The Replacement

Clones have one purpose: to replace deceased children.
But some people have other ideas.
Ariya is in trouble. She and her Clone are running. To the other side. Will they make it before they're caught?

Dear Mr Davidson,

We are happy to inform you that your company’s request for permission from the Government to manufacture and distribute Clones has been approved.

Terms and conditions: Under the 2050 Cloning Legislation Act, Clones may only be produced for one purpose – to replace deceased children who have died under the age of 18. Please note that Clones with Human Originals that have progressed to live over the age of 18 must be disposed of by either incineration or decomposition. The steps provided below must be followed by all Government approved Clone Manufacturers. Failure to do so may lead to a fine of £10,000,000 or a minimum of 2 years imprisonment. Clones can only be bought or sold to the legal guardians of the Human Originals. The company must create a privacy policy so that information about any purchases is not revealed to any human or Clone. The Government reserves the right to take away their permission to allow your company to manufacture and distribute Clones if they feel that these terms have been breached or another form of misconduct has been taken place by your company.

Guideline for the Manufacturing of Clones:

Step 1. Take an unfertilised egg cell and remove its nucleus, which contains the DNA. The egg cell is now enucleated.

Step 2.  Extract the nucleus from the adult body cell of a different organism of the same species.

Step 3. Insert this DNA into the enucleated or ‘empty’ cell.

Step 4. Stimulate the egg cell with an electric shock to cause cell division via the process of mitosis as a natural embryo would.

Step 5. Once a ball of cells has developed, implant it into an artificial uterus with the same conditions as the uterus of an adult female. The temperature should be maintained at approximately 38°C.

Step 6. The embryo grows into a genetically identical copy of the original adult body cell.

You must register any newly formed Clones with The Ministry of Clone Production within 10 days of creating the fully developed Clones. Any unregistered Clones found will be incinerated or decomposed by your local Clone Management Agency. Please inform us when you have finished construction works on your Artificial Habitat so it may be assessed by the Board of Regulations.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Susan Remington

Dear Mrs Remington,

I am writing to inform you that our Artificial Habitat has been completed and we are ready for the mandatory inspection. I think you will find all safety measures have been taken and all regulations have been met. We have created a haven for our Clones where they will be able to live in a society nearly parallel to ours. It will be a place of comfort where they will be treated properly and given the help that they need by assigned Carers.

A well as the compulsory accommodation buildings used as homes for the Clones, we have added additional centres for schooling so that they may be educated and knowledgeable about how our society functions. There is a medical unit which will be used as a place to care for and treat sick or hurt Clones and to make sure that health levels are maintained. A recreational centre has been built to serve as entertainment and provide any leisure activities they may want. We also have state of the art security systems to make sure that everyone is where they’re meant to be when they’re meant to be there. Surrounding the Habitat is a Dome to ensure that no Clones escape or others get in.

All this will ensure that the Clones are ready and prepared for life outside of the Artificial Habitat should they ever have to venture outside of it and that they meet the requirements of those who buy them. Everything has been designed to provide the Clones with as much comfort as possible.

Our Artificial Habitat is located where Piccadilly used to be situated prior to the building of the Separating Barrier.

We look forward to the inspection.

Kind regards,

Mr Tristan Davidson

Mr Dumas

Governor at Satimas

To Mr Dumas,

As I understand it, our company, Satimas, has been going through serious financial problems this year. I am deeply concerned that this will carry on into next year. The situation has forced my hand and I have had to make some drastic decisions. I have undertaken fraudulent bookkeeping to exaggerate on the net profit the business has been making over the last few months. This is the only option we have at the moment that will keep the business running. The worth of all the company’s assets have tripled due to my actions. The false records mean that we are eligible for bank loans which will help to improve the company’s profits. Your discretion in this matter is of course implied.

Thanking you,

Seb Khan

CEO of Satimas
