The Elephant and The Boat

Chapter 6:

Life continued as normal for the two friends, although there wasn’t a day neither didn’t think about being reunited with their best friend.

Jenni continued with her studies whilst continuing to sing and wait tables in her spare time, which she didn’t seem to have a lot of recently. Her life seemed to consist of studying, studying and more studying which was to be expected as she graduated in a few months time.

She couldn’t believe where those three years had gone, they had gone so quick. She’d met quite a few friends and learnt so much. A part of her was sad that it would be over, but the other part of her was excited to see where her degree took her. She also hoped her Tommy would come back in her life soon too.

Tom went off to Detroit to film Only Lovers Left Alive with Tilda Swinton, playing the role of Adam, a musician vampire who played the guitar. He was excited to learn to play again as he hadn’t played in years. He took lessons at Eton but hadn’t played since.

He was greeted by a few of his fans upon arriving at the airport. It amazed him how they seemed to know where he was at all times, especially as he didn’t tweet his whereabouts often, only his song of the day and the odd tweet about UNICEF.

Seven weeks past between the friends. It was a week until Jenni graduated and Tom had almost finished filming. He finished in Detroit after a month and then went to Cologne for three weeks to finish up. In a few days he would be back in London and he could go and find Jenni.

Two days until graduation. Jenni was freaking out, all of her family were coming down from all over the world to see her graduate and get her degree. She only hoped she could get in contact with her Tommy in the next few days as she really wanted him there, even if he hadn’t been there for her for the past ten years. He was the reason she sang and went to The Institution of Contemporary Music Performance to study Vocals in the first place.

Tom arrived back in London the next day. Luckily there were no paparazzi to pounce on him and demand to know if he was dating anyone or where he was returning from.

He sent a quick tweet to let his fans know he was back in London with a photo of his view from the airport and the song Friday I’m in Love by The Cure before getting in the awaiting car that would take him back to his flat.

He arrived home a few minutes later, placed his bags on the bed and had a quick shower before changing into a clean pair of blue jeans, his grey t shirt, leather jacket and brown cowboy boots. He checked that the business card handed to him by one of the waitresses at Dominic’s engagement party was still in his wallet before placing it in his back jean pocket along with his Iphone and keys before heading out the door to his flat and hailing a cab to take him to the restaurant that was written on the card. He needed to eat and thought where better than the restaurant his Jen worked at.

Jenni wasn’t working as late as she normally would tonight as she graduated tomorrow afternoon. She wasn’t sure how to feel about it, she wanted to graduate but then she’d be back living with her mum come tomorrow evening.

She made her way round the restaurant, taking food and drink orders and serving at the bar. Hopefully the night wouldn’t be too long.

The cab pulled up outside Kettner`s restaurant about half an hour later. Tom thanked and paid the driver before heading into the restaurant. It was pretty busy for a Friday evening, but it was a weekday and quite a popular restaurant so that was to be expected.

Tom walked in to the restaurant and waited to be seated. It was very posh with high ceilings and glass chandeliers, brown walls covered in mirrors and tables set out all around the room with single roses, wine glasses and white table clothes.

Tom thought about going home to change. He felt a bit out of place. A bit. Try a lot. Before he could change his mind and walk out the restaurant a young waiter with light blonde hair dressed in black trousers and shirt came over to him guiding him over to a table set for two to the left of the room. He observed the menu for a while taking in all the delicious food. He suddenly felt very hungry and like he hadn’t eaten for days.

Jenni made her way round the busy restaurant, doing much the same as she had on the boat, serving people drinks, taking peoples orders and bringing out their food. She was glad that her shift was over in a few hours time. She needed to go back to her flat and begin packing everything up to take back to her mums after she’d graduated and make sure everything was ready for tomorrow.

She hadn’t managed to get hold of Tommy which she was sad about. She really hoped she would have been able to. Now, after tomorrow she would go back to her old life, the one she had before she moved to London, the one she had when she grew up with Tom, in the same house that bought it all back for her. Helen hadn’t moved, she said she couldn’t bring herself to, that house held as many memories for her as it did for Jenni. Different ones ofcourse, of her and Jenni`s dad who died before she was born.

