Chapter 11:

A/N: Day 3 of the 30 Day OTP challenge Gaming/Watching a movie. It features both of the prompts in both present and flashback. Again, Thankyou so much for all the love. Found out today that im a girls inspiration to write Fanfiction and that I have fans in Scotland which I was quite overwhelmed by. The amount of love and support ive received for this fic is just amazing. I apologise to those ive made cry in previous chapters and I hope this makes up for it. Lots of love x

Since Jenni had moved in with Tom and whenever he wasn’t away filming, the two friends spent most of their time lounging on the black leather sofa in their lounge making their way through Tom’s varied DVD collection.

They each took it turns to cook and would then sit down on the sofa for the rest of the evening engrossed in the lives of some other characters rather than their own.

Last night was Jenni`s turn to cook, therefore her choice of movie. That was how it worked. They were `the rules` as Tom had so clearly stated the first night they thought of the idea.

Both Jenni and Tom enjoyed a lovely chicken roast before settling down to watch Moulin Rouge. Bad move when it’s a film about love and featured many a kissing scene between Satine and Christian, the two characters portrayed by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

One may also describe it as awkward when all Jenni could sit and do was imagine what it would be like to kiss her best friend sitting opposite her than the equally gorgeous Ewan McGregor on screen. Little did Jenni know that Tom had imagined and thought about the exact same thing. They both longed to feel their lips on the others again but neither would admit that. Instead they stayed in the friendship zone for fear of one kiss ruining their friendship just like it had done all those years ago.

Tonight was no spent no differently. Jenni still continued her job at the restaurant varying shifts so she could still spend time with Tom.

When it was her turn to cook she done the morning shift instead of the afternoon so she could be home to spend the afternoon cooking.  When it was Tom’s turn to cook however, she took the afternoon shift getting home just before eight in the evening.

Jenni turned the key in the lock glad to be home after what seemed like a long day at the restaurant.

As she walked through the door she was greeted with the delicious smell of chilli con carne as it wafted through the kitchen into the hallway.

“Honey I`m home” she called through to him. She wished she was coming home to him as more than his friend, but for now she would just enjoy this. His company and when he cooked for her.

“In the kitchen darling” he replied back. She always swooned when he called her that. Yes, he tended to call everyone that but it still had an affect on her.

Jenni took off her black high heeled shoes, hanging her bag on the coat rack before walking into the kitchen to the most beautiful sight. Her Tommy stood over the cooker, dressed in a dark blue shirt and jeans, a towel over his right shoulder stirring the mince.

“Something smells good” she complemented as she walked over to where Tom was standing. Taking the spoon from him she continued stirring the mince whilst he took the rice out of the microwave that had just pinged. When he wasn’t looking she scraped a spoonful of the delicious dinner onto the teaspoon that was sitting beside the counter and putting it into her mouth. Delicious!

Tom caught her mid mouthful. “Cheeky” he remarked. “It’s not ready yet.” she swallowed before sticking her tongue out at him.

“But I’m hungry” she pouted.

“Patience, Miss Otto and you will get what you so desire” You. I hope. All of you. Saying that in a completely different tone than you actual mean.

“So what’s the film for tonight?” she asked to change the subject and most importantly to get the inappropriate thoughts out of her head.

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” he replied as he set the table and bought their dishes containing chilli con carne and rice over to the table.

“Quoting war?” said Jenni as she began to tuck into her chilli made by her best friend. He looked at her across the table and nodded.

“Bring it on”. She may have sounded keen but in the back of her mind she couldn’t help but wonder why he had to pick that film of all the ones he owned. Their film she hadn’t watched properly without crying or with him since he left.

Tom thought he saw a look of worry on her face but it was gone as quick as it came. He hadn’t watched it for years, he couldn’t force himself too when he could only hear Jenni`s voice quoting it back to him. He thought that as she had come back into his life that it could be just how it used to be when they were growing up.

“Always the competitor” he remarked

“Pfft, yeah, you can talk. There was you always trying to beat me and your sisters at Tennis on Wii Sports when we were growing up”

* * * *

Gaming nights had been a part of the Hiddleston household for as long as Jenni and Tom could remember. Whenever a new game came out on the computer or Game boy they always used to compete against each other to see who could get the highest score. The most recent piece of gaming technology being The Nintendo Wii and Wii Sports.

Tom and Jenni were usually always in a team against Emma and Sarah. Tom always got a certain buzz at beating his sisters in their gaming nights, especially at tennis. It was probably his way of getting them back for calling him broom.

All of the Hiddleston family were competitive but then so was Jenni, especially at bowling. Tennis was Tom’s game and Bowling was Jenni`s.

Now when Emma got the All Star Cheerleading game that was a whole different story all together. Jenni thought it was hilarious watching Tom and Emma compete against each other, especially when Jenni knew Tom never really stood a chance what with Emma having been taking Cheerleading classes since she was little.

She watched Emma effortlessly moving the Wii remote and numbchuk in her hands getting gold stars on every one as she waved her pretend pom poms about. Jenni then looked over at Tom who was getting into a pit of a pickle, his arms flailing about trying to get the remotes to work.

