6. Nightmare

I squirmed and tried to scream. A hand clapped over my mouth. The burning red eyes of Satan stared hungrily at me. He grinned. "So delicate, yet so naughty." He chuckled.

"Please!" I managed to say.

With a cackle he dug his sharp nails into my sides, pressing close and bite my lips. The darkness consumed me. "No!" I shouted, sitting up.

I sat on a rooftop. I wiped the sweat from my forehead. "Just a nightmare, just a nightmare." I breathed.

It was late at night. I heard music coming from a bar down the street. I still wore the close Mabel had given me. I fingered the money in my pocket from her. I stood. I pulled my leather jacket over my wings after landing in an alley. Walking toward the bar I heard the shouts and laughter if drunken men. I stopped, did I really want to go there? A woman walked out on the arm of a man and they head down the street, swaying and tipping. I scratched my chin. "Nah." I said and started the other way.

Maybe I could find a clothing store. I found no store open so I broke into one again. This time I grabbed jean shorts and work jeans. I grabbed a black tshirt and a cherry colors spaghetti strapped tank top. I left money on the counter and left with a plastic bag. I put my pairs of clothes in the bag and put on my work jeans. 'When I get enough money I'll rent an apartment.' I thought.

I heard a coo and turned. A pigeon sat a few feet away. My stomach rumbled. I scrunched my nose. "It's not the worst thing I've eaten." I sighed.

My claws grew out and I lunged.

As I finished off the pigeon, feathers scattering the roof around me, I stretched my back. Burping, I stood. The sun was coming up. I pulled off my jacket and started flying toward Mabel's. my jacket flapped in the wind I hoped it wouldn't attract attention. My wings pumped quickly then glided for a short distance. I hummed and passed the bridge in only a few minutes. Flying was much quicker than any walking. I fixed my hat and landed in Mabel's drive way. I realized how early it was and got uncomfortable. 'Maybe I'll just go look around the garden.' I thought.

I snuck around the house, crouching behind bushes. I was behind a large hibiscus when I heard the sliding door open. I dropped lower and peered from behind the branches. "Grandma, she's not that bad." I heard Jason say.

"I don't believe it. No good comes from someone like her." Mabel huffed.

"You said the same thing about Tammy when you met her. Then-"

"then I found out she was a shifter and I've watched her closely ever since." Mabel interrupted.

Tammy, a shifter?! I listened closer. "Listen Grandma, Red isn't a bad girl. Not from how's she's been acting so far." Jason murmured.

"So far! Who knows how she'll act down the road?! And what girl has a name like Red?" Mabel started. "She never takes off that hat or jacket even when she's practically swimming in her own sweat!"

I gulped. "So?! Lots of people do!"

"Name one!"

"There's um..."

"Exactly." Mabel snapped. "Red isn't who we think and I sense bad things will happen if we stay involved with her."

"Grandma please, she's needs this job."

"No she doesn't there are plenty other places she could work at, that sly whore." Mabel growled.

My stomach twinges and anger started rolling in me. "Grandma..." Jason sighed.

"Tammy is enough. We were only supposed to be pure angels but your mother had to go and mate that demon!" Mabel muttered.

My eyes widened. Mabel was an angel and Jason was a half-breed. I swallowed and as they walked inside I flew off.