She continued to make her rounds serving people their food here and taking orders there.

Tom finally decided on what he wanted to order just as a waitress came over to take his order. She kept her eyes down asking what he wanted.

“I’ll have the Lemon Sole with House Cut Chips and a Jameson Irish Cork please, darling”

She wrote it down and then braved herself to look up at the voice of the man she knew so well. Her Tommy.

“Hello Jen”

“Tommy…wh...What... what are you doing here?”

“I…I was just in the neighbourhood and I enjoyed the food I had on the boat and thought i`d come and check what else the restaurant had to offer. Plus I wanted to see you. ” he smiled

“You had a canapé Tommy” she replied with a chuckle. “Wait…you wanted to see me?”

“Ofcourse I did Jen. I haven’t stopped thinking about you since I saw you again. I wanted to contact you but I didn’t know how and I didn’t know if you would have wanted me to. I came to find you when we docked back in London but Ben pulled me off the boat before I had a chance. I took one of the business cards before I left and told myself that when I got back from filming that I’d come back and see if you were here and you were”

She went to reply but was interrupted by a customer asking for a refill. She smiled at Tom before turning to leave. He grabbed her wrist. She breathed before turning back around.

“Jen”

“Let me go and get your order and refill the customers class and I’ll try and be back on my break ok?” he nodded placing a kiss to her knuckles. She froze as a rush of electricity ran up her arm.

She couldn’t concentrate. She all of a sudden felt nervous knowing that Tom was in the restaurant where she worked, probably watching her ever move. Tom Hiddleston. Her Tommy, her best friend who she hadn’t seen properly in ten years. She’d thought so many times what this moment would be like, seeing him again and asking him to her graduation but now knowing he was here, she had lost all of her nerve.

She tried to keep herself busy as much as she could. She wanted to see him, she did but then she was worried about the conversations they would have and if he would bring up the conversation of the kiss they shared ten years ago. Stop that. Get that thought out of your head right now.

Tom sat and scanned the restaurant. His eyes searching and watching her every move. He hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her since he saw her on the boat two months ago. Her lips on his cheek, the way they lingered like they always used to. His Jen. There was never anyone else but her.

Jenni stalled as much as she could but when Toms food was ready she couldn’t not go and hand him it, she tried but all the other waitresses were preoccupied. She breathed a sigh letting her boss know that she was taking her break before going into the kitchen to making herself a sandwich, grabbing Toms food and brining it over to his table.

He smiled when he saw her make her way over. A smile that reached his eyes. The smile that haunted her dreams, the smile she missed so much. He stood pulling her chair out for her. Ever the gentleman. She smiled letting him tuck her chair in for her before he walked around to the other side of the table.

The two friends sat in silence for a while, enjoying their food. She spoke first. “I haven’t got long; I’ve got to get back to work in ten minutes as I finish soon.”

“Ten minutes, oh god, Jen” the words were out of his mouth before he could even register that she said the exact same thing to him all those years ago when he left her that first time.

She closed her eyes and breathed through her nose. Those three simple words bought back the memories of when he left her. She ignored it and went back to her sandwich. He took one of her hands across the table running his thumb over it. She didn’t look at him.

“Jen, look at me.” she couldn’t bring herself to. Three silly words that could mean anything took her back to one of the worst times of her life.

“Jen please” he rubbed her thumb across her hand. She finally looked up putting her sandwich down excusing herself to the loo.

Nice one Tom what an idiot. You didn’t even think! She’s sensitive. You haven’t seen her properly for ten years and you go and say that when she says she has to be back to work. He got up from his seat and made his way over to the restrooms, he had to see her just incase she didn’t come back to him.

Jenni washed her face and made sure she still looked presentable before making her way back out of the loo. Tom caught her wrist on her way out.

“Tom” she asked him in shock. “What are you doing waiting outside the womens restroom?”

“Erm” he scratched the back of his neck with his hand. “I was waiting for you. I was worried that you weren’t going to come back to the table after what I said. I’m sorry, Jen, I didn’t think.”

