29. Explanations and good friends.

Mia's P.O.V

As I leaned over and pecked Zayn's cheek I heard the flash of a camera and quickly whipped my head to the direction of the flash. It was then that I saw the camera man in the bushes near where we were sitting. He wasn't close enough to have heard our conversation but he was close enough to have some pretty decent pictures. If this were any other situation I would have walked right up to him and beat him to death before taking his camera and smashing it to pieces. But considering the circumstances I figured that that wasn't a very good idea.

Instead I stood up and walked away quickly, Zayn a few steps behind me. When I got a certain distance away I picked up my pace and then bolted into a run. I ran fast, back to my apartment building and only stopped when I had reached the door. I had completely forgotten about Zayn until he was bent over, panting next to me.

"You. Run. Fast." He says between breaths.

"Too fast?" I ask, smiling.

"Just a tad." he replies, flashing me a grin of his own.

After he had caught his breath we walked up the flights of stairs and entered my apartment, where we were immediately greeted in the kitchen by a hungover Niall.

"Hey." He said as we walked in, before taking two nurofens and then sculling down a glass of water. "Guess I drank more than I thought" He said, referring to the night before.

"Yeah." I tell him, "I did the same this morning."

He put down the glass and gave me a light kiss on the lips. When he pulled away he noticed Zayn standing behind me.

"Zayn! What are you doing here at 12:30?" He asks, "I don't think I've ever seen you awake this early!" He says sarcastically, making both Zayn and I laugh.

"We went out for coffee."  I tell him.

"And got mobbed." Zayn finishes.

Niall pulls a sour face making me giggle. "You're so cute." I tell him.

"I try." He shrugs.

Zayn, Niall and I sit and talk for about half an hour before Niall notices the bruise on my cheek.

We were talking about make-up and going natural and they were looking at my face when Niall said "Hey what's that? That wasn't there yesterday was it?"

"Uh yeah, it was." I say quickly, causing Niall to raise his eyebrows.

"Yeah, I noticed it last night when you, Alex and Liam showed up." Zayn says, defending me.

"Yeah." I said agreeing and mouthing 'Thanks' to Zayn.

"Well what happened?" Niall asked.

I had to think fast. "Um, last night when I was doing Alex's make-up I accidentally hit myself with end of the blush brush." I said.

"So you got a bruise from bristles with some sort of powder on it?" Niall asks, causing me to snort out a laugh.

"No the other end of the brush. I did not bruise myself with blush. I'm not that stupid." I tell them.

"Really?" Zayn and Niall say at the same time. Causing me to give them a shove.

"I should probably get going." Zayn says, standing up.

"Ok, well will we see you at Liam's tonight?" Niall asks, him and I also standing up.

"Uh yeah, probably." He replies.

"Cool. See-ya tonight then." Niall says.

"Yeah, see-ya then. Bye Mia!" Zayn says, leaving.

As soon as Zayn leaves, Niall wraps his arms around my waist and kisses me passionately.

"When I saw your bruise I thought maybe someone hit you when you were mobbed."

"That probably would have made a better story but nope, just my idiocy." I assured him.

"You're not an idiot." he tells me, causing me to raise my eyebrows.

"Alright, but you're my idiot." He says, dropping a soft kiss on my lips.

"That's fine by me." I say, grinning and kissing him back, wrapping my arms around his neck.

I pulled away and walked into the kitchen to get a drink when I noticed Zayn's phone on the bench.

"Zayn left his phone here, i'll run out and give it to him." I tell Niall on my way out.

"He's already left." Niall says.

"I can catch him." I tell him, running out the door.

I run down the stairs with Zayn's phone and as I was about to step out the door of the building I heard Zayn's voice say, "Going somewhere?"

I spin around and see him leaning against the wall.

"What are yo-" I start.

"I forgot my phone." He says, shrugging.

"You left it there on purpose." I say.

"Maybe but I assumed that you wouldn't want to talk in front of Niall." He tells me.

"Um, yeah, right." I stammer.

"Well..." He trails off, waiting for me to talk.

I'm wracking my brain to think of a good excuse but I know he won't buy it. So, I take a breath and decide to tell him the truth.

"Look, it's a long story but I ran into my ex-boyfriend who is um- kinda abusive." I say, biting my lip nervously.

"And he hit you?" Zayn asks, concerned.

"Yeah. That's how I got the bruise."

"Mia, I'm so sorry." Zayn tells me.

"Don't be. And if it makes you feel any better I hit him back." I reply, smiling.

"Really?" He asks, shocked.

"Don't sound so surprised. And maybe I didn't hit him, I just tried to break his arm."

Zayn smiled, "Well Mia. I thought you were so sweet and innocent. Turns out you're a tough bitch."

"I'm going to take that as a compliment, so thanks."

"Thanks Zayn. For everything." I say, hugging him.

He hugs me back, warm and friendly. Zayn made me feel safe, and for a second, I completely forgot about the cameraman in the bushes and the cruel waitress and what Niall's going to say when he finds out.

Because Zayn was a good friend. And I am in no way in a position to pass up a friend.

We pull out of the hug and I hand Zayn his phone.

"Thanks." He says, taking it from me.

"Not a problem. See-ya later." I tell him, turning to walk up the stairs.

"Mia, wait." Zayn says, making me turn around, "Whatever you tell Niall, you know to explain. Just text me and I'll back you up."

"Will do." I say, turning to walk up the stairs again.

"Just uh- don't say you were kissing my bruise that I got from a mascara wand." He adds.

"Don't worry. I wouldn't want to make you seem any less masculine by giving you a make-up related injury." I reply, "But you are one of the few guys that actually knows what a mascara wand is so..." I trail off, teasing him.

"Hey, I had to play a woman for Best Song Ever so I think that's a good excuse." He retorts.

"Yeah sure." I say, "See-ya!" I yell, running back up the steps to my apartment.

"You catch him?" Niall asks when I get back. He was sitting on the couch scrolling through his phone.

"Yeah." I tell him, sitting down with him, "I caught him."
