5. Escape

I gripped my frying pan holding it at the ready. I looked over at Harry and noticed he didn’t have a weapon. Typical I still have to take care of his lazy ass.

“What am I supposed to use?” He yelled. I guess he noticed too. I didn’t want to use my knives unless absolutely necessary and he probably couldn’t handle hand-to-hand combat anyways. Looking around I tried to find another option.

“Grab that sign over there.” I said pointing to a sign that designated the line for first class passengers. “Break of the actual sign part and the bottom and just use it as a stick.” He should be smart enough to use a bat and bludgeon their heads. The thought made me shudder and I let my brain go into attack mode.

“Ok” Harry said. He slowly walked towards the sign breaking off the different parts like I told him to and holding it in both of his hands. He examined it like a science project and I rolled my eyes.

“Meet outside the doors and we will try and find a car. Ok?” I groaned.

“Sounds good!” He exclaimed.

There was no more time to talk. They had arrived. With a war scream Harry ran forward both hands on the stick. He’s going to die I just know it he’s way to stupid. He reached a creature and began to use the stick like a rower uses a paddle, knocking multiple heads in within a couple of seconds. I watched gob smacked as one lunged at him from behind but Harry was too smart for that. He whipped around at the last second slicing its head clean off. He looked up at me with a cheeky grin and continued to battle his way towards the door. This guy was better than I thought. Damn ok then.

Harry’s show had distracted me and I didn’t notice how many had reached me. I let out a small yelp and started making my way towards them. The creature’s jaws snapped loosely with their eyes rolled into the back of their heads. They let out small groans and reached from me from all ends. If this were a movie it would be the worst horror movie ever. It’s too real and too scary. I feel too human if that even makes sense. If I had less of a heart I could run out there and kill them all without blinking like Harry but I can’t. I know I’m going to hell I just know it.

“Come on Fall lets go.” Harry said pulling me out of my daze.

“It’s Autumn!” I snapped. I stood frozen as the approached me. I can’t fight them I just can’t. I watched as they came towards me. One of them reached to bite me and I closed my eyes preparing to die. I could feel its breath on my neck but suddenly I heard a disgusting squish sound and blood replaced it.

“Autumn focus!” Harry screamed grabbing both sides of my face so I was forced to look at him. “It’s going to be ok they’re not people you can do this I believe in you.” I nodded and Harry stepped away and began to fight glancing over his shoulder to see if I was following. Sighing I grabbed my frying pan and deciding to fight. As horrible as it is to say it Harry is right. I can’t just stand here. They are already dead. I can do this.

Running forwards I hit one of the zombies about to bite me. I kept running smacking them from all angles. There were so many of them and they kept circling me. I could see the door a few feet away. More of them circled me and I rotated in a circle smacking them as I went. Stopping when I had completed the circle I stopped to catch my breath for a second, allowing my brain to recalibrate from the dizziness. The next thing I knew one of them had grabbed my ankle pulling me to the ground. I screamed dropping my frying pan as it dragged me towards its mouth. I kicked and thrashed at it but it was no use they had an iron grip. I had finally reached its body and I continued to scream. It leaned forward and lunged. I gasped preparing for the bite. I shouldn’t have killed more of them I was just going to die anyways but the bite never came. Instead I heard a thump and felt blood splatter on my face. Opening my eyes I saw Harry and his stick. Frowning he held out his hand for me helping me up. I grabbed my frying pan and we continued fighting our way to the door.

I felt like I was in a movie or in a haunted house. They jumped out at me and tried to bite me but me or Harry would hit them. It all happened in slow motion too. None of this seems real. None of this is real. I feel like I am going to wake up from this horrible nightmare soon, be able to smile and just go to college but that will never happen again. My world as I know it is gone. I looked up seeing a break in the creatures. Running forward I realized it was the exit door. I pushed at the door but it didn’t move and I slammed my forehead right into it with a crack causing me to fall to the ground. Harry started to laugh.