“Its fine, Tom. Now, come on, let’s go back to the table and finish our food.” He nodded offering her his arm. She took it and he lead her back to the table.

“So you finish early tonight?”

“Yeah, ive got to go home and pack”

“Pack? Are you moving?”

“Only back home, back in with mum. I graduate tomorrow.”

“Back home as in where we grew up?”

“Yeah.”

“Graduating? Oh my god Jen I’m so proud of you”

She smiled. Now was the time to ask him.

“Will…will you…will you come, Tommy? I…I know you haven’t been in my life for the past ten years but…but you always told me I had a beautiful voice when we were growing up and youre…youre the…youre the reason I took up singing as a career in the first place Tommy… I I know that youre probably busy and that its just a silly graduation and I don’t see why you would want to especially when you have to sit around all day with mum and Ben and my aunties and uncles but Tom, it would mean the world to me if you came” she looked down at her empty plate then. She was babbling.

He put his hand on top of hers on the table lacing his fingers with hers.

Jen look at me” She still didn’t look up.

Tom made his way round to the other side of the table where Jenni was sitting placing his hand under her chin.

“Jen…Jen look at me” she finally looked into the big beautiful eyes of the man she knew so well. Her Tommy. She cupped his cheek with her hand running it over his cheekbone. Oh how she had missed him.

“How can you even think that I wouldn’t want to come and see my best friend graduate Jen? I may not have spoken to you for the past ten years and im so sorry for that I truly am. I don’t expect you to forever forgive me but how...how could you of all people not expect me to want to come and see you graduate and cheer with the rest of your family at how proud I am of you, how proud we all are of you, how you’ve grown into such a beautiful, smart, talented young woman from the little seven year old girl I rescued from the school bullies? It would be my honour Jen. I haven’t got anything planned, but even if I did id cancel and drop everything because you’re more important, Jen. You always have and I shouldn’t have left you like that.”

She pulled him to her as they both stood up, pulling him into a tight embrace.

“You’ve no idea how much that means to me or how much I’ve missed you Tommy Hiddleston”

“Ive missed you too, Jen Otto, more than you will ever know.” she snuggled into his t shirt.

“By the way Tommy, I love what you’re wearing but you’re a little underdressed buddy”

Tom laughed his Ehehehe before replying “Well I was going to go and change but the lovely waiter escorted me to my seat before I could even think about walking out the door” she laughed. How he had missed her laugh.

She sighed. “I need to get back to work. Only a few hours left. Busy day tomorrow”

“Do you want me to stay and walk you home?” she smiled at him being the gentleman. He hadn’t changed one bit.

“You haven’t changed one bit Thomas Hiddleston, always the gentleman.”

Jenni accepted Tom’s offer of him waiting until she had finished her shift to walk her home. He admired his best friend from a far as she continued serving the last few people their drinks and plates of food, including Tom a slice of American cheesecake which he ate in a few bites.

The few hours flew by and before they both knew it Tom was walking her back to her flat. It was a warm evening, mind you it was July. It was a walk filled with pleasantries about what the other had been up to, Tom with filming and Jenni with studying saying how glad she would be once tomorrow was over. Not long later they arrived at Jenni`s flat. She would hate to leave this place tomorrow. She would hate to leave London and go back home, especially when Tom was still here.

The two swapped numbers again before embracing the other. Tom kissed her cheek letting her know that he couldn’t wait to see her tomorrow afternoon in her cap and gown before walking back to his own flat a few miles away.

Jenni found a text from him when she got inside:

It was so lovely to catch up with you again, Jen. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow in your cap and gown my beautiful best friend. Your Tommy Xxxxxxx

Im so glad im back in contact with you, Tommy. Ive missed you like crazy. Until tomorrow. Your Jen Xxxxxxx

Parting in such sweet sorrow. Good night, good night a thousand times good night Xxxxxxx

Always the charmer, Tommy Hiddleston. Xxxxxxx

Only for you, darling. Your Tommy, always Xxxxxxx

She was so glad he was back in her life and was so happy he was coming to see her graduate tomorrow. She went to sleep with a smile on her face hugging her phone.
