1. The Friend- Zone

Rick and Rachel have always been good friends, but Rick wants to move firmly out of the friend-zone and into the ‘more than friends-zone’. He needed to get her to realise that he was more than just her best friend, more than that little boy that she grew up with.

He had stood by helplessly as Rachel had fallen for guy after guy, each breaking her heart more and more until her confidence in herself shattered, she became more insecure and shy. He hated those guys who had used her and manipulated her then left her crying in the dust when they found something better to chase after.

Rick was sure that he had to do something, although it seemed like an impossible task. He became determined. They were meeting up that weekend, to go their place, the place they both felt safe, deep within the forest that was directly behind Rick’s house, almost like his own back garden, down winding paths and through spiky bushes and trees.

He had first discovered the place when he was 8, he was playing in his garden as usual, his mum could never get him to come inside, he would have lived out there if he could. Anyway, he had decided that that day he would be an explorer, hunting for an exciting adventure to go on; he would finally enter the deep emerald green forest. He stumbled over the branches of an old oak and into the new world made of only rich greens and dark browns. He trekked for what seemed like hours, over fallen trees, over branches and through prickly, scratchy bushes. When he came into a small clearing, and as he looked around in wonder at the white specks of daisies and other colourful and exotic flowers that filled the strange clearing with colour he heard a soft giggle. It sounded like music, the giggling grew louder and he followed the sound until he approached a large oak tree, the branches seemed easy to climb and the tree stretched higher and higher all the way up to heaven. Or so it seemed.

His eyes fell on a tiny girl, with soft blonde curly hair that was like a mane around her neck, she had a dimple on one cheek and pink lips. She was a princess. As he looked closer he could see the dirt under her fingernails and on her face, she was climbing a tree, she was dirty. She was like no girl he had ever met! They would all refuse to get dirty because it was ‘yucky’. She was perfect to him.

They got on strait away, and from that day on the small clearing had become their place, their sanctuary. They would play games and pretend it was their castle; they would make up countless creatures that they would fight or protect, depending on their moods.

So he would meet with her this weekend, and he would finally tell her how he felt about her.  But how? He researched all of the things girls liked, he knew Rach really well but he just couldn’t think, every time he thought about it, his knees would grow weak and he would get butterflies trying to burst out of his stomach.

He finally decided to decorate the clearing, with a load of pink balloons and tinsel and fairy lights. Saturday came and he crept out of the house and into the forest, the sun was out, the birds were singing and the flowers were in full bloom. That day was going to be a good day. After the clearing was fully decorated he sent Rach a text ‘U on ur way? Xx’ and he waited in silent torture for the buzz of his phone, for anything.

A sharp gasp behind him made Rick turn around abruptly, she had snuck up on him.

“What’s all this for?” Wonder and amazement was evident in her melodious voice.

“It’s for you Rach, I need to tell you, how I feel… How I’ve always felt” A blush was creeping up his neck and onto his pale face.

“Really? For how long?” Surprise, that was all he could hear.

“Since the first time I heard you giggle”

A giggle escaped her lips then, the same one, and his heart lifted as she walked towards him slowly until she had him trapped in her warm embrace.

“You took your time!” And she reached up on her tiptoes and planted a kiss directly on his lips.

The rest of the day was spent releasing the balloons, climbing trees and kissing. Spring was here at last and Rick and Rachel were very happy together.