“THIS IS NOT FUNNY!” I shouted at him but it only made him laugh harder and I joined in. “Help me open the door.” We continued to slam our shoulders into the door but it wouldn’t budge. The creatures continued to make their way towards us only making us push harder. We are going to die.

“Back up.” Harry commanded and I obeyed. He backed up a bit with me then he pulled a police move and broke down the door by kicking it. That’s kind of sexy. NO. Bad Autumn. No. We both ran through the door and pushed the creatures back in trapping them. Harry used another sign to jam the door as they continuously pushed against it, trying to escape with no avail.

“Nice.” I said.

“Thank you.” He replied.

Looking around I surveyed the area. There were only a few of them around and they were more interested in an overturned cop car. I started to make my way towards it but Harry stopped me.

“What are you doing?” He asked.

“We never know what could be in there we may need something later.” I replied.

“I think the whole point of the sentence is ‘we never know what could be in there’. Therefore it is safer over here. Besides you owe me.” He smirked at me.

“Excuse me?”

“I saved your life twice back there. One I owed you the other I didn’t.”

“Wow what?”

“It’s just good to know where we stand.”

“What does that mean?”

“Well apparently were keeping track of saving each other instead of just working together so I’ll keep in mind that you are a real jerk and that I have to put myself first. I was even starting to think I was wrong.” I glared fuming.

“Wrong about what?” He asked looking almost bored.

“My assumption that you are a spoiled jerk but look at that I’m right. Now I’m going to see what’s in the car. Stay or come I don’t care.”

I walked towards the cop car staying quiet so I didn’t attract the creatures surrounding the car. There was gas leaked onto the ground around the car and a small fire that could get worse if it reached the gas. Slowly I bent down to look inside attempting to dodge all the glass on the ground. Inside the car was the dead police officer, not zombified, who had obviously died in the crash. In his belt was a gun and some extra ammo which I removed. Nothing else seemed of use so I got up, looking at the gun.

“What’s that?” Harry asked as he approached me. Ugh not him again I figured he just left.

“A gun genius.” I rolled my eyes. And started to walk towards the parking garage.

“Can I use it?” Harry asked.

“Why would I let you use it?”

“Because we work together.”

“No we don’t I think we made that very clear a minute ago.”

“No all we made clear is that you owe me for saving your life.” He smirked. I guess I do owe him I guess I just figured we were friends and we would work together not expecting anything. Friends? I don’t think we’re friends just allies and I guess allies aren’t required to help each other.

“Do you know how to use it?” I asked Harry.

“The gun. Do you know how to use it?”

“Ya a little. Me and the boys got some target practice for fun on one of our tours.”

“Fine you can handle that then.” I sighed handing harry the gun.

“We should probably find a car.” He told me and we walked towards the parking garage.

“Ya no shit that was my idea.”

When we entered, the garage was empty. Most people have left or stolen cars. Harry and I made our way up each level until we reached one that had a car. I couldn’t tell you what kind of car it was except that it was black and looked sporty. Harry smiled and made his way towards it. The door was open and the person, who had obviously tried to escape, had dropped the keys. I wonder where he went. Is he one of them now? Did we already kill him? I got in the passenger side and Harry started the car.

“Wait a second.” I said. “Your British you don’t know how to drive an American car.”

“Ya so?” He asked.

“So I don’t want to die because of your bad driving so get out. I will drive.”

We got out and switched places and I pulled out of the spot. We made our way down the exit. It was too quiet. There were no creatures in sight and I constantly scanned for them, I continued my way down the ramp and finally reached the bottom. I had spoken too soon. There were thousands of them down here. I stopped the car gawking.

“Drive.” Harry commanded.

“And what? There are thousands of them how am I supposed to get around?” I asked.

“You don’t.” He replied softly. “Hit them. They aren’t people any more Autumn it will be ok.” I nodded. I can’t be weak now.

Flooring the gas we approached them quickly and they flew over the car as I hit them. I was crying and I kept chanting ‘they aren’t people anymore, it’s ok’. Finally we flew out of the crowd and onto the highway heading nowhere and with no purpose.
