6. Chapter six: Friend zone

Beep! Beep! Beep! Ugh, stupid alarm clock! Harry must of put it in my room when I wasn't looking. I sat up with my eyes closed still groggy and turned off the alarm. I rubbed my eyes and blinked. A pair of green eyes were staring straight into mine. I jumped and shrieked like a little girl.
"Harry, you scared the shit outta me!" I yelled. He smirked then burst out laughing.

"You should've seen your face!" Harry says still laughing his head off.

"Haha, very funny..." I can't help it, but that annoys me. I huff and cross my arms over my chest, while pouting.

"Aww, come on. Don't be mad at me." Harry pleads, trying to get back on my good side. He smiles apologetically, I know he's sorry but I can tell that seeing me scared amused him. I looked at him, and then smiled. Seeing my reaction he smiled too. He pulled me closer, putting his hands on my waist. I blush and wrap my arms around his neck.

"I couldn't ever be mad at you, now could I?" I ask. I leaned my forehead against his and looked into his eyes. A small smile started to form on his lips and soon evolved into a full grin.

"Now get out, I have to change." I said turning around him around.

"And I have to leave for that?" He pouted, I playfully pushed him out the door.

“Yes!” I said, slamming the door closed. I could hear him laughing on the other side and walking away. I rolled my eyes at his immaturity and opened the dresser drawer. What was I supposed to wear? I searched my closet frantically. I threw pair after pair of jeans, t-shirts, dresses, heels, and scarves over my shoulder, trying to figure out the absolute perfect outfit. It was the second day of school and I wanted to look my best. I don't know why I care so much, but ever since last night I can't stop thinking about Adam. What if he says something today? I'll just tell him I want to be friends...

I held up a hot pink, sequined dress along with matching pink pumps. Both were thrown into the pile of no's formerly known as the floor of the closet. Next I tried on a plain V-neck dress with white sequins up only one side with black stilettos. I kept the stilettos and threw away the dress. A sleek, elegant white dress that screamed formal and fancy was held up, and again thrown to the floor of the closet. Eventually I came across it, the perfect outfit. It was a beautiful red halter-top, held together so easily. It was fashionable, sleek, and it showed off my boobs enough for Adam to notice but without me looking like a whore. What am I saying?! I like Harry... right? Ugh, so much mixed feelings.

I dug up a pair of curve hugging, black jeans that I remembered throwing down on the floor and slipped them on, matching perfectly. I slipped on a pair of black flats and posed in front of the mirror. Perfect. Now all that was left was my hair.

At around  7 o'clock, five minutes before I was supposed to go to leave, I was ready. A thick layer of mascara coated my lined eyes as I puckered my glossed lips in the mirror, flipping my newly straightened hair one more time.

I heard a knock at the door, "Come in." It was Harry, he walks into the room, his eyes widen when he sees me. From the mirror, I noticed Harry was just leaning on the wall, arms crossed, staring at me.

I faced him and twirled around, ending in a stupid ‘model’ pose. “How do I look?” I wriggled my eyebrows and smirked.

Harry lightly chuckled and shook his head. He looked back at me, eyeing me up and down before smirking. “You look... amazing.” He said in all seriousness.

He opened the door, “You ready to go?” He asked.

“Yea. Speaking of which, we better start walking or we’ll be late,” I responded. We both slipped out of the house and starting to take our 10 minute walk to school.

I haven't been able to take my eyes off April all morning. There's something about her. Yes, she is beautiful, but there's something else. When I kissed her yesterday I felt something weird. Something I have never felt before. I know she felt it too by the way she looked at me. I need to get closer to her. Maybe get to know her a little more?

"I'm no good at starting conversations," I admitted after a few seconds.

"I'm no good at them either." April said, a smile tugging at her lips.

I nodded, the same smirk on my lips. "So… um… what's your favorite color?"

She suppressed a laugh at my lame attempt. "Blue," she answered.

Surprise spread on my face. "I thought it'd be pink or purple."

"Yeah, most people would think that, I would assume." She glanced down at the ground. "Believe it or not, I've never really liked pink. It's just been a common color for me. And purple… it used to be my favorite color."

"Used to be?" I asked curious.

She sighed. "Yeah. I loved the vibrancy of it, but now it's just turned into sort of a bad reminder of who I used to be..."

There was a short pause.
"How about you?" She asked me.

