4. A New Job

"Dammit." I hissed through clenched teeth as I sat up from the hard, concrete roof of an apartment building.

I had no money so how was I to earn a place? I rubbed the back of my head and thought. 'A job! I'll get a job and work like those normal humans do!' I glanced around at the shops and stores below. 'But where? There are so many choices.'

I was good at dancing, gymnastics, and making clothes. I bit my bottom lip as I remembered the shop I had broken into last night. I climbed down the fire escape and wandered down the streets. I stopped at a store with a sign that said: HELP WANTED. I entered, triggering a bell to ring. It was a regular super market. An old woman looked up from behind the counter and smiled. "Hello dear, may I help you?" She had wiry gray hair piled on her head in a bun and wore a baby blue dress with a white apron.

Green eyes smiled from behind round glasses. "Um, I saw you were looking for help." I began.

"Ah yes. We need someone to stack and organize our stocks." The lady paused. "Now, dear, my i know your name?"

"Red." I said.

"Red? Interesting. Well, Red, if you want to work here come here tomorrow at seven'o'clock." The woman smiled.

I nodded and walked out. I had a feeling I wouldn't get paid well here. I would find another job too. Sighing, I wandered some more, with no luck. I sat on the steps to a library to think. "What now?" I muttered.

"Red? Is that you?" A voice behind me exclaimed.

I turned to look at Jason. "It is! This is great!" He smiled from the top of the stairs and beckoned to me.

I walked to him and shook his hand. "Hello." I murmured.

A piece of my bangs fell into my face and I blew a puff if air at it. "What are you doing?" Jason asked.

"Looking for another job. I got one stacking food and stuff at a market." I scrunched my nose. "It probably won't pay to well."

"Hm...hey!" Jason held up his hand as he got an idea. "My grandma owns a big house and she can't take care of all that she needs to. Maybe she'd let you help her and she'd pay."

Jason started scribbling the address and phone number of his grandma. "Uh thanks."

I took the piece and stuffed it in my pocket. "No problem. I help everyone." Jason smiled and walked down the stairs with me. "You got a ride?"

He looked around. I shook my head and he smiled, grabbing my elbow and dragging me to a sleek red convertible. I stared at white leather seats as he got in and opened the passenger door. "Ill drive you to Grandmas."

I slowly got in and he drove off. The wind blew my loose blonde hair around and I had to hold my hat on. "Jason!" I yelled over the wind.

"Yeah?!" He yelled back.

"I love this car!" I yelled and he smiled with triumph.

I gasped as we pulled into a long gravel drive way leading to a large white mansion. Trees like willows and cherrys bordered the drive way and large property. I stared awestruck, as we got out of the car and up to a large double door. Jason knocked and walked in yelling, "Grandma, I'm here!!"

"Jason, Jason! No need to yell."

A short woman with snow white hair and violet eyes appeared from a kitchen bordered with a marble bar. "And who's this?" She smiled at me.

"Red. She's looking for a job and I thought she could help you out around the house." Jason gestured to the mansion.

LHm, I guess so. Can you come at six 'o' clock?" Jason's grandma asked.

I nodded. "I can pay you twenty dollars an hour." She said nonchalantly.

My eyes widened. I'd totally miss that job at the market. "That's more than enough Miss..."

"Mabel. Call me Mabel dear." I grinned a shook her smooth hand.
