8. The Parade

I woke with a start. Almost a week had gone by since my run in with Tammy and Jason. I'd gotten a job working as a waitress at a small cafe called Tulip Garden. I'd saved enough money to get the small apartment. It had one bedroom with a king sized bed and a small living room. The kitchen was fairly large, but not very big. I had had to pick pocket a few people and steal then sell a few things to afford it along with the money I'd earned as a waitress. I worked Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

It was Saturday today but the cafe was closed for the annual Swan Parade. Apparently this town had a lot of swans so they decided to make a parade for them. I stood and pulled out a yellow spaghetti strap tank top. I pulled it over my wings. I pulled on jean shorts, managing to cram my tail uncomfortably in. I grabbed my new straw sun hat, and put on my comfy pink sandals. I walked to the kitchen, wings hanging lazily by my side. I whistled as I pulled out a box of Frosted Flakes and poured a bowl.

I sat on the couch, eating as I turned the tv on. I watched as they broad casted the parade. I nearly choked when I saw them zoom in on one part of the crowd, revealing a mocha skinned woman with perfectly cut, frizzy black hair. She stood above a few women and wore sunglasses. She had on a brown sun hat like mine and as she turned, I could faintly make out a bulge in her pant leg. I stood. I put on a light yellow, quarter sleeve sweater.

I rushed out the door, locking it and running down the stairs. I ran past the front desk and through the streets. Down the side walk, following the signs, and eventually coming to the parade. I stood on tip toes trying to see the woman. I pushed through the crowd. After what seemed like an hour of searching I came to where the parade had began. Only a few people still were hanging around. I sighed. 'Dammit I missed her.' I thought.

"So it worked, you saw me on tv." A voice chuckled.

I turned. "Kitieta." I breathed.