"Orange." I smiled. "Predictable, huh?"

"Orange?" She laughed and looked up at me.

"What's wrong with orange?" I demanded. April chuckled again, she looked amused at my confusion.

"How about your favorite animal?" She said totally ignoring my question.

"You first..." I smirked at her, she rolled her eyes and smirked.

"Umm. An eagle," she replied.

"An eagle?" I tried to cover up a laugh.

"Hey, hey, I'll like what I'll like." She joked. "Okay, you?"

My face seemed to tinge pink. "You're going to laugh."

"No I won't." She insisted

"Yes you will."

"I promise I won't. Tell me," her eyes lit up and she smiled at me.

I looked down at the ground. "It's… um… cats."

She bit her lip. "Really?"

"You promised you wouldn't laugh! I just find them so adorable and lovable—"

"Lovable?" She looked away, trying to cover up another laugh.

I groaned but remained smiling. "Stop making fun of me!"

"I'm not, I love cats. Just didn't expect you to like them," She said laughing once more.

I glanced at her, our eyes locking at one another. We walked in silence again, but this time we stared at each other. I noticed how soft and light her blue eyes appeared, never noticing their color before. I found myself liking them, how the light reflected off of them.

"I never really noticed your eyes before." I jumped at her voice, snapping me back to reality. She had a bashful expression on her face. "They're… cute."

The comment made me smile. "I like yours too," I said. We both blushed and looked away. I wonder if she thinks about me as much as I think about her...

The rest of the walk was silent. It wasn’t awkward though, after a few more minutes we approached our school. Just on time too, I thought. I noticed that almost everyone in the whole school was staring at us, well me, as we passed. Oh great, not again.... This is exactly what happened yesterday. I looked at April, she didn't seem to notice all the attention we were getting. Good. We both walked into school and straight to first period.

We sat down in ours seats and harry turns to me. “So,” he started. “Want a tour around the school?”

“Uh, lame…” I rolled my eyes. I'm guessing it's kinda late for that, since its my second day and I've sorta figured out where all my classes are.

“It’ll get us out of class.” Harry shrugged. Good enough for me, I thought smiling at him.

“Okay, your on. Your my tour guide?” I guessed.

“Who else?” he laughed quietly. I bit my lip with a smile while giving a side glance at Harry then quickly glanced down at my hands. I could see him smiling proudly at himself. Okay, this wasn’t going as horrible as I thought. Harry was a guy I actually clicked with and liked. I don't know what it was about Harry that I liked, but I felt safe around him and protected. Harry raised his hand quickly. Mrs. Popper (our substitute for today) finally looked up and saw Harry.

“Yes Harry?” she said sweetly. She stepped out from behind her desk and walked over to us.

“Don’t we usually have to show new students around the school?” Harry said smoothly. He gestured to me and I waved shyly at the teacher.

“Oh, of course.” Mrs. Popper held her hand up to mouth. “How could I forget? Harry, do you mind?”

“Not at all m’am.” Harry smiled. “C’mon April.” He stood up as Mrs. Popper walked back to her seat. He held out a hand and helped me out of my chair. I tried to keep in a giggle as we walked out of the classroom. We stood outside, making sure the classroom door was shut. I giggled as soon as the door shut.

“Nice going dude.” I laughed. “Someone’s the perfect little school boy aren’t they?”

“Oh yeah.” He smirked. “Total angel.”

“Well then, how angelic are you?” I grinned.

“Why don’t we just find out?” He laughed, starting to walk down the hall. I rolled my eyes and ran to catch up with him. I thought this was kinda fun, skipping class and roaming the halls with Harry Styles.

"Where are we going?” I smiled finally catching up to him.

“You’ll see.” He laughed, turning a corner.

“Sweet. I love surprises.” I grinned.

“Good. I’ll keep that in mind.” He smirked at me. I raised my eyebrow at him as we approached a door. He tried to open it but it was locked. “Aw fuck.” He groaned. “They locked it again. No problem.”

“What are we doing?” I asked with a smile. “You’re not going to rape me are you?” He laughed and started picking the lock. I gasped. “Harry Styles!” I put my hand up to my mouth. I didn't think of harry for much of a bad boy, but I liked this side of him.

“Not so much of an angel now am I?” Harry winked at me and pulled open the door. The door lead to a small metallic staircase. It didn't look like student were supposed to be up there. Part of me didn't want to go, but another part wanted to run up the stairs.

