Chapter Fourteen:

What actually happened on the way to the police station?

The weather was definitely better than what it had been only a few hours previously. The old man hobbled his way through the cobbled streets of London, and he was closely followed by the young girl who was slowly walking behind him. She had been quiet since they had left the house and Scruffy had been given the idea that perhaps she had entered into a deep and very important thought. She was beginning to lose him in the crowd so he stopped for a moment and stopped before finding her again.

“You seem very quiet.”

Stephanie seemed to come back down to planet earth.

“Sorry?” she hadn’t completely heard what Scruffy had said.

“I said you seem quiet.”

“Just thinking.”

“About what?” Scruffy hobbled beside her.

“About what to do.”

“About when you meet your parents?”

“No. Just about…I don’t really know.”

“We will be at the station in a few moments.” Scruffy looked at the street sign as he made this remark.

“Are you looking forward to seeing them again?”

“I…I suppose so.” Stephanie didn’t sound very hopeful.

“You don’t sound as though you are looking forward to it.” Scruffy stopped at the edge of the road which leads towards the large rectangular Kensington Police Station.

“They’re not particularly loving people.” Stephanie confessed.

“You should have seen my parents!”

“What do you mean?” Stephanie was confused.

“Well….my father was also a tosher. But he died when I was seven, he beat my mother regularly. So when he died mother decided that she would marry again. Her and this man had been friends for quite a while. So then they married but mother met another man. So her husband beat her to death. He didn’t want anything to do with me; I was ten and already one of the best toshers in London. I wasn’t stupid, I needed somewhere to live and a place to eat and drink. So I went to my local church and stayed with the local vicar before going into the orphanage. But I still was a tosher; of course I’m going to retire next year. I can’t climb down the holes now. It’s too much work. And so at the orphanage we learnt about the Almighty. My father is the almighty, and when I die I’m going to sit by him and play chess forever.” The old man had himself tailed off into a long and dreamy thought. Stephanie also stepped back into her thoughts before saying…

“Scruffy. Are you alright?”

“Of course. Let’s get you home shall we?” Scruffy began to hobble away. But Stephanie stayed behind for a second. She didn’t know where the thought had come from but it was just there. What would her parents say? She would be taunted forever by her elder brother and sister! That couldn’t happen! And she would lose everything at school; she couldn’t be that lonely ever again! She wouldn’t let that happen. So she walked towards Scruffy and held his hand before suddenly letting out a huge scream. Scruffy looked puzzled and scared at the same time. Stephanie had begun to run towards the police station. Scruffy too had picked up a bit of pace. Stephanie quickly ran into the main entrance of the station, she was screaming and she was crying. The officers didn’t know what to do. Soon Scruffy came through the doors.

“Stephanie what are you doing?” He asked her.

“Get away from me you monster!” Stephanie yelled. She had turned on the waterworks and the officers surrounded them both.

Scruffy looked around in horror and terror, he was innocent.

But the next thing that Stephanie yelled shook him to the core…

“Help! Get that monster away from me! He was trying to sell me to men!!!” She ran towards an officer and continued to cry.
