23. Safety in Numbers

“What the hell!” I continued to yell at my best friend.

“I’m sorry I didn’t realize you were busy.” She winked. I glared and stuck my tongue out at her.

“Oh sweetie, you should be using that tongue for better things.” She laughed and stuck her tongue at me.

“SAM!” I shrieked.

“What! It’s true how long have y’all been smoochin’ it up then?”

“That was literally the first real kiss we have ever had.”

“Aww boo I’m sorry I ruined it then!” She gave me a sad face and walked over hugging me.

“It’s fine our relationship is so confusing.” I groaned falling back onto the bed.

“So you are in a relationship then.”

“No, we’re not. I can’t even tell if he actually likes me.” Sam started laughing hysterically at my comment and didn’t stop until tears were running down her face.

“What’s so funny?”

“Honey he likes you. A lot.”

“You really think so.”

“Attie! Seriously?” She face palmed. “He literally locked himself in a room and was depressed for DAYS. DAYS ATTIE. He’s smitten.”

“He is not! I really don’t think he gives a shit about me.” I sighed.

“I honestly thought you guys were in love like I’m not even kidding. Just the way he looks at you.”

“Ok I have known him for literally a week and a half. We are not in love.” Has it really only been a week already?

“I’ve only known Liam for a week and I’m in love with him. How do you feel about him then?” She smiled and blushed when she mentioned Liam.

“Stop pestering me and Sam I’m so happy for you!”

“Don’t change the subject and answer the question.”

“I don’t know how I feel about him honestly.” I sighed. “Like I used to call it a little crush but that seems so cliché.”

“It’s too cliché I won’t say I’m in love.” Sam sung out causing me to give her a look and for her to laugh.

“I’m not in love.” I stated. I’m not.

“Well then you’re falling for him. Admit it. You’re smitten.” I sighed. Am I falling for him? Is this what this feeling is. I have never felt about anyone the way I feel about him. I can still feel his lips on mine hear him groan out my name. I can feel butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it. Ugh, I am smitten. Maybe I am falling for him. No Autumn your not that’s just stupid, but what if  am?

“…maybe. Ugh I don’t know.” I groaned covering my face with my hands. What is happening to me?

“Shhhhhh.” I hiss covering her mouth. “I am not. Stop it. I mean it.”

“Ok fine.” She groaned in fake annoyance.

“I’m going to sleep.” I sigh and roll over.

“K nighty night Mrs. Styles.”

I grab a pillow from my bed and chuck it at her face as she laughs. I curl into bed and shut my eyes letting sleep take me away. Images dance in my head barely forming dreams, just replaying the memory of Harry. When I wake up the next morning sun streams through my room and I remember where I am and smile. I am safe. What a weird feeling safety, security, maybe even a little happiness. A smile plays on my lips as I remember my dreams last night and images of Harry dance in my head again. Is it going to be weird seeing him again? Did it mean as much to me as it did to him? Did it even mean much to me? What am I saying of course it did. God I’m such a freakin wuss letting guys in like that.

“Rise and shine Sleeping Beauty.” Sam smiles jumping on my bed which causes me to groan in response. “Come on get uppppp.” She wines and I roll my eyes getting out of bed.

We walk down the stairs to breakfast and stand in line to get food. My stomach growls as I grab my tray of food. It’s perfectly organized with the correct portions so it’s fair to everyone and as little as it is I don’t think I’ll be able to finish it all. Sam grabs her food and she seems to know what she’s doing better than I do so I follow her. We weave through the tables of the restaurant that has now been transformed into a cafeteria. She keeps walking to the back of the restaurant where I see a table with Zayn, Niall, Julia, Louis, Olivia, and Kara sitting and laughing. We both pull up a seat and Sam joins in on the conversation. I look around the restaurant, eyes scanning for Harry but there is no sign of him.

“He’s on guard duty.” Sam giggles as she notices me looking around.

“Oh.” I reply and weirdly I get a pain in my chest. We finished breakfast quickly and everyone filed off going to different places.

“What do we do now?” I asked Sam it seemed weird not to have to do anything.

“Nothing for today. Laundry day is tomorrow as well as cleaning day, which yes we have to do for ourselves. Our gardening day was yesterday and cooking is tomorrow so we’re safe.” She smiles at me. We walked upstairs to the lounging area we saw yesterday and I see Louis and Zayn playing video games while the girls play cards. Niall is sitting reading a book and everyone else in the rooms is talking or watching TV. There is a computer in the back that someone is playing games on it but I doubt there is any Internet anymore. Everyone looks up as we walk in.

“Hey.” Sam smiles sitting down on the couch beside Niall.

I awkwardly sit next to her. I don’t really feel like I fit in here but I don’t want to always depend on Sam so I get up and walk over to the girls. I sit down and ask them to deal me into their card game, which they do. After a while everyone else joins us and we laugh until its lunch. Lunch was better than breakfast because I actually joined in on the conversation. Everyone turns out to be very cool and it’s slightly weird to be the only one not dating one of the boys but no one questions me on it. Half way through lunch Liam walks up with Harry and they sit down.

“Ugh that was exhausting.” Liam groans as he sits next to Sam kissing her on the cheek. Harry sits down beside Liam, across the table from me. He looks up and we make eye contact. He breaks the stare first looking down at his plate his dimple showing. Someone asks Harry a question and he is pulled into conversation. As weird as it sounds I watch him talk. I never really get a chance to look at him but damn he is hot. His hair is shorter and he must have gotten a hair cut while he was here. His hair is pushed back from his face the sides of his hair short and curly. As he talks his dimple shows and his green eyes light up with excitement when he likes what he’s talking about. He’s wearing a black shirt and black pants and it makes him look more dangerous than I know he is. He looks over at me after a while and smirks as he catches me staring causing me to blush this time and look down.

“Hey guys I think its time for the meeting.” Louis announces as he and everyone gets up. We all walk to the lobby and a tall woman with blonde hair walks towards me.

“Hello. You must be Ms. Winters. I am Amanda Smith it’s a pleasure to meet your acquaintance.” She smiles at me. She is wearing a business suit and has her hair pulled into a tight bun. A voice in the back of my head reminds me that she acts as the president in our community.

“Nice to meet you too.” I smile.

“I understand that you have been briefed about how things work around here?” She asks.

“Yes Ma’am.” I smile.

“Alright well you have guard duty with Mr. Tomlinson this afternoon until dinner so make sure to be prepared for that. I understand that you know how to work a gun.”

“Um yes I do.”

“Alright well then report to the lobby after the meeting and I will issue you a uniform and a gun.” She smiles at me and walks to the podium.

The meeting didn’t last long. She listed a bunch of places that had taken over and events that had happened in the area specifically with the gangs and zombies. She also announces where the delivery trucks are and calls out names to help unload; luckily nobody I know was called. After she dismisses the meeting I stay in the lobby waiting for her to come back and tell me what to do.

“Well, well, well, the golden girl returns. I’m glad we finally have some time to chat. We have so much to talk about.” I hear Louis voice call. I turn around and see his smirk. It’s going to be a long afternoon.