“Are you sure we should be doing this?” I asked. “Its my second day of school, I don’t want to get in trouble.” He already started climbing a few stairs, but I stayed back.

“C’mon babe. If we do get caught, I’ll take the fall.” Harry smirked. Even though the smirk on his face said he was joking, my heart still tingled when he called me ‘babe’.

“Only cause your cute.” I pouted, teasing him back. I following him up the narrow staircase. He led me to a door at the top of the staircase and opened the door for me. I raised my eyebrow at him and stepped through. I looked around with a smile. He had led me to the roof of the school. I turned and looked at him with my eyebrow still raised.

“Roof?” I asked. He nodded with a smile. “Hm, nice spot.” I laughed, walking to the edge to look at the view. It was beautiful, a warm breeze blows through my hair as I feel the warmth of the sun in my body. I actually heard birds chirping, the sun beamed on my face, my gaze was locked onto the cloudless sky. Harry was sitting behind me looking up at the sky.

“Yeah, I love coming up here.” He shrugged.

“Anyone else know?” I asked. I looked back at him then turned back around. Harry has all these secret places that no one knows about. I think it cool, back home only place I had to ‘think’ was my room.

“No.” He responded simply. I turned around to face him, he looked up at me.

“Why me?” I asked. He stayed silent for a while before answering. He looked down at his feet, I swear I saw him blush. Was he blushing? The thought only made me blush too.

“I don’t know. You seem different.” He looked up, his green eyes fixed on mine. He gorgeous green eyes, and that wonderful smile. That always puts knots in my stomach. His eyes seemed to dance like waves on a beach, so kind and happy when he looks at you. I tried to control my thoughts.

“Well, I am from Canada.” I said sarcastically, smirking. He laughed.

“I meant personality different,” he said staring at me. Oh god, now he's staring at me...

“Um… yeah I guess so.” I shrugged. I turned back around the wind blowing throw my hair again. I love that feeling.

“How do you like the view?” he said breaking my train of thought.

“It’s beautiful.” I smiled, looking over the edge. I felt him wrap his arms around my waist and pull me back from the edge. I gave a small scream as I fell backwards.

“Saved your life.” He whispered in my ear. I felt scared and slightly attracted to him at the same time.

“Harry!” I frowned. “You scared the hell out of me!... Again.”

“Oh, really? Sorry love.” He grinned, his arms still around my waist. My heart was racing. I could hear it pounding in my ears, crushing my skull. Just his simple touch sent me into a frenzy, causing shivers to run up and down my spine, and making my head dizzy. He chuckled as if he knew what I was thinking, like he knew that I was nervous.

“You’re incredibly sure about yourself aren’t you?” I rolled my eyes, trying to unlock his fingers. Harry shrugged and finally let go. I smiled at him and lay down on the floor, looking up at the sky. He did the same, watching me carefully.

“What are you doing?” he asked curiously. I side glanced at him.

“Um… looking at the sky.” I answered.

“Hm…” he sat down next to me.

“Not your thing?” I laughed.

“Never done it.” He shrugged.

“Well, you should try it sometime.” I laughed. “Go with a girlfriend, it’s a romantic thing.”

“Meh, girls and I don’t get along.” He frowned. What's that supposed to mean?

“What am I then?” I frowned at him.

“You’re special.” He laughed. His laugh was cute, it made me laugh too.

“Nice save.” I rolled my eyes. He grinned sheepishly at me as I turned my head away from him. We sat in silence for a while. So, does that mean he doesn't have a girlfriend? Well I knew this all along in my head, but I still wasn't sure. I've been staying at his house for about three days and haven't heard talk about a girl... I stare up into the sky and look at the clouds, I smiled.

Maybe that was all I needed in my life, a sick girl telling me she was happy. A girl with tons of problems in her life, not complaining. It struck me as wonderful to know that she was happy. "See that cloud up there?" She asked, pointing to the sky. "It looks like a horse." I looked to where she was pointing an saw a horse shaped cloud floating past.

I smiled, "that one looks like a heart." I pointed to another cloud.

"That one looks like... Lady Gaga mixed with a cat?..." Then she burst out laughing, as if what she just said was the funniest thing in the world. I looked over at her and started laughing myself, just because of how funny she found it. She sat up pulling her knees up and placing her hands over her face and laughing into them. Her laugh was hilarious. It was like an old woman's cackle mixed with an angel. If that makes any sense whatsoever. It was light and silvery, but when she really laughed, she really laughed.

