11. In the Cells

I woke up and found my ankle was much better. The cell around me was dark and gloomy, but you could still make out shapes of objects and people. I was about to go to sleep again, but someone stopped me, a voice.

“Vicky? Is that you?” it sounded hopeful, and I crawled to where the voice was coming from. A hand shot out, and touched the glass, but I relaxed when I saw its owner and started to cry. Dad. He shuffled towards the glass and touched the glass. I placed my palm on his and smiled. He was dirty and unshaven, but he was still my dad. I looked at him.

“Why are you so dirty? Where did you get all the muck from?” I asked, puzzled. He grimaced, and then he looked up, straight into my eyes. Those eyes could make you tell truth without a hesitation.

“They have set a torture course, outside, they have 3 levels, considering the reason you are in here. Oh, God. Vicky, there are no words to describe it.  It is horrible!”

“Dad, I’ve missed you so much,” I whimper, I felt very vulnerable. Dad smiled and said his favourite saying.

“If there’s a will, there’s a way. Sorry, Vicky, I just can’t believe you’re here!” he said, I smiled at him and leant my head against the glass.

“Oi, you know the rules, stop talking!” One of the guards had spotted us and was making his way over. I scramble away, wincing in pain. Dad however, looks calmly into the guard’s face and says sorry.

I just couldn’t believe he did that. And the guard was perfectly happy with that response, so he turned back to his mates and was engaged completely in the conversation they were having. I shot a quizzical look at my dad, but he just returned it with a smile.  I wondered what he was doing in here. Then I had a brain wave. I started to sign with my hands. Dad recognised what I was doing and started to respond. The conversation went like this:

Me: What are you doing in here?

Dad: I refused to join CSS or give information. Your mother was furious.

Me: What do you know about Adam Jones?

Dad: He is the head of CSS son and has the ability to read minds. I don’t trust him.

My heart stopped. How was dad going to react when I told him?

Me: Dad… I have something to tell you.

Dad: What is it sweetheart?

Me: Well, I am in love with Adam Jones.

Dad looked at me, shocked with me. I just looked at him. He shook his head and smiled.

Dad: Trust you! Just be careful around him, alright?

I nodded and turned away. I looked into the lock of my cell door. It was finger print sensitive. Well, I wouldn’t be escaping for a bit. I heard the door unlock and a guard came through.

“The Head would like to see you,” he said. No doubt he wanted to see me. I was led away from the cell and towards the place where no agent had ever come back from.