“How do you get this silly thing to work” he retorted as he moved his hands all over the place.

“Try aiming it at the screen properly. You don’t have to flail your arms you broom, just copy what they do on screen” Emma remarked.

Jenni couldn’t help but laugh watching the pair of them. She ended up laughing so much that she couldn’t breathe.

Once the round was over and Emma had once again won Tom looked at Jenni an eyebrow raised.

“I don’t know what you’re laughing at Miss Otto, I bet you can’t do any better” Jenni liked a challenge.

“Oh you wanna bet do you Mr Hiddleston?” she replied fluttering her eyelashes.

“I do at that”

“Bring it on then.”

“If I win you owe me a Mars bar”

“And if I win.” She said grabbing the remote and numbchuk out of his hands “You owe me a galaxy”

“You`re on”

Emma just looked between the two friends. “If you really want to bet something. How about a kiss” she told them sneakily.

Tom gave his little sister a death stare. What was she thinking? He had told her in confidence how much he liked Jenni more than a friend. Before he could even say anything else Jenni interrupted. “Fine by me. What about you Thomas are you game?”

Emma’s bet was way better than hers. Although Jenni knew that the moment her lips touched his she would be putty in his hands.

“Fine. I am too. If you win then I owe you a kiss and if I win you owe me a kiss. Deal?”

“Deal” she replied. “Oh and don’t forget the chocolate too.”

“Bring it on”

Emma Hiddleston. Always the matchmaker. Just like Emma Woodhouse. She watched on as the two friends battled against each other for the title of head cheerleader and possibly for the others heart.

It was obvious in the way they both looked at each other that they were so in love. They just had to admit it to themselves.

Jenni ended up winning, much to Tom’s disappointment. He would just have to stick to beating her and his sisters at Tennis instead.

“You owe me a kiss and a galaxy bar” she told him before she left the living room, saying goodbye to Tom’s sisters and parents before skipping back to her house.

A few days later the two friends were sat on the swings at the park. Tom as promised had bought her winnings of a galaxy bar.

“Very well deserved” he told her before handing her it.

“Why Thankyou very much, Tommy. Although, now I feel bad for having chocolate when you don’t.”

“Its not a problem, Jen don’t worry about it.”

“Share it with me, please I feel bad” He definitely wouldn’t say no to that.

Once the chocolate was devoured, mainly by Tom, he gently moved the hand that was sitting in his lips up to Jenni`s face, slowly cupping her cheek. Jenni`s eyes closed instantly relishing in the new contact between them. Was he really going to kiss her? Tom leaned in closer.

“You have a bit of chocolate, right here” he told her as he ever so softly moved the hand that was still stroking his thumb across her cheek down to the side of her lip wiping it off.

Tom couldn’t help but take in the sight of his best friend before him. He had never really noticed how truly beautiful and prominent her face was before. A small nose, high cheekbones and perfect full lips to match the rest of her perfect frame. He wanted so badly to lean in and take her lips on his but for some reason he couldn’t. Maybe he didn’t want to risk anything. Instead, he slowly grazed his lips along the side of her mouth moving up to her cheekbone before whispering in her ear.

“I love you. I’m sorry I can’t kiss you properly, I care about you too much to ruin anything”

Jenni`s eyes slowly fluttered open taking in her best friends appearance. His broom like curly hair, his beautiful cheekbones that produced the most beautiful lines when he smiled, his lips, straight yet soft and smooth and his beautiful greeny blue eyes she got lost in everytime he looked into hers. Just like he was doing now, accept rather than a look of joy, a look of a wounded puppy etched on his face.

“It’s ok Tommy” she whispered. “I understand. I don’t want to ruin anything with you either. You’re my life I can’t possibly loose you” Little did they know that that was going to happen way sooner than expected the night he left.

“I’m glad you understand Jen. I’m glad I mean as much to you as you do to me. Maybe one day it will happen and I most certainly look forward to it when it does. For now I will go on loving you as I should. As your Tommy, as your best friend who always will be.”

“You’ll always be mine too.” With that the two friends enjoyed the freedom of being kids and feeling free as they swung on the swings.

* * *

After a delicious dinner cooked by Tom, Jenni grabbed the popcorn and Ben and Jerry’s from the freezers whilst Tom cleaned up. The two friends joined the other in the living room a few minutes later.

Tom put the DVD of their childhood in the player before coming to sit comfortably on the sofa. Jenni one side with her feet curled under her, and Tom the other with his legs splayed apart as always.

As the movie played out before them the more comfortable and more into the film they became, quoting almost every line back to each other.

“You know those days when you get the mean reds?”

“The mean reds, you mean like the blues?”

“No. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?”

“Sure.”

“Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany’s. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that’d make me feel like Tiffany’s, then - then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name!”

* * *

Half way through the movie Jenni had uncurled herself from her position on the sofa. Her legs were now stretched out on Tom’s lap as he lazily rubbed and massaged her socked feet. She was barely watching the movie. Her gaze was more focused on her best friend and how amazing he would be as Paul Varjack if it ever went to the West End.