Eventually, she stopped laughing and she removed her hands from her face and looked at me. Our eyes locked and she smiled before scrunching up her face in a silly way. She was beautiful. She really was. "We should probably get back to class," She sighed.

"Yes, we probably should." I got up, and helped her up. We made our way down the steps and into the hallway again. I secured the lock back onto the door the way it was. We both turned around to see the principal, standing with his arms folded across his chest and a stern expression. April took a step away from me. I knew what this might look like and I knew it wouldn't be good.

"What are you two doing?" He narrowed his eyes at me.

"Uh," I stuttered, trying to come up with something to say. "I was showing the new student around."

"Why were you on the roof Mr. Styles?" he asked. Neither me or April responded to his question, so he continued. "Tell me why I shouldn't give you both detention for skipping right now," he demanded.

"It's not her fault she didn't know we weren't allowed up there... I told her it was okay," I explained quickly.

"Is that true?" He asked April. I nudged her with my elbow.

"Well…yes," she whispered. Suddenly the bell rung and it was time for second period. The principle looked around hesitantly.

"Fine. Go back to class. But if something like this ever happens again, I won't be so tolerant," he said in a growl. We both nodded. Wow, saved by the bell. We walked away and as soon as we turned the corner, burst into giggles.

"That was close," I breathed.

"Yeah, I thought he was going to give us both detentions," She giggled back. "Thanks for that Harry, for trying to keep me out of trouble. That was really sweet of you to do," I chuckled lightly and flashed her an uneven grin.

"No problem," I winked at her.

"Thanks again." She did something unexpected, she kissed my cheek and went into the classroom without a word. I stood there dazed for a moment, then followed her into class.

Second period blew pass really fast, but I had to go to third period now and see Adam again. My heart sank at the thought. Unfortunately he sits near me, so I'm expecting a bunch of notes passed to me and a whole lot of whispers in my ear. When I walked into class he was already sitting down. I avoided eye contact with him, and I sat down in my usually seat next to Jade, then got out my books. I expected his eyes to be on me at all times, waiting for me to turn and talk to him. I glanced over at him to see if he was looking at me, but he wasn't. He was just on his phone. What if he's texting me? I saw him send the text but I didn't feel a vibrate in my pocket. I heard a vibrate come from the back corner of the class where Kelsey was sitting. He was texting his ex? Apparently he moves from one girl to the next... Fortunately for them our teacher is deaf and doesn't hear a thing. There could be a shooting happening and she wouldn't even notice. Ten minutes passed and he still hasn't said anything to me, looked at me, texted me, or anything. Why?!

"April?" Jades voice snapped my mind back to reality as I met her gaze, my eyes involuntarily scanning her deep green eyes.

"Hm?" I asked still thrown off a little.

"So..." she said with a smirk.

"So...what?" I replied trying to avoid what I knew she was about to mention.

She looks at Adam then at me. "Why do you keep staring at him?"

My face got red, "I'm not."

She gave me a look, "Come on April, are you gonna try to deny it? I'm your best friend, I know there's something going on," she insisted. I stayed silent. I hesitated before telling her, not knowing if she'd keep a secret or not. "Pleeease," she begged.

I gave in, "Okay, Okay. But you have to PROMISE not to tell anyone." She nodded. I looked around, checking that there was no one to over hear us. Satisfied that we were alone, I continued, "Adam asked me out last night."

Jade's eyes widened. "He asked you out? What'd you say?"

"I said no," I whispered.

"Cause I couldn't do that to Harry, I can't kiss him then date someone else."

"You kissed Harry?!" She asked bewildered. My blush answered her question. "When? Where?"

"Yesterday... Then in the hallway on the way to second period,"

"Then why don't you guys get together?"

"I'm just not ready for a relationship. I mean, we just met."

"So... Do you like Adam?"

"Ugh, I don't know... I just hope they don't kill each other over me."

I sat down at the lunch table next to Jade and look around.

"Where's Harry?" I asked Jade.

"He's probably still in the lunch line," she answered. "But it looks like you have other things to worry about."

I looked at her confused, and she pointed to Adam. He was sitting at a table near us staring at me. Our eyes locked as we stared at each other, our gaze so intense, full of so many unspoken words and emotions. Then the unexpected happened, he got up and started walking over. Oh. My. God. My heart started pounding heavily in my chest as I tried to get a hold of myself.

