9. My Mumless First Birthday

Nine

“Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Bridget the Birthday Bear! Happy birthday to you” Scarlett sang.

I sat up in my cot and smiled. Scarlett was standing in front of me holding a large box. My new mum was holding a large cake coated in thick, pink icing and decorated with sugar roses. My name was written in lilac buttercream on it and red sugar hearts edged its star shape.

“Happy Birthday Bridget!” David and Daniel chorused.

They put a tightly wrapped present into my hands and ran back into the living room.

My new mum put the cake on Scarlett’s desk and walked out without a word. She hadn’t ever said a word to me. Not even ‘Happy Birthday’ I guess she was scared I wouldn’t like her or I would call her mum and she would remember that she’s not my mum and that I was adopted the day before my first birthday. It was almost like Scarlett was my mum. I liked the sound of that.

“Want some cake?” Scarlett said.

She skipped over to her desk; cut out two perfect slices of my birthday cake before carrying me out of my cot and sat me on her bed.

“Come on!” she teased, “Open wide for the sparkly cake fairy!”

I obediently opened my mouth and felt the fluffy sweetness of the cake dance around my tongue. The icing was sugary and dainty. It was the best thing I had ever tasted!

Scarlett spoon fed me a whole slice then rolled across the bed and picked up the two presents lying on the edge of her tie dyed bed.

“Open it.” She prompted.

I gently peeled back the wrapping paper of the tiniest present and stared. Daniel and David had given me one of their chewed up action figures. It was rigid and squeaked whenever it moved. ‘Awesome’.

I reached out for the second present and peeled back the wrapping paper. I folded back the flaps of the box inside and stared.

A doll. Scarlett had bought me a doll. The doll had a head of unruly brown curls and brown eyes that moved when you tilted the doll. It had the lightest brown skin and little flecks of freckles scattered over it. It stunned me into silence. It was a large doll and it made me seem tiny compared to it but it made me smile. It looked exactly like Mabel.

“I thought you would go for something more on the girly side!” she whispered.

“Thank you,” I murmured.

I hugged the doll in delight. I felt the tiniest of tears start to roll down my face but then dry up with a perfect hiss. My birthday was going to be perfect. Even without Mum.
