his name isn't Colton. That's Cooper."

"Cooper?" Ryan repeated. "Well I don't know what the heck he told you but his name is Colton, and trust me I'd know because my best friend is like enemies with that guy. Colton shot him. Plus, I thought that you said you didn't know him when you were being rolled out?"

"No," Samantha said like it was a question. "There was another guy, he was really tall and he had jet black hair. I don't know where Cooper was at the time."

"Colton. His name is Colton."

"Colton, whatever." She said.

"But if there was another guy, then why was Colton there, and why were you there with him?" He asked.

"Because," Samantha studied him like he was crazy. "He's my boyfriend."