"Oh, my God! He's coming over here," I whispered frantically. "What do I do?"

"It's okay. We'll just chat with him for a couple minutes and see what happens," Jade suggested in a calm voice, giving her friend an encouraging nudge.

"Yea. Just a chat. For a couple minutes," I mumbled to myself, my breathing becoming shaky as Adam drew closer.

"Hey, Adam," Jade greeted, giving me a couple of minutes to recover.

"Hey," I said smiling at him.

Immediately Jade was questioning him, "What's up with the cold shoulder in class?"

"Oh..." He scratched the back of his head trying to find the right words to say. He cleared his thoat, "Uh..."

"Adam, don't worry about it," I said saving him the trouble of explaining. "Is there something you wanted?" I smiled.

He seemed to get his confidence back, and returned a smile. "Well I'm having a party tomorrow and I was wondering if you could come. You can to if you want Jade."

“She’s busy.” A voice from behind me said. I looked up, coming face to face with Harry, who was giving Adam his scariest I’ll-Kill-You look. He set his tray down beside me, but didn't sit down.

“Harry.” I said in a Don't-Do Anything-Stupid tone. I looked at him irritated.

“Leave her alone Adam, she doesn't have time for—”

“Harry.” I repeated, getting frustrated.

“I think April can talk for herself,” Adam shot back, inching closer to Harry.

“Adam.” I muttered.

“Unless you want your dick ripped off and shoved down your throat, I'd back off!” Harry threatened, also getting into Adam's face. I sat there helpless to say anything. What do I say? This is going to far, their going to rip each other in half.

“Harry!” I yelled. "Guys stop, please." Both guys froze, but didn't take their glare off each other. They knew that they couldn't fight in school, whatever differences they had would be solved later.

Adam turned to me, "I'll see you later." He looked back at Harry before walking back to his table. Harry sat down but never took his eyes off Adam.

I turned to Harry, "What the hell was that?!"

"Why don't you ask Adam?" He shot back in a mocking tone.

"He's just a friend Harry." I assured him, and put my hand on his, which he quickly shook off. Hurt, I rested my hand back on my lap. Is he really this jealous?

"Jesus, how blind are you April? Couldn't you see the way he looked at you? He was practically begging me to punch him. He was challenging me with that annoying cocky glint in his eyes. I'm surprised I didn't knock his perfect little teeth in." Harry seethed.

"He was just asking me to a party, besides it sounds fun," I turned to Jade. "Right?" She nodded.

Harry didn't seemed convinced, "Oh my god! You like him don't you?" He narrowed his eyes at me. I flinched at the loudness of his voice.

"Of course I don't! Well– I mean..." I trailed off not knowing how to finish the sentence without making him mad.

"I fucking knew it." He spat through clenched teeth. He grabbed his tray and stood up. "I'm sorry, I just need... Some time alone..." With that he sped out the cafeteria, not looking back once.

I storm down the hallway and out of the school. I didn't care if I had to eat outside, I needed to get out of that place before I exploded. What a fucking prick! Adam is the biggest male whore in the school! Does April not realize that?! He just tries to get as many girls as possible and if he can't get one he has to lie to get her. He's known for getting smashed and hooking up with lots of girls. He's such a man-whore, I hear he keeps a list of all the girls he slept with. He doesn't deserve her. No one does really, no one will understand what she went through or what she has to go through everyday. She deserves the type that'll love her until the end of time. She deserves the type that'll always be able to promise her the world and promise her that he'll always be there for her no matter what. She desrves the type that'll hold her and protect her even through she doesn't need the protection. She deserves the sort of guy that'll make her smile and laugh and show her just how wonderful being in love actually is.

I think I'm falling for her. It's crazy, I've never felt this way about anybody in my life. Is she toying with my emotions? First she kisses me, twice! Then she doesn't even talk to me about it... Then she says she's ‘just friends’ with Adam, who obviously likes her more than a friend. Soon enough their going to be dating and Adam will have another girl to add to his stupid list! And what if she goes to that party?! Adam's parties are wild, people get knocked up, drunk, or worse... What if the police come? Dammit, he just makes me so mad.

I heard the bell ring from inside the school. I got up and tried to ignore the anger coursing through me.
