13. Chapter 12: Ghost

Ghost’s head whipped up as the door slammed open. From the corner of his eye, he saw Shade streak into a corner of the room. It was unnecessary, he knew, but there was no easy way to tell his brother. Muse was practically glowing as she bounded into the room.

“I found him!” Shade emerged slowly, looking faintly embarrassed at his reaction. Muse didn’t even notice. She dropped to her knees beside Ghost’s chair and grabbed his hand. At his obvious confusion, she continued, just as excited. “I found a man who can fix you. Give you back your voice! Ghost, he can…”

She trailed off uncertainly. Ghost barely even noticed. To be able to speak again, to be able to sing. It was something he hadn’t even let himself dream of. It was impossible. And yet, it apparently wasn’t. He knew he was shaking, but he just couldn’t stop. Ghost wrapped his arms around Muse silently – as everything he did was – and hugged her. The tears streaming down his cheeks soaked into her shirt, but she didn’t even seem to notice. Glancing up, Ghost saw Shade’s pale face broken by a smile.

“Where? When? I mean, can he really?” Shade practically tripped over himself as he rushed to them. Ghost reached out and pulled him close too, but all too soon it was over.

Pulling back, Muse looked at Shade. “I don’t know how, but he can. He’s done it before – apparently he’s a very successful doctor – and he’s rich. He lives in the Old City, and we’re going tomorrow. Early.”

Ghost stopped listening then; he had heard everything he needed. Tomorrow morning, he would learn whether he would ever speak again. Tomorrow, he would finally know. Tomorrow seemed like a very long time, suddenly.