Tom tried to concentrate on the movie he had seen so many times. As far as Jenni was concerned he was watching it, but really he just enjoyed listening to her voice as they quoted the lines back and forth.

“I’ll tell you one thing, Fred, darling… I’d marry you for your money in a minute. Would you marry me for my money?”

“In a minute.”

“I guess it’s pretty lucky neither of us is rich, huh?”

“Yeah.”

She had no idea how true that quote rang out to him. He would marry her in a minute, without fail if only he could stop being so pathetic and admit his feelings for her.

Nearing the end of the movie Tom had stopped massaging her feet and had told her to come and sit by him. So now the two friends were sat cuddled up to each other watching their favourite movie.

Jenni`s least favourite scene came up not long later. Well it was happy in some ways, the fact that Paul admitted his love for Holly but Jenni always got upset. Before it came on Jenni buried her face closer into Tom’s grey t shirt letting the smell of his cologne calm her.

“Holly, I’m in love with you.” Tom said matter of factly.

“So what?” she replied slowly looking up at Tom.

“So what? So plenty! I love you. You belong to me.”

“No. People don’t belong to people.” Jenni replied with tears in her eyes.

“Of course they do.”

“I’m not going to let anyone put me in a cage.”

“I don’t want to put you in a cage. I want to love you.”

“It’s the same thing.”

“No it’s not. Holly…”

“I’m not Holly. I’m not Lula Mae, either. I don’t know who I am! I’m like cat here, a couple of no-name slobs. We belong to nobody and nobody belongs to us. We don’t even belong to each other.”

She never used to cry at that scene before Tom left. But since then she always ended up a crying mess.

Once the film had ended Jenni wouldn’t let go of Tom to allow him to take the DVD out. When he went to move she held him tighter. “Jen, I need to take the DVD out” she shook her head in his chest.

“Jen what’s the matter?” she shrugged before the crying started again. “Don’t leave me Tommy please. Not again” She just needed him to hold her, for all the tears she had been holding in all this time had escaped.

“Darling, I’m not going anywhere. I never knew you got in such a state after watching this film. You never used to.”

“Since you left it hasn’t been the same.” He knew that feeling. “I haven’t been able to watch it without getting upset. I thought I was going to be fine but with you sitting next to me I couldn’t not. I can’t believe your back her apart of my life again.”

“Oh Jen. I’m so sorry for everything. You should have said something if you didn’t want to watch it.”

The menu of the films credits was quietly playing Moon River in the background. Neither of them moved to turn it off.

“I know” she muffled looking up at him behind her lashes. “But I didn’t want to upset or disappoint you.”

“You can hardly disappoint me Jen. I’m so proud of you. You’ve come so far, we both have. You have no idea how glad I am to have you back in my life, to be given a second chance, Jen. I thought id lost you for good but I haven’t and you never will again. I promise you that please believe me, love” She looked up at him now to see an equal amount of sadness in his red puffy eyes. A single tear ran down his cheek which she wiped away with her thumb.

After her crying had subsided Jenni laughed “What are we like?” she remarked. He chuckled pulling her into an embrace stroking her hair.

“A right pair that’s for sure”

“Thankyou Tom, for everything. I’m sorry I got upset”

“Don’t be, Jen. It’s fine. I hate to know you suffered all that pain going through school when I left you though. I feel terrible”

“Tommy, its ok. We’re back together now that’s all that matters.” He nodded before getting up to turn the DVD player off. He then went over to her offering her his hand.

“Come on, let’s get you to bed.” She nodded taking his hand as they went out of the living room turning the lights out in the process before heading upstairs.

When at the top of the stairs they would usually go there separate ways saying good night at the top. But tonight, Tom felt it necessary to walk her to her door and say good night there as to make sure she was ok.

When they reached Jenni`s door, Tom reluctantly let go of her hand pulling her into an embrace. Jenni sighed a sigh of contentment and relief as she now knew that her best friend was back in her life for good.

She pulled away from his embrace, wanting so badly to lead him into her room and have him hold her but she knew that if she did that, she would let her guard down, especially by how fragile and emotional she was feeling right now she knew that she would end up doing something that would muck up their friendship and she really didn’t want to wreck that, no matter how much her heart and body was telling her the opposite.

Tom wanted nothing more to hold her and make sure she was safe until she fell asleep, but he knew he had to be the gentleman and the friend in all this instead of the lover he so wanted to. One day. One day he would admit his feelings to her and one day he hoped she would say yes to marrying him and fathering his children, for he wanted no one else. No one else but his Jen.

He coughed clearing his thoughts.

“If you need me I’m down the hall” he told her. She smiled. “Thankyou Tommy, for that and for dinner and just everything. I love you”

“I love you too. Sweet dreams my Jen”

“And you, my Tommy”

He gave her one last kiss on the cheek before descending down the hall to his room. She couldn’t help but look back at him before she opened the door to her room and think how lucky she was to have a best friend like Thomas William Hiddleston. Maybe one day we’ll be more than friends. One day I’ll admit my feelings to him. One day.
