6. Chris and James

“Hey Vic, what’s the long face for?” James flopped down beside me with the folder that Agent Reed sent him to get it, landing on the floor. I explained to him what happened and once I had finished, he burst out laughing!

“What’s so funny?” I asked him, feeling very confused. So he explained, chuckling here and there. “There has been a debate going all over the department, saying who is going to stand up to Agent Reed next, and they said it was probably going to be you!” he grinned like he has found the luckiest thing in the world.

“But who did it last time?” I asked him. His face darkened at the mention of it. “Yes, who did it last time, Agent Roux?” Someone echoed my question. We both stop and stared at the speaker. Agent Reed was behind us and the doors to the meeting room were opened. I felt all eyes on me and blood rushed up into my face.

“So who did it?” Agent Reed was demanding, glaring at us. James mumbled something inaudible, eyes down. “I didn't hear that!” Agent Reed said in a sing-song voice. “ME!” James yelled, his face red and eyes wild. “And the time before that?” Agent Reed was pushing him. “Chris,” James said his voice breaking; the look in Agent Reed’s eyes was unforgivable. But he wasn't finished yet.

“Who before and the time before that?” Agent Reed was pressing James. “Mum and Dad,” James almost sobbed. I watch in horror, shocked to see what is happening to my brother. Agent Reed smiles like he is satisfied. “Well, like father, like son. Like mother, like daughter. Aren't you all so similar?” then he started to make his way back to the meeting room. James stood up turned around and walked out the room. But as soon as he was out the door, he broke into a run. All I could hear were his sobs echoing around the hall. I turned to face Agent Reed.

“Thank you Sir, how am I supposed to say would he like to stay at mine for a couple of days?” I said to him, and then stalked out the room after James. I think about what James had said about our family, my own family. A mother, who is working for CSS, a father who is being held prisoner and two brothers who were acting like dopes! And on top of all that, I was falling in love with someone who I didn't even know about! Could my life and family get any worse?

When I got back, I found Chris asleep on his bed, and to my surprise, James on the floor next to him. Brothers! Still fuming, I wandered back down the stairs to the kitchen, where the whisky bottle and glasses were there. I looked at the bottle, reached out to it, held it… then smashed it. I sunk down to the floor and cried. I cried like I had never done before.

After I don’t know how long, I reached for my mobile and phoned Becky. No way could I do that on my own.

“Becky… I need your help…” I whimpered into the phone. An alarmed voice answered back at once:

“I am coming over, don’t move a muscle!”
