10. Room For Rent

I paced back and forth in the living room, the tick-tick-ticking of the clock reminding me that time was running out quickly. If I wanted to be able to live on my own then I would need money to come in from any source. I froze for a second as I heard the main bedroom door open. I turned around and a sleepy Harry came out. His curls droopy from all his twisting and turning in bed.

“Mornin’ Sleepyhead” I teased as I made way to him, extending my arms at him anticipating a hug. He wrapped his arms around my waist, nestling his head on my neck and breathing lightly. I kissed his right cheek before speaking to him seriously.

“Harry” I began.

“We need to add some finishing touched to this place and set up flyers around the neighborhood.”

He frowned. “What? Why?”

I sighed as I took a seat on the sofa, a gush of dust gushing out the side, I wasn’t surprised, seeing as though this sofa had been stuck in Zayn’s basement for the last couple of years. He was generous enough to give it to me in the first place.

“Well, I don’t have a job yet, so I need to get money somehow to maintain this flat.”

Harry shrugged his shoulders, “So you’re looking for a room-mate Spence?”

I nodded my head “Exactly. I just hope they’ll be fine with just sharing a living room, bathroom and kitchen.” I crossed my legs, Indian Style on the sofa and placed my hair in a ponytail.

“We need to get those flyers up as soon as possible. Or else I don’t know where I’ll get the money to pay for this place.” I sighed.

“Well…” Harry stared, “you can always work at the daycare center downtown, I know how much you love kids Spence.”

I gulped, remembering my miscarriage from my first pregnancy from my father. When I first found out I was pregnant I began to fantasize about being a mother but my dreams were rapidly crushed when the daily physical abuse threatened my unborn child’s birth.

Harry must have noticed my sudden change of mood as he sat down beside me and raised my chin to face him. “Everything all right Spencer? You got pretty quiet there”

I moved my face away from his grip really fast. “Yeah, I’m fine. Never been better.”

I bolted out of my seat and ran to the kitchen, grabbing a few blank pieces of computer paper and a stash of colored sharpies from a cup near the pantry. Running back to the living room I showed the tools to Harry. A smile swept across his face.

“Let’s do this” I said.

“Harry, can you get that?” I yelled from the kitchen one sunny Friday afternoon. It had been a whole entire week since I had placed the flyers up with Harry and as long as I’m concerned, no one had called me at all regarding the available room. It got to the point where I was about to actually go and get not one but two jobs and I wasn’t looking forward to it, seeing as though I’m still in school and all.

“I’m going. I’m going.”

*Harry’s P.O.V*
I opened the front door of Spencer’s flat. Quickly a pair of green eyes welcomed me.

“Uhh…hello?” I said to the random stranger. She had on a muscle tee with the words “It’s never over” written on it, a pair of skinny jeans and white converse. Probably around 5’8, 5’9, not that much shorter than me. Her dark brown hair was pulled back into a high ponytail and wrapped around her head was a black bandana. If I so myself, she could have easily passed for my sister. Same green eyes, brown curly hair, plus that fact that she had about 5 tattoos on her from what I could see.

She smiled at me. “Hi…erm..I was looking for Spencer Gray, about the room she has up for rent.”

“Oh, that” I said. ‘yeah sure, hold on a sec.”

“SPENCE!!” I yelled. Footstep were heard a few seconds later, and Spencer came into view.

“Hello” she said to the young girl. They shook hands and the questions began.

“I’m Spencer” I said to the young girl at my front door. Her green eyes glistening lik Harry’s on a sunny day.

She waved back before answering.

“My name’s Malena.” She said.

“Well, Malena, since you’re coming to know about the room I assume, I just want to know some stuff about you, if that’s okay with you?”

She nodded her head. “Sure, no problem at all.”

“Great. Take a seat please.” I signaled towards the sofa and she sat down, thankfully on the non-dusty side. I took the chair across.

“So, where are you from, Malena?”

“Well, I’m from New York.”

I chuckled a bit, “ I can tell by your accent.”

Malena smiled “thanks”

Harry popped in, “So, I’ll go get you two something to drink.” He disappeared into the kitchen as I continued with the interview. If all goes well, I’ll have enough money coming in, in no time.
